1 ¶ Saul was as a son of one year when he began to reign, and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

Saúl tenía treinta años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó cuarenta y dos años sobre Israel.

2 S aul chose three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in Mount Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and of the rest of the people he sent each one to his tent.

Saúl escogió para sí tres mil hombres de Israel, de los cuales dos mil estaban con Saúl en Micmas y en la región montañosa de Betel, y mil estaban con Jonatán en Geba de Benjamín. Y al resto del pueblo lo despidió cada uno a su tienda.

3 A nd Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul caused the shofar to be blown throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

Y Jonatán hirió la guarnición de los filisteos que estaba en Geba, y lo supieron los filisteos. Entonces Saúl tocó la trompeta por toda la tierra diciendo: Oigan los hebreos.

4 A nd all Israel heard it said that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines and also that Israel had become a stench unto the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

Y todo Israel oyó decir que Saúl había herido la guarnición de los filisteos, y también que Israel se había hecho odioso a los filisteos. Entonces el pueblo se reunió con Saúl en Gilgal.

5 T hen the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude; and they came up and pitched camp in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

Y los filisteos se reunieron para pelear contra Israel: treinta mil carros, seis mil hombres de a caballo y gente tan numerosa como la arena a la orilla del mar; y subieron y acamparon en Micmas, al oriente de Bet-avén.

6 W hen the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves and in thickets and in rocks and in high places and in pits.

Cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que estaban en un apuro (pues el pueblo estaba en gran aprieto), el pueblo se escondió en cuevas, en matorrales, en peñascos, en sótanos y en fosos.

7 A nd some of the Hebrews went over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

También algunos de los hebreos pasaron el Jordán a la tierra de Gad y de Galaad. Pero Saúl estaba todavía en Gilgal, y todo el pueblo le seguía tembloroso.

8 ¶ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were deserting from him.

El esperó siete días, conforme al tiempo que Samuel había señalado, pero Samuel no llegaba a Gilgal, y el pueblo se le dispersaba.

9 T hen Saul said, Bring me a burnt offering and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

Entonces Saúl dijo: Traedme el holocausto y las ofrendas de paz. Y él ofreció el holocausto.

10 A nd it came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him that he might bless him.

Y sucedió que tan pronto como terminó de ofrecer el holocausto, he aquí que Samuel vino; y Saúl salió a su encuentro para saludarle.

11 T hen Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were leaving me and that thou didst not come within the days appointed and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash,

Pero Samuel dijo: ¿Qué has hecho? Y Saúl respondió: Como vi que el pueblo se me dispersaba, que tú no llegabas dentro de los días señalados y que los filisteos estaban reunidos en Micmas,

12 t herefore, I said, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD. I forced myself, therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

me dije: “Ahora los filisteos descenderán contra mí en Gilgal, y no he implorado el favor del Señor.” Así que me vi forzado, y ofrecí el holocausto.

13 T hen Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee, for now the LORD would have established thy kingdom over Israel for ever.

Y Samuel dijo a Saúl: Has obrado neciamente; no has guardado el mandamiento que el Señor tu Dios te ordenó, pues ahora el Señor hubiera establecido tu reino sobre Israel para siempre.

14 B ut now thy kingdom shall not stand; the LORD has sought a man after his own heart unto whom the LORD has commanded that he be captain over his people because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

Pero ahora tu reino no perdurará. El Señor ha buscado para sí un hombre conforme a su corazón, y el Señor le ha designado como príncipe sobre su pueblo porque tú no guardaste lo que el Señor te ordenó.

15 ¶ And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

Entonces Samuel se levantó y subió de Gilgal a Guibeá de Benjamín. Y Saúl contó el pueblo que se hallaba con él, como seiscientos hombres.

16 A nd Saul and Jonathan, his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

Y Saúl, su hijo Jonatán y el pueblo que se hallaba con ellos, estaban situados en Geba de Benjamín, mientras los filisteos acampaban en Micmas.

17 A nd three companies came out of the camp of the Philistines to destroy the land. One company turned unto the way that leads to Ophrah unto the land of Shual.

Y salieron los merodeadores del campamento de los filisteos en tres compañías; una compañía se dirigió por el camino de Ofra, a la tierra de Sual,

18 A nother company turned the way to Bethhoron, and another company turned to the way of the border that looks to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

otra compañía se dirigió por el camino de Bet-horón y la otra compañía se dirigió por el camino de la frontera que mira sobre el valle de Zeboim, hacia el desierto.

19 N ow there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, Lest peradventure the Hebrews make swords or spears.

En toda la tierra de Israel no podía hallarse ningún herrero, pues los filisteos decían: No sea que los hebreos hagan espadas o lanzas.

20 B ut all the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen each man his share and his coulter and his axe and his mattock

Y todo Israel tenía que descender a los filisteos, cada cual para afilar la reja de su arado, su azuela, su hacha o su aguijada.

21 a nd when they had nicks in the mattocks and the coulters and the forks and the axes, or to fix a goad.

El precio era dos tercios de siclo por las rejas de arado, las azuelas, las horquillas, las hachas, y para arreglar las aguijadas.

22 S o it came to pass in the day of battle that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan except with Saul and with Jonathan his son who had them.

Y sucedió que en el día de la batalla, no había espada ni lanza en mano de ninguna de la gente que estaba con Saúl y Jonatán, pero sí las había en mano de Saúl y de su hijo Jonatán.

23 A nd the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

Y la guarnición de los filisteos salió hacia el paso de Micmas.
