1 N o hay nada como ser sabio. No hay nada como saber explicarlo todo. La sabiduría ilumina el rostro del hombre y cambia su semblante hosco.

Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

2 T e aconsejo cumplir con las órdenes del rey y con tu palabra jurada ante Dios.

I counsel thee, Keep the king's command, and that in regard of the oath of God.

3 N o te retires de su presencia con premura. No insistas en contrariarlo, porque él hará lo que le plazca.

Be not hasty to go out of his presence; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.

4 L a palabra del rey es ley, y nadie puede cuestionarle nada.

For the king's word hath power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

5 E l que cumple con sus órdenes no sufrirá ningún mal, y la mente del sabio discierne el mejor momento de cumplirlas,

Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment:

6 p ues todo proyecto tiene su momento para realizarlo. Pero pesa sobre el hombre un gran problema,

for to every purpose there is a time and judgment; because the misery of man is great upon him:

7 y es que éste no sabe lo que va a pasar, ni cuándo pasará, ni hay tampoco nadie que se lo diga.

for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be?

8 N adie tiene poder sobre el espíritu, para retenerlo, ni tiene tampoco poder sobre la hora de la muerte. En esa guerra, las armas no sirven de nada, ni tampoco puede la maldad poner a salvo al malvado.

There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

9 T odo esto lo he visto, y he dedicado mi corazón al estudio de todo lo que se hace bajo el sol. Hay momentos en que los unos dominan a los otros, para su propio mal. Desigualdades de la vida

All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt.

10 T ambién he visto que a los inicuos se les sepulta con honra, mientras que a los que frecuentaban el lugar santo se les echó al olvido en la misma ciudad donde se condujeron con rectitud. ¡Y también esto es vanidad!

So I saw the wicked buried, and they came to the grave; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity.

11 Y es que cuando la sentencia para castigar una mala acción no se ejecuta de inmediato, el corazón de los mortales se dispone a seguir actuando mal.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

12 E l pecador puede pecar cien veces y prolongar su vida; sin embargo, yo sé que a los que muestran temor y reverencia ante Dios también les irá bien;

Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his days, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before him:

13 p or el contrario, a los malvados, a los que no muestran reverencia ante Dios, no les irá bien ni se les prolongará la vida, sino que se desvanecerán como una sombra.

but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

14 S obre la tierra sucede algo que no tiene sentido: hay gente honrada que es tratada como si cometiera cosas malas, y hay gente malvada que es tratada como si hiciera cosas buenas. Y yo digo que también esto es vanidad.

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth, that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

15 P or eso alabo a la alegría, pues los mortales no tenemos bajo el sol otro bien que no sea el de comer y beber y divertirnos. Sólo esto nos queda de tanto afanarnos durante la vida que Dios nos concede bajo el sol.

Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that shall abide with him in his labor all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun.

16 C omo dirigí mi atención hacia el conocimiento y la sabiduría, para entender todo lo que se hace sobre la tierra, algunas veces no podía conciliar el sueño ni de noche ni de día.

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes),

17 A sí pude ver todo lo que Dios ha hecho, y vi también que el hombre no alcanza a comprender todo lo que se hace bajo el sol. Por más que se esfuerce por entenderlo, no lo entenderá; y aun cuando el sabio asegure entenderlo, no por eso lo entenderá.

then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because however much a man labor to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea moreover, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
