1 ¶ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; each one came in with his household.

Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que fueron a Egipto con Jacob; cada uno fue con su familia:

2 R euben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;

3 I ssachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Isacar, Zabulón y Benjamín;

4 D an and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

5 A nd all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Todas las personas que descendieron de Jacob fueron setenta almas. Pero José estaba ya en Egipto.

6 A nd Joseph died and all his brethren and all that generation.

Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.

7 A nd the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

Pero los hijos de Israel fueron fecundos y aumentaron mucho, y se multiplicaron y llegaron a ser poderosos en gran manera, y la tierra se llenó de ellos.

8 ¶ Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

Y se levantó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey que no había conocido a José;

9 A nd he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we.

y dijo a su pueblo: He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

10 N ow, therefore, let us be wise concerning him, that he not multiply and it come to pass that when war comes, he shall also join with our enemies and fight against us and so leave the land.

Procedamos, pues, astutamente con él no sea que se multiplique, y en caso de guerra, se una también con los que nos odian y pelee contra nosotros y se vaya de la tierra.

11 T herefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built the supply cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

Entonces pusieron sobre ellos capataces para oprimirlos con duros trabajos. Y edificaron para Faraón las ciudades de almacenaje, Pitón y Ramsés.

12 B ut the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew, so much that they loathed the sons of Israel.

Pero cuanto más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban y más se extendían, de manera que los egipcios llegaron a temer a los hijos de Israel.

13 A nd the Egyptians made the sons of Israel serve with rigor,

Los egipcios, pues, obligaron a los hijos de Israel a trabajar duramente,

14 a nd they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, making mortar and brick and in all manner of service in the field; all their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigor.

y les amargaron la vida con dura servidumbre en hacer barro y ladrillos y en toda clase de trabajo del campo; todos sus trabajos se los imponían con rigor.

15 ¶ And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and another named Puah;

Y el rey de Egipto habló a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra, y la otra Puá,

16 a nd he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women and see the sex, if it is a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.

y les dijo: Cuando estéis asistiendo a las hebreas a dar a luz, y las veáis sobre el lecho del parto, si es un hijo, le daréis muerte, pero si es una hija, entonces vivirá.

17 B ut the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them but gave the men children their lives.

Pero las parteras temían a Dios, y no hicieron como el rey de Egipto les había mandado, sino que dejaron con vida a los niños.

18 A nd the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing and have given the men children their lives?

El rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras y les dijo: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, y habéis dejado con vida a los niños?

19 A nd the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women, for they are lively and are delivered before the midwives come in unto them.

Respondieron las parteras a Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias, pues son robustas y dan a luz antes que la partera llegue a ellas.

20 T herefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and waxed very mighty.

Y Dios favoreció a las parteras; y el pueblo se multiplicó y llegó a ser muy poderoso.

21 A nd it came to pass because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

Y sucedió que por haber las parteras temido a Dios, El prosperó sus familias.

22 T hen Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall give them their lives.

Entonces Faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Todo hijo que nazca lo echaréis al Nilo, y a toda hija la dejaréis con vida.
