1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

Then Job answered and said,

2 « Senza dubbio voi siete gente saggia, e la sapienza morirà con voi.

No doubt but ye are the people, And wisdom shall die with you.

3 M a ho anch'io intendimento come voi, e non sono da meno di voi; inoltre chi ignora cose come queste?

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: Yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

4 S ono diventato lo zimbello dei miei amici; io, a cui Dio rispondeva, quando lo invocavo; il giusto, l'integro è messo in ridicolo.

I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor, I who called upon God, and he answered: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

5 U na lampada, disprezzata nei pensieri di quelli che vivono negli agi, è preparata per coloro i cui piedi vacillano.

In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; It is ready for them whose foot slippeth.

6 S ono invece tranquille le tende dei ladroni, e sono al sicuro quelli che provocano Dio e quelli che fanno della propria forza un dio.

The tents of robbers prosper, And they that provoke God are secure; Into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

7 M a interroga ora le bestie e ti istruiranno, gli uccelli del cielo e te lo diranno.

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee:

8 o parla alla terra, ed essa ti istruirà, e i pesci del mare te lo racconteranno.

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

9 F ra tutte queste creature chi non sa che la mano dell'Eterno ha fatto questo?

Who knoweth not in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,

10 E gli ha nelle sue mani la vita di ogni cosa vivente e lo spirito di ogni essere umano.

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?

11 L 'orecchio non esamina forse le parole, come il palato assapora i cibi?

Doth not the ear try words, Even as the palate tasteth its food?

12 N ei vecchi si trova la sapienza, e lunghezza di giorni conferisce intendimento.

With aged men is wisdom, And in length of days understanding.

13 M a in lui risiedono la sapienza e la forza, a lui appartengono il consiglio e l'intendimento.

With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

14 E cco, se egli distrugge, nessuno può ricostruire; se imprigiona qualcuno, nessuno gli può aprire.

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

15 S e trattiene le acque, tutto inaridisce; se le lascia andare, sconvolgono la terra.

Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; Again, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

16 E gli possiede forza e sapienza; da lui dipendono chi è ingannato e chi inganna.

With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 E gli fa camminare scalzi i consiglieri, rende stolti i giudici.

He leadeth counsellors away stripped, And judges maketh he fools.

18 S cioglie i legami imposti dai re e cinge i loro lombi, con una cintura.

He looseth the bond of kings, And he bindeth their loins with a girdle.

19 F a camminare scalzi i sacerdoti e rovescia i potenti.

He leadeth priests away stripped, And overthroweth the mighty.

20 T oglie la parola a quelli in cui si pone fiducia e priva di intendimento i vecchi.

He removeth the speech of the trusty, And taketh away the understanding of the elders.

21 V ersa il disprezzo sui nobili, e allenta la cintura ai forti.

He poureth contempt upon princes, And looseth the belt of the strong.

22 P alesa le cose profonde nascoste nelle tenebre, e porta alla luce l'ombra di morte.

He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, And bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

23 R ende grandi le nazioni e poi le distrugge, estende le nazioni e poi le porta in esilio.

He increaseth the nations, and he destroyeth them: He enlargeth the nations, and he leadeth them captive.

24 T oglie il senno ai capi della terra e li fa vagare in solitudini senza strade.

He taketh away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, And causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25 B rancolano nelle tenebre senza luce, e li fa barcollare come ubriachi».

They grope in the dark without light; And he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
