1 P or medio del profeta Jeremías el Señor dio este mensaje contra Babilonia, es decir, contra la tierra de los caldeos.

The word that Jehovah spake concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet.

2 « ¡Anúncienlo en las naciones! ¡Levanten las banderas y háganlo saber! ¡Ya es del dominio público, así que no lo disimulen! ¡Digan que Babilonia ha sido conquistada, que el dios Bel ha quedado confundido, y que Merodac está deshecho. Las imágenes de sus ídolos han sido destrozadas.

Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.

3 L a atacó una nación del norte, y dejó desolada su tierra. Ya no hay en ella gente ni animales. ¡Todos huyeron, todos se han ido!

For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and beast.

4 » Cuando llegue el momento, vendrán juntos los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá, y llorando irán en busca del Señor su Dios. —Palabra del Señor.

In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek Jehovah their God.

5 » Preguntarán por el camino de Sión, y hacia allá se dirigirán, y unos a otros se dirán: “Vengan, hagamos con el Señor un pacto eterno que jamás se olvide.”

They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come ye, and join yourselves to Jehovah in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten.

6 » Mi pueblo es un rebaño de ovejas perdidas. Sus pastores las hicieron perder el camino, y se descarriaron por los montes. Anduvieron de monte en monte, y se olvidaron de sus rediles.

My people have been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place.

7 T odos los que las hallaban, las devoraban; sus enemigos alegaban no cometer ningún pecado, porque antes ellas habían pecado contra el Señor, que es mansión de justicia y esperanza de sus padres.

All that found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Jehovah, the habitation of righteousness, even Jehovah, the hope of their fathers.

8 » ¡Huyan de Babilonia! ¡Salgan del país de los caldeos! ¡Sean como los machos cabríos, que van al frente del rebaño!

Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks.

9 P orque yo estoy incitando contra Babilonia a una alianza de poderosos pueblos del norte, y voy a hacer que la ataquen. Desde allá se prepararán para atacarla, y la conquistarán. Son arqueros diestros y valientes, y sus flechas siempre dan en el blanco.

For, lo, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; none shall return in vain.

10 C aldea será botín de guerra; todos los que la saqueen quedarán satisfechos. —Palabra del Señor.

And Chaldea shall be a prey: all that prey upon her shall be satisfied, saith Jehovah.

11 » Y es que ustedes, babilonios, se alegraron y regocijaron destruyendo a mi pueblo. Retozaron como novillas sobre la hierba, relincharon como caballos.

Because ye are glad, because ye rejoice, O ye that plunder my heritage, because ye are wanton as a heifer that treadeth out the grain, and neigh as strong horses;

12 P ero esa ciudad que los vio nacer quedará avergonzada y humillada, convertida en un desierto, en un árido páramo. ¡Será la menos importante de las naciones!»

your mother shall be utterly put to shame; she that bare you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the hindermost of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.

13 L a ira del Señor hará que se quede abandonada y sin que nadie la habite. Todos los que pasen por Babilonia quedarán asombrados y se burlarán de su desgracia.

Because of the wrath of Jehovah she shall not be inhabited, but she shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

14 U stedes todos, los que tensan el arco: ¡fórmense y rodeen a Babilonia! ¡Disparen sus flechas, y no las escatimen! Porque Babilonia pecó contra el Señor.

Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against Jehovah.

15 ¡ Rodéenla y lancen gritos contra ella! ¡Tomen venganza de ella, y hagan que se rinda! ¡Derriben sus torres, y echen abajo sus murallas! ¡Hagan con ella lo que ella hizo con otros! ¡Ésta es la venganza del Señor!

Shout against her round about: she hath submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of Jehovah: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.

16 ¡ Acaben en Babilonia con todos los que siembran y siegan! Cuando los extranjeros se enfrenten a la espada destructora, todos ellos volverán los ojos a su pueblo y saldrán huyendo a su país.

Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.

17 I srael es un rebaño descarriado, dispersado por los leones. Primero lo devoró el rey de Asiria, y después el rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia le trituró los huesos.

Israel is a hunted sheep; the lions have driven him away: first, the king of Assyria devoured him; and now at last Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.

18 P or lo tanto, así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel: «Voy a castigar al rey de Babilonia y a su país, como antes castigué al rey de Asiria.

Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.

19 Y haré que Israel vuelva a su lugar de residencia, para que se alimente en el Carmelo y en Basán; para que sacie su apetito en el monte de Efraín y en Galaad.

And I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.

20 C uando lleguen el día y el momento, se buscará acusar a Israel por su maldad, y a Judá por sus pecados, y no se hallará de qué acusarlos, porque yo perdonaré a los que haya dejado con vida. —Palabra del Señor.

In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.

21 » ¡Ataca a la tierra de Meratayin, y a los habitantes de Pecod! ¡Destrúyelos, persíguelos hasta matarlos! ¡Haz todo tal y como yo te lo he ordenado. —Palabra del Señor.

Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: slay and utterly destroy after them, saith Jehovah, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.

22 S e oye en la tierra estruendo de guerra y de gran destrucción.

A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.

23 ¡ Babilonia, que desmenuzaba a otros pueblos como un martillo, ahora ha sido totalmente desmenuzada! ¡Se ha convertido en motivo de horror para todas las naciones!

