1 O igan la palabra que el Señor ha pronunciado contra ustedes, casa de Israel.

Hear ye the word which Jehovah speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

2 A sí ha dicho el Señor: «No sigan las enseñanzas de las naciones, ni tengan temor de las señales del cielo, aun cuando las naciones las teman.

thus saith Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them.

3 M antienen costumbres que no sirven para nada. Porque en el bosque cortan un árbol, y un artífice le da forma con un buril;

For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.

4 l uego lo adornan con oro y plata, y lo afirman con clavos y martillo para que no se mueva.

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

5 S e quedan erguidos como una palmera, pero no hablan; ¡y tienen que ser llevados, porque no pueden andar! No tengan temor de ellos, porque no tienen ningún poder, ni para hacer mal ni para hacer bien.»

They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.

6 ¡ Nada hay semejante a ti, Señor! ¡Grande eres tú, y grande tu fama y poder!

There is none like unto thee, O Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

7 ¿ Quién no te temerá, Rey de las naciones? Tú eres digno de ser reverenciado, porque no hay ningún sabio ni rey que pueda compararse a ti.

Who should not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like unto thee.

8 T odos ellos son tontos y engreídos; de sus dioses de madera sólo aprenden tonterías.

But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock.

9 D e Tarsis traen planchas de plata, y de Ufaz traen oro refinado; y luego los visten con telas purpúreas. Todo es obra de artífices y fundidores; todo es obra de manos expertas.

There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men.

10 P ero el Señor es el Dios verdadero; es el Dios de la vida, ¡el Rey eterno! Cuando se enoja, tiembla la tierra; ¡no hay nación que resista su furor!

But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide his indignation.

11 U stedes, díganles así: «¡Que desaparezcan de la tierra, de lo que está bajo los cielos, los dioses que no hicieron los cielos ni la tierra!»

Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.

12 C on su poder, el Señor hizo la tierra; con su saber, puso orden en el mundo; con su sabiduría, extendió los cielos.

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens:

13 H abla él y se juntan las aguas en los cielos y se levantan las nubes en los confines de la tierra. Con los relámpagos le abre paso a la lluvia, y deja que el viento salga de sus depósitos.

when he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.

14 L a gente carece de ciencia y de talento. Los fundidores se avergüenzan de los ídolos que funden, porque su obra es una mentira: carece de espíritu.

Every man is become brutish and is without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

15 E sos ídolos están vacíos; son una obra hueca. Cuando les llegue la hora del castigo, serán destruidos.

They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

16 P ero el Dios que es la porción de Jacob, y cuyo nombre es el Señor de los ejércitos, no es así; él es quien ha hecho todo, y el pueblo de Israel es su herencia. Asolamiento de Judá

The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.

17 T ú, que habitas en un lugar fortificado, recoge de la tierra tus mercaderías.

Gather up thy wares out of the land, O thou that abidest in the siege.

18 P orque así ha dicho el Señor: «Esta vez me verás arrojar con una honda a los habitantes del país. Voy a afligirlos, para que lo sientan.»

For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel it.

19 ¡ Ay de mí! ¡Estoy hecho pedazos! ¡Mi herida no va a sanar! Aunque tengo que admitir que este mal es mío, y tengo que sufrirlo.

Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it.

20 M i tienda de campaña está desmantelada; todas las cuerdas están rotas. Mis hijos me abandonaron, y ahora están muertos. ¡Ya no hay nadie que me ayude a levantar mi tienda, ni quien cuelgue mis cortinas!

My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are not: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

21 A los pastores les falta inteligencia; no buscan al Señor; por eso no prosperan y todo su ganado se ha esparcido.

For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Jehovah: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.

22 S e oye un rumor. Ya se aproxima. Del país del norte llega un gran desasosiego, que hará de todas las ciudades de Judá un desierto, una guarida de chacales.

The voice of tidings, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.

23 Y o sé bien, Señor, que nadie es dueño de su vida, ni nadie puede por sí mismo ordenar sus pasos.

O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

24 ¡ Castígame, Señor, pero hazlo con justicia! ¡No me castigues con tu furor, pues de lo contrario acabarás conmigo!

O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure: not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

25 D errama tu enojo sobre los pueblos que no te conocen y sobre las naciones que no invocan tu nombre, porque se devoraron a Jacob; acabaron por completo con él, y dejaron en ruinas su país.

Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.
