1 E ntonces respondió Job, y dijo:

Then Job answered and said,

2 E n verdad que sois el pueblo, y con vosotros morirá la sabiduría.

No doubt but ye are the people, And wisdom shall die with you.

3 P ero yo también tengo inteligencia como vosotros, no soy inferior a vosotros. ¿Y quién no sabe esto ?

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: Yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

4 S oy motivo de burla para mis amigos, el que clamaba a Dios, y El le respondía. Motivo de burla es el justo e intachable.

I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor, I who called upon God, and he answered: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

5 E l que está en holgura desprecia la calamidad, como cosa preparada para aquellos cuyos pies resbalan.

In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; It is ready for them whose foot slippeth.

6 L as tiendas de los destructores prosperan, y los que provocan a Dios están seguros, a quienes Dios ha dado el poder que tienen.

The tents of robbers prosper, And they that provoke God are secure; Into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

7 Y ahora pregunta a las bestias, y que ellas te instruyan, y a las aves de los cielos, y que ellas te informen.

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee:

8 O habla a la tierra y que ella te instruya, y que los peces del mar te lo declaren.

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

9 ¿ Quién entre todos ellos no sabe que la mano del Señor ha hecho esto,

Who knoweth not in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,

10 q ue en su mano está la vida de todo ser viviente, y el aliento de toda carne de hombre ?

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?

11 ¿ No distingue el oído las palabras como el paladar prueba la comida ?

Doth not the ear try words, Even as the palate tasteth its food?

12 E n los ancianos está la sabiduría, y en largura de días el entendimiento.

With aged men is wisdom, And in length of days understanding.

13 E n El están la sabiduría y el poder, y el consejo y el entendimiento son suyos.

With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

14 H e aquí, El derriba, y no se puede reedificar; aprisiona a un hombre, y no hay liberación.

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

15 H e aquí, El retiene las aguas, y todo se seca, y las envía e inundan la tierra.

Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; Again, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

16 E n El están la fuerza y la prudencia, suyos son el engañado y el engañador.

With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 E l hace que los consejeros anden descalzos, y hace necios a los jueces.

He leadeth counsellors away stripped, And judges maketh he fools.

18 R ompe las cadenas de los reyes y ata sus cinturas con cuerda.

He looseth the bond of kings, And he bindeth their loins with a girdle.

19 H ace que los sacerdotes anden descalzos y derriba a los que están seguros.

He leadeth priests away stripped, And overthroweth the mighty.

20 P riva del habla a los hombres de confianza y quita a los ancianos el discernimiento.

He removeth the speech of the trusty, And taketh away the understanding of the elders.

21 V ierte desprecio sobre los nobles y afloja el cinto de los fuertes.

He poureth contempt upon princes, And looseth the belt of the strong.

22 E l revela los misterios de las tinieblas y saca a la luz la densa oscuridad.

He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, And bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

23 E ngrandece las naciones, y las destruye; ensancha las naciones, y las dispersa.

He increaseth the nations, and he destroyeth them: He enlargeth the nations, and he leadeth them captive.

24 P riva de inteligencia a los jefes de la gente de la tierra y los hace vagar por un yermo sin camino;

He taketh away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, And causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25 a ndan a tientas en tinieblas, sin luz, y los hace tambalearse como ebrios.

They grope in the dark without light; And he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
