1 Y sucedió que cuando Sanbalat se enteró de que estábamos reedificando la muralla, se enfureció y se enojó mucho. Y burlándose de los judíos,

And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard that we are building the wall, that it is displeasing to him, and he is very angry and mocketh at the Jews,

2 h abló en presencia de sus hermanos y de los ricos de Samaria, y dijo: ¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿ La restaurarán para sí mismos? ¿Podrán ofrecer sacrificios? ¿Terminarán en un día? ¿Harán revivir las piedras de los escombros polvorientos, aun las quemadas?

and saith before his brethren and the force of Samaria, yea, he saith, `What the weak Jews doing? are they left to themselves? do they sacrifice? do they complete in a day? do they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish? -- and they burnt!'

3 T obías el amonita estaba cerca de él, y dijo: Aun lo que están edificando, si un zorro saltara sobre ello, derribaría su muralla de piedra.

And Tobiah the Ammonite by him and saith, `Also, that which they are building -- if a fox doth go up, then it hath broken down their stone wall.'

4 O ye, oh Dios nuestro, cómo somos despreciados. Devuelve su oprobio sobre sus cabezas y entrégalos por despojo en una tierra de cautividad.

Hear, O our God, for we have been despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, and give them for a spoil in a land of captivity;

5 N o perdones su iniquidad, ni su pecado sea borrado de delante de ti, porque han desmoralizado a los que edifican.

and do not cover over their iniquity, and their sin from before Thee let not be blotted out, for they have provoked to anger -- over-against those building.

6 Y edificamos la muralla hasta que toda la muralla estaba unida hasta la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo tuvo ánimo para trabajar.

And we build the wall, and all the wall is joined -- unto its half, and the people have a heart to work.

7 A conteció que cuando Sanbalat, Tobías, los árabes, los amonitas y los de Asdod se enteraron que continuaba la reparación de las murallas de Jerusalén, que las brechas comenzaban a ser cerradas, se enojaron mucho.

And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, that lengthening hath gone up to the walls of Jerusalem, that the breeches have begun to be stopped, then it is very displeasing to them,

8 Y todos ellos conspiraron juntos para venir a luchar contra Jerusalén y causar disturbio en ella.

and they conspire, all of them together, to come in to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.

9 E ntonces oramos a nuestro Dios, y para defendernos montamos guardia contra ellos de día y de noche.

And we pray unto our God, and appoint a watch against them, by day and by night, because of them.

10 P ero se decía en Judá: Desfallecen las fuerzas de los cargadores, y queda mucho escombro; nosotros no podemos reedificar la muralla.

And Judah saith, `The power of the burden-bearers hath become feeble, and the rubbish abundant, and we are not able to build on the wall.'

11 Y nuestros enemigos decían: No sabrán ni verán hasta que entremos en medio de ellos y los matemos y hagamos cesar la obra.

And our adversaries say, `They do not know, nor see, till that we come in to their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.'

12 Y sucedió que cuando los judíos que habitaban cerca de ellos vinieron y nos dijeron diez veces: Subirán contra nosotros de todo lugar adonde os volváis,

And it cometh to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places whither ye return -- against us.

13 e ntonces aposté hombres en las partes más bajas del lugar, detrás de la muralla y en los sitios descubiertos; aposté al pueblo por familias con sus espadas, sus lanzas y sus arcos.

And I appoint at the lowest of the places, at the back of the wall, in the clear places, yea, I appoint the people, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 C uando vi su temor, me levanté y dije a los nobles, a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: No les tengáis miedo; acordaos del Señor, que es grande y temible, y luchad por vuestros hermanos, vuestros hijos, vuestras hijas, vuestras mujeres y vuestras casas.

And I see, and rise up, and say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `Be not afraid of them; the Lord, the great and the fearful, remember ye, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.'

15 S ucedió que nuestros enemigos se enteraron que lo sabíamos y que Dios había desbaratado sus planes; entonces todos nosotros volvimos a la muralla, cada uno a su trabajo.

And it cometh to pass, when our enemies have heard that it hath been known to us, and God doth frustrate their counsel, and we turn back, all of us, unto the wall, each unto his work;

16 Y sucedió que desde aquel día la mitad de mis hombres trabajaban en la obra mientras que la otra mitad portaba las lanzas, los escudos, los arcos y las corazas; y los capitanes estaban detrás de toda la casa de Judá.

yea, it cometh to pass, from that day, half of my servants are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the heads behind all the house of Judah.

17 L os que reedificaban la muralla y los que llevaban cargas llevaban la carga en una mano trabajando en la obra, y en la otra empuñaban un arma.

The builders on the wall, and the bearers of the burden, those lading, with one of his hands is working in the business, and one is laying hold of the missile.

18 C ada uno de los que reedificaban tenía ceñida al lado su espada mientras edificaba. El que tocaba la trompeta estaba junto a mí.

And the builders each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a trumpet beside me.

19 Y dije a los nobles, a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: La obra es grande y extensa, y estamos separados en la muralla, lejos el uno del otro.

And I say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off one from another;

20 E n el lugar que oigáis el sonido de la trompeta, reuníos allí con nosotros; nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros.

in the place that ye hear the voice of the trumpet thither ye are gathered unto us; our God doth fight for us.'

21 H acíamos el trabajo con la mitad empuñando lanzas desde el despuntar del alba hasta que salían las estrellas.

And we are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of the spears, from the going up of the dawn till the coming forth of the stars.

22 E n aquel tiempo dije también al pueblo: Cada hombre con su sirviente pase la noche dentro de Jerusalén, para que nos sirvan de guarda por la noche y de obrero por el día.

Also, at that time I said to the people, `Let each with his servant lodge in the midst of Jerusalem, and they have been to us by night a guard, and by day the work:'

23 N i yo, ni mis hermanos, ni mis sirvientes, ni los hombres de la guardia que me seguían, ninguno de nosotros se quitó la ropa; cada uno llevaba su arma en la mano.

and there are none -- I and my brethren and my servants, the men of the guard who after me -- there are none of us putting off our garments, each his vessel of water.
