1 B eber vino o bebidas embriagantes te lleva a blasfemar y a causar alborotos. No es de sabios errar por su culpa.

Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

2 E l enojo del rey es como el rugido de un león; enfurecerlo es atentar contra uno mismo.

The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.

3 A l hombre le adorna alejarse de pleitos, pero los insensatos se enredan en ellos.

It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; but every fool will be quarreling.

4 L lega el invierno y el perezoso no siembra; cuando llega el verano, no halla comida.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

5 P ara la mente humana, los consejos son tan profundos como el océano; alcanzables sólo para quien es entendido.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 S on muchos los que dicen ser bondadosos, pero ¿dónde están los hombres sinceros?

Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man?

7 E l hombre justo no se aparta de su integridad; ¡dichosos sus hijos, que siguen sus pasos!

A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him.

8 C uando el rey ocupa el tribunal de justicia, le basta una mirada para despejar todo mal.

A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

9 N o hay nadie que pueda afirmar que su corazón está limpio de pecado.

Who can say, “I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin?”

10 L as pesas y las medidas falsas son cosas que al Señor le repugnan.

Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.

11 P or sus hechos, hasta un niño deja ver si su conducta es limpia y recta.

Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.

12 E l Señor nos dotó al mismo tiempo de oídos para oír y de ojos para ver.

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Yahweh has made even both of them.

13 N o seas dormilón, y jamás serás pobre; no pegues los ojos, y el pan nunca te faltará.

Don’t love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.

14 E l comprador dice que lo que compra es malo, pero en cuanto paga, alaba su compra.

“It’s no good, it’s no good,” says the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.

15 A bundan el oro y las piedras preciosas, pero los labios prudentes son una joya.

There is gold and abundance of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.

16 D espoja de su ropa, y reténla en prenda, al que salga fiador de algún extraño.

Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.

17 ¡ Qué sabroso sabe el pan de mentira, pero al final acabas con mal sabor de boca!

Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.

18 C on los consejos se ordenan los planes, y con buena estrategia se gana la guerra.

Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war!

19 E l que es chismoso revela el secreto; no te juntes con gente boquifloja.

He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.

20 L a muerte más sombría le aguarda al que maldice a su padre o a su madre.

Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

21 A l principio, se adquieren bienes de prisa; al final, eso no es ninguna bendición.

An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning, won’t be blessed in the end.

22 N unca digas: «¡Me voy a vengar!» Mejor deja que el Señor lo haga por ti.

Don’t say, “I will pay back evil.” Wait for Yahweh, and he will save you.

23 A l Señor le repugnan las pesas falsas; la balanza falsa no es nada buena.

Yahweh detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing.

24 S i el Señor dirige los pasos del hombre, ¿cómo puede el hombre entender su camino?

A man’s steps are from Yahweh; how then can man understand his way?

25 T ú solo te tiendes la trampa si a la ligera consagras algo a Dios y después de eso te pones a pensar.

It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows.

26 E l rey sabio avienta como trigo a los impíos, y luego pasa sobre ellos la rueda del molino.

A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them.

27 E l espíritu del hombre es la lámpara del Señor que escudriña los sentimientos más profundos.

The spirit of man is Yahweh’s lamp, searching all his innermost parts.

28 L a misericordia y la verdad cuidan del rey, y la clemencia sustenta su trono.

Love and faithfulness keep the king safe. His throne is sustained by love.

29 L os jóvenes se ufanan de su fuerza; los ancianos se enorgullecen de sus canas.

The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair.

30 L os azotes hieren pero curan la maldad; el castigo purifica lo más recóndito del ser.

Wounding blows cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the innermost parts.
