1 N ow Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

Jefté el Galaadita era un guerrero valiente, hijo de una ramera. Galaad era el padre de Jefté.

2 A nd Gilead's wife bare him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.

Y la mujer de Galaad le dio hijos. Y cuando los hijos de su mujer crecieron, echaron fuera a Jefté, y le dijeron: “No tendrás heredad en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.”

3 T hen Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

Jefté huyó de sus hermanos y habitó en la tierra de Tob. Y hombres indignos se juntaron con Jefté y salían con él.

4 A nd it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Después de cierto tiempo sucedió que los Amonitas pelearon contra Israel.

5 A nd it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

Y cuando los Amonitas pelearon contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob.

6 a nd they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Y dijeron a Jefté: “Ven y sé nuestro jefe para que peleemos contra los Amonitas.”

7 A nd Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

Entonces Jefté contestó a los ancianos de Galaad: “¿No me odiaron y me echaron de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, han venido a mí ahora cuando están en apuros ?”

8 A nd the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “Por esta causa hemos vuelto a ti: para que vengas con nosotros y pelees contra los Amonitas y seas jefe sobre todos los habitantes de Galaad.”

9 A nd Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: “Si me hacen volver para pelear contra los Amonitas y el Señor me los entrega, ¿seré yo el jefe de ustedes?”

10 A nd the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “El Señor es testigo entre nosotros. Ciertamente haremos como has dicho.”

11 T hen Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

Entonces Jefté fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo hizo cabeza y jefe sobre ellos. Y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del Señor en Mizpa.

12 A nd Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

Y envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los Amonitas para que le dijeran: “¿Qué hay entre usted y yo, que ha venido a mí para pelear contra mi tierra?”

13 A nd the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

El rey de los Amonitas dijo a los mensajeros de Jefté: “Porque Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subieron de Egipto, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto devuélvela ahora en paz.”

14 A nd Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

Pero Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los Amonitas,

15 a nd he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

que le dijeron: “Así dice Jefté: ‘Israel no tomó la tierra de Moab, ni la tierra de los Amonitas.

16 b ut when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

Porque cuando subieron de Egipto, e Israel pasó por el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo y llegó a Cades,

17 t hen Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

entonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom diciéndole: “Permítanos, le rogamos, pasar por su tierra,” pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. También enviaron mensajeros al rey de Moab pero él no consintió, así que Israel permaneció en Cades.

18 T hen they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

Luego atravesaron el desierto y rodearon la tierra de Edom y de Moab, llegaron al lado oriental de la tierra de Moab y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón; pero no entraron en el territorio de Moab, porque el Arnón era la frontera de Moab.

19 A nd Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

Entonces Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los Amorreos, rey de Hesbón, y le dijo Israel: “Permítanos, le rogamos, pasar por su tierra a nuestro lugar.”

20 B ut Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Pero Sehón no confió en Israel para darle paso por su territorio. Reunió, pues, Sehón a todo su pueblo y acampó en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.

21 A nd Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

El Señor, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y los derrotaron, e Israel tomó posesión de toda la tierra de los Amorreos, los habitantes de esa región.

22 A nd they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

Y poseyeron todo el territorio de los Amorreos desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

23 S o now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

Puesto que el Señor, Dios de Israel, expulsó a los Amorreos de delante de su pueblo Israel, ¿va usted a poseerla?

24 W ilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

¿No posee usted lo que Quemos, su dios, le ha dado para poseer? De modo que todo el territorio que el Señor nuestro Dios ha desposeído delante de nosotros, lo poseeremos.

25 A nd now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

Ahora pues, ¿es usted mejor que Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab ? ¿Acaso luchó él con Israel, o acaso peleó contra ellos?

26 W hile Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

Mientras Israel habitaba en Hesbón y sus pueblos, y en Aroer y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están a orillas del Arnón por, 300 años, ¿por qué no las recuperó durante ese tiempo?

27 I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

Por tanto, yo no he pecado contra usted, pero usted me está haciendo mal al hacer guerra contra mí. Que el Señor, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los Israelitas y los Amonitas.’”

28 H owbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Pero el rey de los Amonitas no hizo caso al mensaje que Jefté le envió. Voto y Victoria de Jefté

29 T hen the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

El Espíritu del Señor vino sobre Jefté. Entonces Jefté pasó por Galaad y Manasés. Luego pasó por Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad fue adonde estaban los Amonitas.

30 A nd Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

Y Jefté hizo un voto al Señor, y dijo: “Si en verdad entregas en mis manos a los Amonitas,

31 t hen it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

sucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando yo vuelva en paz de los Amonitas, será del Señor, o lo ofreceré como holocausto.”

32 S o Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

Jefté cruzó adonde estaban los Amonitas para pelear contra ellos, y el Señor los entregó en su mano.

33 A nd he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Y los hirió con una gran matanza desde Aroer hasta la entrada de Minit, veinte ciudades, hasta Abel Keramim. Y los Amonitas fueron sometidos delante de los Israelitas.

34 A nd Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

Cuando Jefté llegó a su casa en Mizpa, su hija salió a recibirlo con panderos y con danzas. Ella era su única hija. Fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija.

35 A nd it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

Al verla, él rasgó sus ropas y dijo: “¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido y estás entre los que me afligen. Porque he dado mi palabra al Señor, y no me puedo retractar.”

36 A nd she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

Entonces ella le dijo: “Padre mío, has dado tu palabra al Señor. Haz conmigo conforme a lo que has dicho, ya que el Señor te ha vengado de tus enemigos, los Amonitas.”

37 A nd she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

Y ella dijo a su padre: “Que se haga esto por mí; déjame sola por dos meses, para que vaya yo a los montes y llore por mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.”

38 A nd he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

Y él dijo: “Ve,” y la dejó ir por dos meses; y ella se fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

39 A nd it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

Al cabo de los dos meses ella regresó a su padre, que cumplió con ella conforme al voto que había hecho; y ella no tuvo relaciones con ningún hombre. Y se hizo costumbre en Israel,

40 t hat the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

que de año en año las hijas de Israel fueran cuatro días en el año a conmemorar a la hija de Jefté el Galaadita.
