1 N ow the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

Los Filisteos reunieron sus ejércitos para la guerra, y se concentraron en Soco, que pertenece a Judá; y acamparon entre Soco y Azeca, en Efes Damim.

2 S aul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

Y Saúl y los hombres de Israel se reunieron y acamparon en el Valle de Ela, y se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a los Filisteos.

3 T he Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

Los Filisteos estaban a un lado del monte, e Israel estaba al otro lado del monte, y entre ellos, el valle.

4 A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span went out.

Entonces de los ejércitos de los Filisteos salió un campeón llamado Goliat, de Gat, cuya estatura era de casi tres metros (6 codos y un palmo).

5 H e had a helmet of brass on his head, and he wore a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

Tenía un casco de bronce sobre la cabeza y llevaba puesta una cota de malla, y el peso de la cota era de 5, 000 siclos (57 kilos) de bronce.

6 H e had brass shin armor on his legs, and a brass javelin between his shoulders.

7 T he staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. His shield bearer went before him.

8 H e stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

Goliat se paró y gritó a las filas de Israel: “¿Para qué han salido a ponerse en orden de batalla? ¿Acaso no soy yo Filisteo y ustedes siervos de Saúl ? Escojan un hombre y que venga contra mí.

9 I f he is able to fight with me and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us.”

Si es capaz de pelear conmigo y matarme, entonces seremos sus siervos; pero si yo lo venzo y lo mato, entonces ustedes serán nuestros siervos y nos servirán.”

10 T he Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel today! Give me a man, that we may fight together!”

De nuevo el Filisteo dijo: “Hoy desafío a las filas de Israel. Denme un hombre para que luchemos mano a mano.”

11 W hen Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

Cuando Saúl y todo Israel oyeron estas palabras del Filisteo, se acobardaron y tuvieron gran temor.

12 N ow David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.

David era hijo del Efrateo de Belén (Casa del Pan) de Judá, llamado Isaí, y éste tenía ocho hijos. En los días de Saúl, Isaí ya era viejo, avanzado en años entre los hombres.

13 T he three oldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

Los tres hijos mayores de Isaí habían ido con Saúl a la guerra. Los nombres de los tres hijos que fueron a la guerra eran: Eliab, el primogénito, Abinadab, el segundo, y Sama, el tercero.

14 D avid was the youngest; and the three oldest followed Saul.

David era el menor. Los tres mayores siguieron, pues, a Saúl,

15 N ow David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

pero David iba y venía de donde estaba Saúl a Belén para apacentar el rebaño de su padre.

16 T he Philistine came near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

Durante cuarenta días el Filisteo vino mañana y tarde, presentándose en desafío.

17 J esse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;

Y dijo Isaí a su hijo David: “Lleva ahora a tus hermanos un efa (22 litros) de grano tostado y estos diez panes, y corre al campamento a donde están tus hermanos.

18 a nd bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.”

Lleva también estos diez quesos al capitán de los mil, y mira a ver cómo están tus hermanos y trae noticias de ellos.

19 N ow Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Porque Saúl y tus hermanos y todos los hombres de Israel están en el Valle de Ela, peleando contra los Filisteos.”

20 D avid rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took and went, as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the place of the wagons, as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle.

Y se levantó David muy de mañana, dejó el rebaño con un guarda, y tomando las provisiones, se fue como Isaí le había mandado. Llegó al perímetro del campamento cuando el ejército salía en orden de batalla, lanzando el grito de guerra.

21 I srael and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

E Israel y los Filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla, ejército contra ejército.

22 D avid left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

Entonces David dejó su carga al cuidado del que guardaba el equipaje y corrió a la línea de combate y entró a saludar a sus hermanos.

23 A s he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and said the same words; and David heard them.

Mientras hablaba con ellos, el campeón, el Filisteo de Gat llamado Goliat, subió de entre las filas de los Filisteos y habló las mismas palabras de su desafío, y David las oyó.

24 A ll the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were terrified.

Cuando todos los hombres de Israel vieron a Goliat, huyeron de él, y tenían gran temor.

25 T he men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. The king will give great riches to the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.”

Y los hombres de Israel decían: “¿Han visto a ese hombre que sube? Ciertamente sube para desafiar a Israel. El rey colmará con grandes riquezas al que lo mate, le dará su hija y hará libre en Israel a la casa de su padre.”

26 D avid spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

Entonces David preguntó a los que estaban junto a él: “¿Qué harán por el hombre que mate a este Filisteo y quite el oprobio de Israel ? ¿Quién es este Filisteo incircunciso para desafiar a los escuadrones del Dios viviente ?”

27 T he people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”

Y el pueblo le respondió según aquella palabra: “Así se hará al hombre que lo mate.”

28 E liab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.”

Eliab, su hermano mayor, oyó cuando él hablaba con los hombres; y se encendió la ira de Eliab contra David, y le dijo: “¿Para qué has descendido acá ? ¿Con quién has dejado aquellas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Yo conozco tu soberbia y la maldad de tu corazón, que has descendido para ver la batalla.”

29 D avid said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”

Pero David respondió: “¿Qué he hecho yo ahora? ¿No fue sólo una pregunta ?”

30 H e turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.

Entonces se apartó de su lado hacia otro y preguntó lo mismo; y el pueblo respondió lo mismo que antes. David Acepta el Reto

31 W hen the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.

Cuando se supieron las palabras que David había hablado, se lo dijeron a Saúl, y él lo hizo venir.

