1 W hen thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider diligently him that is before thee;

2 A nd put a knife to thy throat, If thou be a man given to appetite.

Y pon cuchillo a tu garganta Si eres hombre de mucho apetito.

3 B e not desirous of his dainties; Seeing they are deceitful food.

No desees sus manjares, Porque es alimento engañoso.

4 W eary not thyself to be rich; Cease from thine own wisdom.

No te fatigues en adquirir riquezas, Deja de pensar en ellas.

5 W ilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings, Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

Cuando pones tus ojos en ella, ya no está. Porque la riqueza ciertamente se hace alas Como águila que vuela hacia los cielos.

6 E at thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, Neither desire thou his dainties:

No comas el pan del egoísta, Ni desees sus manjares;

7 F or as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

Pues como piensa dentro de sí, así es él. El te dice: “Come y bebe,” Pero su corazón no está contigo.

8 T he morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, And lose thy sweet words.

Vomitarás el bocado que has comido, Y malgastarás tus cumplidos.

9 S peak not in the hearing of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

No hables a oídos del necio, Porque despreciará la sabiduría de tus palabras.

10 R emove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

No muevas el lindero antiguo, Ni entres en la heredad de los huérfanos,

11 F or their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause against thee.

Porque su Redentor es fuerte; El defenderá su causa contra ti.

12 A pply thy heart unto instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción Y tus oídos a las palabras del conocimiento.

13 W ithhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

No escatimes la disciplina del niño; Aunque lo castigues con vara, no morirá.

14 T hou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

Lo castigarás con vara, Y librarás su alma del Seol.

15 M y son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:

Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, Mi corazón también se me alegrará;

16 Y ea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.

Y se regocijarán mis entrañas Cuando tus labios hablen lo que es recto.

17 L et not thy heart envy sinners; But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, Antes vive siempre en el temor del Señor.

18 F or surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.

Porque ciertamente hay un futuro, Y tu esperanza no será cortada.

19 H ear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.

Escucha, hijo mío, y sé sabio, Y dirige tu corazón por el buen camino.

20 B e not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

No estés con los bebedores de vino, Ni con los comilones de carne,

21 F or the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

Porque el borracho y el glotón se empobrecerán, Y la vagancia se vestirá de harapos.

22 H earken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.

Escucha a tu padre, que te engendró, Y no desprecies a tu madre cuando envejezca.

23 B uy the truth, and sell it not; Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Compra la verdad y no la vendas, Adquiere sabiduría, instrucción e inteligencia.

24 T he father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.

El padre del justo se regocijará en gran manera, Y el que engendra un sabio se alegrará en él.

25 L et thy father and thy mother be glad, And let her that bare thee rejoice.

Alégrense tu padre y tu madre, Y regocíjese la que te dio a luz.

26 M y son, give me thy heart; And let thine eyes delight in my ways.

Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, Y que tus ojos se deleiten en mis caminos.

27 F or a harlot is a deep ditch; And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.

Porque fosa profunda es la ramera Y pozo angosto es la mujer desconocida.

28 Y ea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.

Ciertamente ella acecha como ladrón, Y multiplica los infieles entre los hombres.

29 W ho hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

¿De quién son los ayes ? ¿De quién las tristezas? ¿De quién las luchas? ¿De quién las quejas? ¿De quién las heridas sin causa? ¿De quién los ojos enrojecidos?

30 T hey that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine.

De los que se demoran mucho con el vino, De los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.

31 L ook not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:

No mires al vino cuando rojea, Cuando resplandece en la copa; Entra suavemente,

32 A t the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.

Pero al final muerde como serpiente, Y pica como víbora.

33 T hine eyes shall behold strange things, And thy heart shall utter perverse things.

Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, Y tu corazón proferirá perversidades.

34 Y ea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

Y serás como el que se acuesta en medio del mar, O como el que se acuesta en lo alto de un mástil.

35 T hey have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not hurt; They have beaten me, and I felt it not: When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Y dirás: “Me hirieron, pero no me dolió; Me golpearon, pero no lo sentí. Cuando despierte, Volveré a buscar más.”
