1 W hen Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

Y aconteció que cuando Samuel era ya viejo, puso a sus hijos como jueces sobre Israel.

2 N ow the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.

El nombre de su primogénito era Joel, y el nombre del segundo, Abías; éstos juzgaban en Beerseba.

3 H is sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

Pero sus hijos no anduvieron por los caminos de él, sino que se desviaron tras ganancias deshonestas, aceptaron sobornos y pervirtieron el derecho.

4 T hen all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel to Ramah.

Entonces se reunieron todos los ancianos de Israel y fueron a Samuel en Ramá,

5 T hey said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

y le dijeron: Mira, has envejecido y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos. Ahora pues, danos un rey para que nos juzgue, como todas las naciones.

6 B ut the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

Pero fue desagradable a los ojos de Samuel que dijeran: Danos un rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró al Señor.

7 Y ahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: Escucha la voz del pueblo en cuanto a todo lo que te digan, pues no te han desechado a ti, sino que me han desechado a mí para que no sea rey sobre ellos.

8 A ccording to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so they also do to you.

Así como todas las obras que han hecho desde el día en que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, abandonándome y sirviendo a otros dioses, así lo están haciendo contigo también.

9 N ow therefore listen to their voice. However you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who will reign over them.”

Ahora pues, oye su voz. Sin embargo, les advertirás solemnemente y les harás saber el proceder del rey que reinará sobre ellos.

10 S amuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

Entonces Samuel habló todas las palabras del Señor al pueblo que le había pedido rey.

11 H e said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

Y dijo: Así será el proceder del rey que reinará sobre vosotros: tomará a vuestros hijos, los pondrá a su servicio en sus carros y entre su gente de a caballo, y correrán delante de sus carros.

12 H e will appoint them to him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.

Nombrará para su servicio comandantes de mil y de cincuenta, y a otros para labrar sus campos y recoger sus cosechas, y hacer sus armas de guerra y pertrechos para sus carros.

13 H e will take your daughters to be perfumers, to be cooks, and to be bakers.

Tomará también a vuestras hijas para perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas.

14 H e will take your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, even their best, and give them to his servants.

Tomará lo mejor de vuestros campos, de vuestros viñedos y de vuestros olivares y los dará a sus siervos.

15 H e will take one tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give it to his officers, and to his servants.

De vuestro grano y de vuestras viñas tomará el diezmo, para dar lo a sus oficiales y a sus siervos.

16 H e will take your male servants, your female servants, your best young men, and your donkeys, and assign them to his own work.

Tomará también vuestros siervos y vuestras siervas, vuestros mejores jóvenes y vuestros asnos, y los usará para su servicio.

17 H e will take one tenth of your flocks; and you will be his servants.

De vuestros rebaños tomará el diezmo, y vosotros mismos vendréis a ser sus siervos.

18 Y ou will cry out in that day because of your king whom you will have chosen for yourselves; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.”

Ese día clamaréis por causa de vuestro rey a quien escogisteis para vosotros, pero el Señor no os responderá en ese día.

19 B ut the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No; but we will have a king over us,

No obstante, el pueblo rehusó oír la voz de Samuel, y dijeron: No, sino que habrá rey sobre nosotros,

20 t hat we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.”

a fin de que seamos como todas las naciones, para que nuestro rey nos juzgue, salga delante de nosotros y dirija nuestras batallas.

21 S amuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh.

Después que Samuel escuchó todas las palabras del pueblo, las repitió a oídos del Señor.

22 Y ahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”

Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: Oye su voz y nómbrales un rey. Entonces Samuel dijo a los hombres de Israel: Váyase cada uno a su ciudad.
