1 P roverbios de Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel.

The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

2 P ara entender sabiduría y doctrina, y conocer razones prudentes.

to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;

3 P ara recibir prudentes consejos, y justicia, juicio y equidad.

to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;

4 P ara dar sagacidad a los incautos, e inteligencia y cordura a los jóvenes.

to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man:

5 Q ue lo oiga el sabio, y aumente su saber, y que el entendido reciba consejo

that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:

6 p ara entender proverbios y enigmas, y palabras sabias y profundas.

to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.

7 E l principio de la sabiduría es el temor al Señor; Los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la enseñanza. Amonestaciones de la Sabiduría

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

8 A tiende, hijo mío, las correcciones de tu padre, y no menosprecies las enseñanzas de tu madre;

My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching:

9 A dorno de gracia serán sobre tu cabeza, y collares alrededor de tu cuello.

for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

10 H ijo mío, si los pecadores quisieran engañarte, no te dejes llevar por ellos.

My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

11 T al vez te digan: «¡Ven con nosotros! Estemos al acecho para derramar sangre. Acechemos sin motivo a los incautos.

If they say, “Come with us, Let’s lay in wait for blood; let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

12 S eamos como el sepulcro, como el abismo, y traguémonos viva y entera a la gente.

let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

13 H allaremos toda clase de riquezas y llenaremos con despojos nuestras casas.

We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.

14 C omparte tu destino con nosotros, y compartiremos todos una misma bolsa.»

You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.”

15 P ero, hijo mío, no vayas por su camino; ¡aleja tus pasos de sus veredas!

My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,

16 S us pies corren hacia el mal, ¡se apresuran a derramar sangre!

for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

17 N o tiene caso tender una trampa a la vista de todas las aves;

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird:

18 p ero ellos atentan contra su propia vida; ¡ellos mismos se tienden la trampa!

but these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.

19 A sí son las sendas de la gente ambiciosa: ¡su propia ambición les quita la vida!

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

20 L a sabiduría clama en las calles, y deja oír su voz por las plazas.

Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.

21 C lama en los principales puntos de encuentro; a la entrada de la ciudad expone sus razones:

She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:

22 « Ustedes, muchachos inexpertos y burlones, ¿hasta cuándo seguirán amando la simpleza? ¿Hasta cuándo seguirán burlándose de todo? ¿Hasta cuando aborrecerán el conocimiento?

“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

23 ¡ Presten atención a mis reprensiones! Yo derramaré mi espíritu sobre ustedes, y les daré a conocer mis argumentos.

Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

24 » Pero yo los llamé, y nadie quiso oírme; les tendí la mano, y nadie me hizo caso;

Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;

25 A l contrario, desecharon todos mis consejos y no quisieron recibir mi reprensión.

but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;

26 P or eso, yo me burlaré de ustedes cuando les sobrevenga la temida calamidad,

I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;

27 c uando la calamidad que tanto temen les sobrevenga como un torbellino; ¡cuando les sobrevengan tribulaciones y angustias.

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.

28 E ntonces me llamarán, y no les responderé; me buscarán de mañana, y no me hallarán.

Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;

29 P uesto que aborrecen la sabiduría, y no optaron por temer al Señor

because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

30 n i quisieron seguir mis consejos, sino que menospreciaron todas mis reprensiones,

They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

31 c omerán los frutos de sus andanzas y se hartarán con sus propios consejos.

Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

32 L os incautos mueren por sus propios desvíos; a los necios los destruye su autosuficiencia.

For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.

33 P ero los que me oyen vivirán tranquilos, sin sobresaltos ni temor de ningún mal.»

But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