How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

24 E l Señor te tendió una trampa, Babilonia, y caíste en ella. Sin darte cuenta, quedaste atrapada, porque lo desafiaste.

I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against Jehovah.

25 A brió el Señor su arsenal, y en su furia sacó sus armas. Esto lo ha hecho el Señor, el Dios de los ejércitos, en la tierra de los caldeos.

Jehovah hath opened his armory, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, hath a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.

26 ¡ Vengan contra ella desde los confines de la tierra! ¡Abran sus graneros, y conviértanla en un montón de ruinas! ¡Destrúyanla, que no le quede nada!

Come against her from the utmost border; open her store-houses; cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly; let nothing of her be left.

27 ¡ Maten a todos sus novillos! ¡Llévenlos al matadero! ¡Ay de ellos, pues su día ha llegado! ¡Llegó la hora de su castigo!

Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.

28 P uede oírse a los que huyen en desbandada de la tierra de Babilonia, y dan en Sión las noticias de que el Señor nuestro Dios se está vengando por lo que antes hicieron en su templo.

The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his temple.

29 « ¡Junten alrededor de Babilonia a los arqueros! ¡Acampen contra ella y lancen sus flechas! ¡Que no escape nadie! ¡Denle su merecido! ¡Hagan con ella lo que ella hizo con otros! Porque ella se rebeló contra el Señor, contra el Santo de Israel.

Call together the archers against Babylon, all them that bend the bow; encamp against her round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her; for she hath been proud against Jehovah, against the Holy One of Israel.

30 P or eso sus jóvenes caerán muertos por las calles. Ese día, todos sus guerreros serán derrotados. —Palabra del Señor.

Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith Jehovah.

31 » Yo estoy contra ti, pueblo insolente. Ha llegado ya el día y la hora de tu castigo. —Palabra del Señor de los ejércitos.

Behold, I am against thee, O thou proud one, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts; for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.

32 » Y tú, pueblo insolente, tropezarás y rodarás por tierra, y no habrá quien te levante. Yo les prenderé fuego a tus ciudades, y quemaré todos sus alrededores.»

And the proud one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all that are round about him.

33 A sí ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: «Los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá fueron oprimidos al mismo tiempo; todos sus opresores los tomaron cautivos y no los quisieron soltar.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all that took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.

34 P ero yo soy su poderoso Redentor. Mi nombre es el Señor de los ejércitos. Yo seré su defensor, y daré reposo a su tierra, pero a los habitantes de Babilonia no los dejaré reposar.

Their Redeemer is strong; Jehovah of hosts is his name: he will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 » ¡Guerra contra los caldeos! ¡Guerra contra los habitantes de Babilonia! ¡Guerra contra sus príncipes y sus sabios! —Palabra del Señor.

A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith Jehovah, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.

36 » ¡Guerra contra los adivinos! ¡Que pierdan su sabiduría! ¡Guerra contra sus valientes! ¡Que pierdan el valor!

A sword is upon the boasters, and they shall become fools; a sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed.

37 ¡ Guerra contra sus caballos y sus carros, y contra toda la gente que en ella se encuentra! ¡Que se acobarden como mujeres! ¡Guerra contra sus tesoros! ¡Que sean saqueados!

A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed.

38 ¡ Que todos sus manantiales se sequen! Porque son un país idólatra, aturdido con tantas imágenes.

A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up; for it is a land of graven images, and they are mad over idols.

39 » Por lo tanto, Babilonia llegará a ser la guarida de las fieras salvajes y de los chacales; allí también se guarecerán los polluelos del avestruz, y nunca más volverá a poblarse, ni habrá jamás quien la habite.

Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.

40 S erá como cuando yo destruí a Sodoma y Gomorra, y a sus ciudades vecinas: nunca nadie volverá a habitarla. —Palabra del Señor.

As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.

41 V iene ya un pueblo del norte. Una gran nación y muchos reyes se levantan desde los confines de la tierra.

Behold, a people cometh from the north; and a great nation and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth.

42 S on crueles y desalmados. Manejan el arco y la lanza, montan caballos, y su voz resuena como el mar. Se preparan a atacarte, pobre Babilonia, como hombres de guerra que son.

They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, every one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.

43 C uando el rey de Babilonia supo la noticia, sus manos desfallecieron; le sobrevino la angustia, y le dieron dolores como de mujer parturienta.

The king of Babylon hath heard the tidings of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.

44 « Yo vendré contra la fortaleza amurallada, como un león que sale de los bosques del Jordán, y muy pronto los haré huir de la ciudad. Pondré al frente de ella a quien yo elija; porque ¿quién puede compararse a mí?; ¿quién puede ocupar mi lugar?; ¿qué pastor puede hacerme frente?

Behold, the enemy shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that can stand before me?

45 A sí que oigan lo que yo, el Señor, he determinado hacer contra Babilonia, y los planes que he trazado contra el país de los caldeos. Aun sus niños más pequeños serán llevados cautivos, y sus casas serán destruidas.

Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.

46 C uando Babilonia sea conquistada, sus gritos harán que tiemble la tierra; su clamor se oirá en todas las naciones.»

At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth trembleth, and the cry is heard among the nations.
