1 D igo, pues: Mientras el heredero es menor de edad, en nada es diferente del siervo, aunque sea el dueño de todo,

But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

2 s ino que está bajo guardianes y tutores hasta la edad señalada por el padre.

but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

3 A sí también nosotros, mientras éramos niños, estábamos sujetos a servidumbre bajo las cosas elementales del mundo.

So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

4 P ero cuando vino la plenitud del tiempo, Dios envió a su Hijo, nacido de mujer, nacido bajo la ley,

but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

5 a fin de que redimiera a los que estaban bajo la ley, para que recibiéramos la adopción de hijos.

that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 Y porque sois hijos, Dios ha enviado el Espíritu de su Hijo a nuestros corazones, clamando: ¡Abba! ¡Padre!

And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 P or tanto, ya no eres siervo, sino hijo; y si hijo, también heredero por medio de Dios. No os volváis a la esclavitud

So that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

8 P ero en aquel tiempo, cuando no conocíais a Dios, erais siervos de aquellos que por naturaleza no son dioses.

Howbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

9 P ero ahora que conocéis a Dios, o más bien, que sois conocidos por Dios, ¿cómo es que os volvéis otra vez a las cosas débiles, inútiles y elementales, a las cuales deseáis volver a estar esclavizados de nuevo?

but now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage over again?

10 O bserváis los días, los meses, las estaciones y los años.

Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.

11 T emo por vosotros, que quizá en vano he trabajado por vosotros.

I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain.

12 O s ruego, hermanos, haceos como yo, pues yo también me he hecho como vosotros. Ningún agravio me habéis hecho;

I beseech you, brethren, become as I am, for I also am become as ye are. Ye did me no wrong:

13 p ero sabéis que fue por causa de una enfermedad física que os anuncié el evangelio la primera vez;

but ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you the first time:

14 y lo que para vosotros fue una prueba en mi condición física, que no despreciasteis ni rechazasteis, sino que me recibisteis como un ángel de Dios, como a Cristo Jesús mismo.

and that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15 ¿ Dónde está, pues, aquel sentido de bendición que tuvisteis ? Pues testigo soy en favor vuestro de que de ser posible, os hubierais sacado los ojos y me los hubierais dado.

Where then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

16 ¿ Me he vuelto, por tanto, vuestro enemigo al deciros la verdad ?

So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?

17 E llos os tienen celo, no con buena intención, sino que quieren excluiros a fin de que mostréis celo por ellos.

They zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them.

18 E s bueno mostrar celo con buena intención siempre, y no sólo cuando yo estoy presente con vosotros.

But it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you.

19 H ijos míos, por quienes de nuevo sufro dolores de parto hasta que Cristo sea formado en vosotros,

My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you--

20 q uisiera estar presente con vosotros ahora y cambiar mi tono, pues perplejo estoy en cuanto a vosotros. Alegoría de la libertad en Cristo

but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.

21 D ecidme, los que deseáis estar bajo la ley, ¿no oís a la ley ?

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22 P orque está escrito que Abraham tuvo dos hijos, uno de la sierva y otro de la libre.

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

23 P ero el hijo de la sierva nació según la carne, y el hijo de la libre por medio de la promesa.

Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

24 E sto contiene una alegoría, pues estas mujeres son dos pactos; uno procede del monte Sinaí que engendra hijos para ser esclavos; éste es Agar.

Which things contain an allegory: for these women are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

25 A hora bien, Agar es el monte Sinaí en Arabia, y corresponde a la Jerusalén actual, porque ella está en esclavitud con sus hijos.

Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

26 P ero la Jerusalén de arriba es libre; ésta es nuestra madre.

But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

27 P orque escrito está: Regocijate, oh esteril, la que no concibes; prorrumpe y clama, tu que no tienes dolores de parto, porque mas son los hijos de la desolada, que de la que tiene marido.

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

28 Y vosotros, hermanos, como Isaac, sois hijos de la promesa.

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

29 P ero así como entonces el que nació según la carne persiguió al que nació según el Espíritu, así también sucede ahora.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, so also it is now.

30 P ero, ¿qué dice la Escritura? Echa fuera a la sierva y a su hijo, pues el hijo de la sierva no sera heredero con el hijo de la libre.

Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

31 A sí que, hermanos, no somos hijos de la sierva, sino de la libre.

Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.
