1 ¶ A wise son takes his father’s chastening: but a scorner does not hear rebuke.

El hijo sabio acepta la disciplina de su padre, pero el escarnecedor no escucha la reprensión.

2 ¶ Of the fruit of his mouth man shall eat well: but the soul of the transgressors shall starve.

Del fruto de su boca el hombre comerá el bien, pero el deseo de los pérfidos es la violencia.

3 ¶ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens his lips often shall have calamity.

El que guarda su boca, preserva su vida; el que mucho abre sus labios, termina en ruina.

4 ¶ The soul of the sluggard desires, and attains nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

El alma del perezoso desea, pero nada consigue, mas el alma de los diligentes queda satisfecha.

5 ¶ The righteous man hates lying: but the wicked man makes himself loathsome, and abominable.

El justo aborrece la falsedad, mas el impío causa repugnancia y vergüenza.

6 ¶ Righteousness keeps the one of the perfect way: but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

La justicia guarda al íntegro en su camino, mas la maldad trastorna al pecador.

7 ¶ There are those that make themselves rich, yet have nothing: there are those that make themselves poor, yet have great riches.

Hay quien pretende ser rico, y nada tiene; hay quien pretende ser pobre, y tiene una gran fortuna.

8 ¶ The redemption of a man’s life is his riches: but the poor does not hear rebuke.

El rescate de la vida de un hombre está en sus riquezas, pero el pobre no oye amenazas.

9 ¶ The light of the righteous shall rejoice: but the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

La luz de los justos brilla alegremente, pero la lámpara de los impíos se apaga.

10 ¶ Pride shall certainly give birth to contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Por la soberbia sólo viene la contienda, mas con los que reciben consejos está la sabiduría.

11 ¶ The riches of vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathers by labour shall increase.

La fortuna obtenida con fraude disminuye, pero el que la recoge con trabajo la aumenta.

12 ¶ Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

La esperanza que se demora enferma el corazón, pero el deseo cumplido es árbol de vida.

13 ¶ Whosoever despises the word shall perish by it: but he that fears the commandment shall be rewarded.

El que desprecia la palabra pagará por ello, pero el que teme el mandamiento será recompensado.

14 ¶ The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

La enseñanza del sabio es fuente de vida, para apartarse de los lazos de la muerte.

15 ¶ Good understanding brings forth grace: but the way of transgressors is hard.

El buen entendimiento produce favor, mas el camino de los pérfidos es duro.

16 ¶ Every sane man works according to wisdom: but the fool shall manifest his folly.

Todo hombre prudente obra con conocimiento, pero el necio ostenta necedad.

17 ¶ A bad messenger shall fall into evil: but a faithful ambassador is medicine.

El mensajero perverso cae en la adversidad, pero el enviado fiel trae sanidad.

18 ¶ Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuses chastening: but he that regards reproof shall be honoured.

Pobreza y vergüenza vendrán al que menosprecia la instrucción, mas el que acepta la reprensión será honrado.

19 ¶ The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

Deseo cumplido es dulzura para el alma, pero abominación para los necios es apartarse del mal.

20 ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

El que anda con sabios será sabio, mas el compañero de los necios sufrirá daño.

21 ¶ Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous good shall be repaid.

A los pecadores los persigue el mal, pero los justos serán recompensados con el bien.

22 ¶ A good man shall leave an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

El hombre bueno deja herencia a los hijos de sus hijos, pero la riqueza del pecador está reservada para el justo.

23 ¶ In the fallow ground of the poor there is much bread, but it is lost for lack of judgment.

El barbecho de los pobres tiene mucho de comer, pero es barrido por la injusticia.

24 ¶ He that cuts short chastening hates his son, but he that loves him chastens him early.

El que escatima la vara odia a su hijo, mas el que lo ama lo disciplina con diligencia.

25 ¶ The righteous eats until his soul is satisfied, but the belly of the wicked shall lack.

El justo come hasta saciar su alma, pero el vientre de los impíos sufre escasez.
