1 C uando el rey Ezequías oyó esto, se rasgó las vestiduras y se vistió de cilicio, y entró en el templo del Señor.

And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Jehovah.

2 L uego, envió vestidos de cilicio al mayordomo Eliaquín, al escriba Sebna y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, con el profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz,

And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 p ara que le dijeran: «Así ha dicho Ezequías: “Éste es un día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia, pues los hijos están a punto de nacer, y la parturienta ya no tiene fuerzas.

And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of contumely; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

4 T al vez el Señor tu Dios habrá oído todo lo que ha dicho el Rabsaces, a quien su señor, el rey de Asiria, ha enviado para blasfemar al Dios viviente y para ofenderlo con sus palabras, las cuales el Señor tu Dios habrá oído. Por lo tanto, eleva una oración por el remanente que aún queda.”»

It may be Jehovah thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Jehovah thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.

5 L os siervos del rey Ezequías fueron a hablar con Isaías,

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 y éste les respondió: «Vayan y digan al rey que así ha dicho el Señor: “No tengas temor por las palabras que has oído, con las que me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria.

And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith Jehovah, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Y o voy a poner un espíritu en él que lo hará oír rumores, y volverá a su tierra, y en su tierra haré que caiga a filo de espada.”»

Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear tidings, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 E l Rabsaces oyó decir que el rey de Asiria se había ido de Laquis, y cuando volvió adonde éste había estado lo halló combatiendo contra Libna.

So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

9 C omo también oyó decir que el rey Tiracá de Etiopía había salido a combatirlo, volvió y envió embajadores a que le dijeran a Ezequías:

And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee, he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,

10 « No te dejes engañar por el Dios en quien tú confías, y que dice que Jerusalén no será entregada en manos del rey de Asiria.

Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11 T ú ya debes saber lo que los reyes de Asiria han hecho con todas las naciones, y cómo las han destruido. ¿Acaso crees que tú podrás escapar?

Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?

12 ¿ Acaso los dioses de las naciones que mis padres destruyeron pudieron librarlas? Me refiero a Gozán, Jarán, Resef, y a la gente de Edén que estaba en Telasar.

Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?

13 ¿ Dónde están los reyes de Jamat, Arfad, y de las ciudades de Sefarvayin, Hena y Guivá?»

Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?

14 E zequías tomó las cartas de mano de los embajadores, y después de leerlas subió al templo del Señor y, extendiéndolas delante del Señor,

And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up unto the house of Jehovah, and spread it before Jehovah.

15 o ró en su presencia. Dijo: «Señor y Dios de Israel, que habitas entre los querubines, sólo tú eres el Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra. ¡Tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra!

And Hezekiah prayed before Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, that sittest above the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.

16 I nclina, Señor, tu oído, y escucha. Abre, Señor, tus ojos, y mira. Oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha mandado blasfemarte a ti, el Dios viviente.

Incline thine ear, O Jehovah, and hear; open thine eyes, O Jehovah, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, wherewith he hath sent him to defy the living God.

17 E s verdad, Señor, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido naciones y países,

Of a truth, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,

18 y que han lanzado al fuego a sus dioses; pero es que ellos no eran dioses, sino hechura humana de madera y de piedra. ¡Por eso los destruyeron!

and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

19 P ero ahora, Señor y Dios nuestro, ¡sálvanos de su poder! Yo te lo ruego, para que todos los reinos de la tierra sepan que sólo tú, Señor, eres Dios.»

Now therefore, O Jehovah our God, save thou us, I beseech thee, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou Jehovah art God alone.

20 E ntonces Isaías hijo de Amoz mandó a decir a Ezequías: «Así ha dicho el Señor, Dios de Israel: “He escuchado lo que me has pedido acerca de Senaquerib, el rey de Asiria.”

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard thee.

21 Y esto es lo que el Señor ha dicho acerca de él: “La virginal hija de Sión te menosprecia y te escarnece. Detrás de ti mueve su cabeza la hija de Jerusalén.”

This is the word that Jehovah hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

22 ¿ A quién has vituperado y blasfemado? ¿Contra quién has alzado la voz, y levantado en alto tus ojos? ¡Contra el Santo de Israel!

Whom hast thou defied and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

23 P or medio de tus mensajeros has vituperado al Señor, al decir: “Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las alturas de los montes y a lo más inaccesible del Líbano, para cortar sus altos cedros y sus mejores cipreses; me he alojado en sus lugares más remotos, en el bosque de sus más fértiles campos.

By thy messengers thou hast defied the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir-trees thereof; and I will enter into his farthest lodging-place, the forest of his fruitful field.

24 H e cavado pozos y bebido aguas ajenas; con las plantas de mis pies he dejado secos todos los ríos de Egipto.”

I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.

25 ¿ Nunca has oído decir que, hace ya mucho tiempo, yo lo hice, y que desde tiempos pasados lo tengo planeado? Ahora lo he realizado, y tú causarás mucha desolación, y reducirás las ciudades fortificadas a montones de escombros.

Hast thou not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be thine to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

26 S us habitantes, impotentes, se acobardaron y quedaron confundidos. ¡Parecían hierba del campo, verdes hortalizas, paja en los techos, seca antes de tiempo!

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it is grown up.

27 Y o te conozco muy bien; sé cuándo entras y cuándo sales, y también sé cuánto ruges contra mí.

But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against me.

28 Y porque me has desafiado, y porque me he enterado de tu arrogancia, voy a ponerte un gancho en la trompa y un freno en el hocico, y te haré volver por donde viniste.

Because of thy raging against me, and because thine arrogancy is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

29 » A ti, Ezequías, te doy esta señal: Este año, y el siguiente, comerán ustedes lo que crezca por sí mismo, pero el tercer año podrán sembrar y segar, y plantar viñas, y comerán lo que ellas produzcan.

And this shall be the sign unto thee: Ye shall eat this year that which groweth of itself, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

30 Y los sobrevivientes de Judá volverán a echar raíces y tendrán muchos hijos.

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

31 P orque en Jerusalén y en el monte de Sión quedará un remanente que se salvará. Esto lo haré yo, el Señor, por mi gran amor.

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion they that shall escape: the zeal of Jehovah shall perform this.

32 » Por tanto, así dice el Señor acerca del rey de Asiria: “No entrará en esta ciudad. No lanzará ninguna flecha contra ella, ni se enfrentará a ella con escudos, ni levantará contra ella terraplenes.

Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.

33 P or el mismo camino que vino, volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad. —Palabra del Señor.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city, saith Jehovah.

34 ” Por mí mismo, y por mi siervo David, yo ampararé a esta ciudad, y la salvaré.”»

For I will defend this city to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

35 Y sucedió que esa misma noche el ángel del Señor salió y mató a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres en el campamento de los asirios. Por la mañana, cuando se levantaron, se encontraron con que por todas partes había cadáveres.

And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

36 E ntonces el rey Senaquerib de Asiria se fue de regreso a Nínive, y nunca más volvió,

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

37 p ues un día, mientras él adoraba en el templo de Nisroc, su dios, sus hijos Adramelec y Sarezer lo hirieron a filo de espada, y luego huyeron al territorio de Ararat. En su lugar reinó su hijo Esarjadón.

And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.