32 D avid said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

Y dijo David a Saúl: “No se desaliente el corazón de nadie a causa de él; su siervo irá y peleará con este Filisteo.”

33 S aul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”

Entonces Saúl dijo a David: “Tú no puedes ir contra este Filisteo a pelear con él, porque tú eres un muchacho y él ha sido un guerrero desde su juventud.”

34 D avid said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb out of the flock,

Pero David respondió a Saúl: “Su siervo apacentaba las ovejas de su padre, y cuando un león o un oso venía y se llevaba un cordero del rebaño,

35 I went out after him, and struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and struck him, and killed him.

yo salía tras él, lo atacaba, y lo rescataba de su boca; y cuando se levantaba contra mí, lo tomaba por la quijada, lo hería y lo mataba.

36 Y our servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”

Su siervo ha matado tanto al león como al oso; y este Filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha desafiado a los escuadrones del Dios viviente.”

37 D avid said, “Yahweh who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go! Yahweh will be with you.”

Y David añadió: “El Señor, que me ha librado de las garras del león y de las garras del oso, me librará de la mano de este Filisteo.” Y Saúl dijo a David: “Ve, y que el Señor sea contigo.”

38 S aul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of brass on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.

Saúl vistió a David con sus ropas militares, le puso un casco de bronce en la cabeza y lo cubrió con una armadura.

39 D avid strapped his sword on his clothing, and he tried to move; for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these; for I have not tested them.” Then David took them off.

David se ciñó la espada sobre sus ropas militares y trató de caminar, pues no se las había probado antes. Entonces David dijo a Saúl: “No puedo caminar con esto, pues no tengo experiencia con ellas.” David se las quitó,

40 H e took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine.

y tomando su cayado en la mano, escogió del arroyo cinco piedras lisas y las puso en el saco de pastor que traía, en el zurrón, y con la honda en la mano se acercó al Filisteo. Victoria de David y del Pueblo

41 T he Philistine walked and came near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him.

El Filisteo vino, y se fue acercando a David, con su escudero delante de él.

42 W hen the Philistine looked around, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and had a good looking face.

Cuando el Filisteo miró y vio a David, lo tuvo en poco porque era un muchacho, rubio y bien parecido.

43 T he Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods.

Y el Filisteo dijo a David: “¿Acaso soy un perro, que vienes contra mí con palos ?” Y el Filisteo maldijo a David por sus dioses.

44 T he Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky, and to the animals of the field.”

También dijo el Filisteo a David: “Ven a mí, y daré tu carne a las aves del cielo y a las fieras del campo.”

45 T hen David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Entonces dijo David al Filisteo: “Tú vienes a mí con espada, lanza y jabalina, pero yo vengo a ti en el nombre del Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel, a quien tú has desafiado.

46 T oday, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you, and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky, and to the wild animals of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,

El Señor te entregará hoy en mis manos, y yo te derribaré y te cortaré la cabeza. Y daré hoy los cadáveres del ejército de los Filisteos a las aves del cielo y a las fieras de la tierra, para que toda la tierra sepa que hay Dios en Israel,

47 a nd that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is Yahweh’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

y para que toda esta asamblea sepa que el Señor no libra ni con espada ni con lanza; porque la batalla es del Señor y El los entregará a ustedes en nuestras manos.”

48 W hen the Philistine arose, and walked and came near to meet David, David hurried, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

Sucedió que cuando el Filisteo se levantó y se fue acercando para enfrentarse a David, éste corrió rápidamente hacia el frente de batalla para enfrentarse al Filisteo.

49 D avid put his hand in his bag, took a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.

David metió la mano en su saco, sacó de él una piedra, la lanzó con la honda, e hirió al Filisteo en la frente. La piedra se hundió en su frente y Goliat cayó a tierra sobre su rostro.

50 S o David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

Así venció David al Filisteo con una honda y una piedra, e hirió al Filisteo y lo mató; pero no había espada en la mano de David.

51 T hen David ran, stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

Entonces David corrió y se puso sobre el Filisteo, tomó su espada, la sacó de la vaina y lo mató, cortándole la cabeza con ella. Cuando los Filisteos vieron que su campeón estaba muerto, huyeron.

52 T he men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gai and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron.

Y levantándose los hombres de Israel y de Judá, gritaron y persiguieron a los Filisteos hasta el valle y hasta las Puertas de Ecrón. Los Filisteos muertos estaban tendidos a lo largo del camino a Saaraim, aun hasta Gat y Ecrón.

53 T he children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines and they plundered their camp.

Los Israelitas regresaron de perseguir a los Filisteos y saquearon sus campamentos.

54 D avid took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent.

Entonces David tomó la cabeza del Filisteo y la llevó a Jerusalén (Ciudad de Paz), pero puso sus armas en su tienda.

55 W hen Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”

Cuando Saúl vio a David salir contra el Filisteo, dijo a Abner, el comandante del ejército: “Abner, ¿de quién es hijo este joven ?” Y Abner dijo: “Por su vida, oh rey, no sé.”

56 T he king said, “Inquire whose son the young man is!”

Y el rey dijo: “Pregunta de quién es hijo el joven.”

57 A s David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Cuando regresó David de matar al Filisteo, Abner lo tomó y lo llevó ante Saúl, con la cabeza del Filisteo en su mano.

58 S aul said to him, “Whose son are you, you young man?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

Y Saúl le dijo: “Joven, ¿de quién eres hijo?” Y David respondió: “ Yo soy hijo de su siervo Isaí el de Belén.”
