1 C uvintele regelui Lemuel – oracolul pe care l-a învăţat de la mama lui:

The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.

2 F iule, ce să-ţi spun ? Fiul meu, ce să-ţi spun ? Ce să-ţi spun, fiul jurămintelor mele?

What, my son? and what, O son of my womb? And what, O son of my vows?

3 N u-ţi da femeilor puterea ta şi nici căile tale celor ce distrug regii!

Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

4 N u se cuvine regilor, Lemuele, nu se cuvine regilor să bea vin, nici conducătorilor să dorească băuturi tari,

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Nor for princes to say, Where is strong drink?

5 c a nu cumva, bând, să uite Legea şi să încalce drepturile tuturor celor asupriţi.

Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the justice due to any that is afflicted.

6 D aţi băuturi tari celui ce piere şi vin celui ce are viaţa amară,

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, And wine unto the bitter in soul:

7 c a să bea, să-şi uite sărăcia şi să nu-şi mai aducă aminte de necazul lui!

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.

8 D eschide-ţi gura pentru cel mut, pentru drepturile tuturor celor nenorociţi!

Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of all such as are left desolate.

9 D eschide-ţi gura şi judecă corect; apără drepturile celui asuprit şi nevoiaş! Epilog: Femeia cinstită

Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And minister justice to the poor and needy.

10 F emeia cinstită! Cine o poate găsi? Ea este mult mai valoroasă decât mărgăritarele.

A worthy woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies.

11 I nima soţului ei se încrede în ea şi nu-i va lipsi nimic de valoare.

The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he shall have no lack of gain.

12 E a îi face bine, nu rău, în toate zilele vieţii ei.

She doeth him good and not evil All the days of her life.

13 E a caută lână şi fuior şi lucrează cu plăcere cu înseşi mâinile ei.

She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands.

14 E a este ca o corabie de negoţ; de departe îşi aduce hrana.

She is like the merchant-ships; She bringeth her bread from afar.

15 E a se scoală când este încă întuneric, dă hrană familiei sale şi ceea ce este rânduit – slujnicelor sale.

She riseth also while it is yet night, And giveth food to her household, And their task to her maidens.

16 E a se gândeşte la un teren şi îl cumpără; din venitul câştigat plantează o vie.

She considereth a field, and buyeth it; With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 E a se încinge cu putere şi îşi întăreşte braţele.

She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms.

18 E a simte că negoţul îi merge bine şi candela ei nu se stinge noaptea.

She perceiveth that her merchandise is profitable: Her lamp goeth not out by night.

19 S altă furca de tors cu mâna şi prinde fusul cu degetele ei.

She layeth her hands to the distaff, And her hands hold the spindle.

20 E a îşi deschide braţele pentru cel sărac şi îşi întinde mâinile către cel nevoiaş.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 C ând ninge, ea nu se teme pentru familia ei, pentru că toată familia ei este îmbrăcată în stacojiu.

She is not afraid of the snow for her household; For all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 E a îşi face cuverturi; are haine de in subţire şi purpură.

She maketh for herself carpets of tapestry; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

23 S oţul ei este respectat la porţile cetăţii, când stă printre bătrânii ţării.

Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 E a face haine de lână, apoi le vinde şi dă cingători negustorilor.

She maketh linen garments and selleth them, And delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 S e îmbracă în putere şi demnitate şi râde de ziua de mâine.

Strength and dignity are her clothing; And she laugheth at the time to come.

26 V orbeşte cu înţelepciune şi învăţături plăcute sunt pe limba ei.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And the law of kindness is on her tongue.

27 E a veghează asupra căilor familiei sale şi nu mănâncă pâinea lenevirii.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 F iii ei se ridică în picioare şi o numesc binecuvântată, cum, de altfel, şi soţul ei o laudă:

Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praiseth her, saying:

29 „ Multe femei fac lucruri nobile, dar tu le întreci pe toate!“

Many daughters have done worthily, But thou excellest them all.

30 F armecul este înşelător şi frumuseţea este trecătoare, dar femeia care se teme de Domnul va fi lăudată.

Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; But a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised.

31 A preciaţi-o pentru rodul muncii ei şi faptele ei s-o laude la porţile cetăţii!

Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her works praise her in the gates.
