1 M ejor tener buena fama que mucha riqueza; la buena fama es mejor que la plata y el oro.

A good name is more desirable than great riches, and loving favor is better than silver and gold.

2 E l rico y el pobre coinciden en algo: a uno y otro los hizo el Señor.

The rich and the poor have this in common: Yahweh is the maker of them all.

3 E l que es astuto, ve el peligro y se esconde; el que es ingenuo, sigue adelante y es afectado.

A prudent man sees danger, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

4 E l Señor recompensa a los que le temen con riquezas, honra y vida, si son humildes.

The result of humility and the fear of Yahweh is wealth, honor, and life.

5 E l camino del perverso está lleno de trampas y espinas; quien se cuida a sí mismo, se cuida de seguirlo.

Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked: whoever guards his soul stays from them.

6 E nseña al niño a seguir fielmente su camino, y aunque llegue a anciano no se apartará de él.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 L os ricos son los amos de los pobres; los deudores son esclavos de los prestamistas.

The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender.

8 E l que siembra maldad, maldad cosechará; ¡el Señor destruirá su insolente violencia!

He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

9 B endito sea quien ve a otros con bondad y comparte su pan con el indigente!

He who has a generous eye will be blessed; for he shares his food with the poor.

10 E xpulsa al blasfemo, y se acabarán las peleas, cesarán los pleitos y las ofensas.

Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out; yes, quarrels and insults will stop.

11 E l rey ama y brinda su amistad al hombre de corazón puro y labios amables.

He who loves purity of heart and speaks gracefully is the king’s friend.

12 E l Señor es guardián del conocimiento, pero trastorna los planes de los traidores.

Yahweh’s eyes watch over knowledge; but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.

13 E l perezoso arguye: «¡Hay un león en la calle! Si salgo, ¡seré hombre muerto!»

The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!”

14 L os labios de la mujer ajena son un abismo, en donde cae el que provoca la ira del Señor.

The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit: he who is under Yahweh’s wrath will fall into it.

15 L a necedad va ligada al corazón del joven, pero la vara disciplinaria le quita lo necio.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child: the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

16 O primir al pobre para hacerse rico, o hacer al rico más rico, conduce a la pobreza. Treinta dichos egipcios

Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich, both come to poverty.

17 I nclina tu oído y escucha las palabras de los sabios; aplica tu corazón a mi sabiduría.

Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Apply your heart to my teaching.

18 E s una delicia, si la guardas dentro de ti y si la afirmas sobre tus labios.

For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.

19 H oy te la he dado a conocer para que pongas tu confianza en el Señor.

That your trust may be in Yahweh, I teach you today, even you.

20 ¿ Acaso no te he escrito treinta dichos para impartirte consejos y conocimientos?

Haven’t I written to you thirty excellent things of counsel and knowledge,

21 T e he dado a conocer palabras de verdad, para que las lleves a quienes te enviaron.

To teach you truth, reliable words, to give sound answers to the ones who sent you?

22 N o te aproveches del pobre porque es pobre, ni prives al afligido de un juicio justo,

Don’t exploit the poor, because he is poor; and don’t crush the needy in court;

23 p orque el Señor defenderá su causa y les quitará la vida a quienes les quiten todo.

for Yahweh will plead their case, and plunder the life of those who plunder them.

24 N o tengas nada que ver con gente violenta, ni te hagas amigo de gente agresiva,

Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man, and don’t associate with one who harbors anger:

25 p ara que no imites su conducta y tú mismo te tiendas una trampa.

lest you learn his ways, and ensnare your soul.

26 N o te comprometas por otros, ni salgas fiador de nadie.

Don’t you be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts.

27 ¿ Por qué han de quitarte hasta la cama si resulta que no tienes con qué pagar?

If you don’t have means to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?

28 N o traspases los linderos de antaño que tus antepasados establecieron.

Don’t move the ancient boundary stone, which your fathers have set up.

29 C uando veas alguien que hace bien su trabajo, no lo verás entre gente de baja condición sino que estará en presencia de reyes.

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.
