1 N u invidia pe oamenii răi şi nu dori să fii cu ei,

Be not thou envious against evil men; Neither desire to be with them:

2 c ăci inima lor plăsmuieşte violenţă, iar buzele lor vorbesc despre cum să facă necaz.

For their heart studieth oppression, And their lips talk of mischief.

3 P rin înţelepciune este construită o casă şi prin pricepere este consolidată;

Through wisdom is a house builded; And by understanding it is established;

4 p rin cunoştinţă sunt umplute odăile ei cu tot felul de bogăţii preţioase şi plăcute.

And by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 U n om înţelept este puternic şi cel priceput îşi măreşte puterea,

A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might,

6 c ăci pentru a purta un război ai nevoie de călăuzire şi pentru a avea biruinţă – de un mare număr de sfetnici.

For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

7 Î nţelepciunea este prea înaltă pentru un prost; la poarta cetăţii el nu va avea nimic de spus.

Wisdom is too high for a fool: He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8 C ine unelteşte să facă rău va fi numit intrigant.

He that deviseth to do evil, Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

9 P lanul prostiei este păcat şi cel batjocoritor este o urâciune înaintea oamenilor.

The thought of foolishness is sin; And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 D acă te clatini în ziua necazului, mică îţi este puterea.

If thou faint in the day of adversity, Thy strength is small.

11 S alvează-i pe cei duşi la moarte şi nu te îndepărta de cei ce sunt aproape să fie măcelăriţi!

Deliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.

12 D acă spui: „Ah! n-am ştiut lucrul acesta!“ crezi că nu vede Cel Ce cântăreşte inimile? Nu va cunoaşte Cel Ce veghează asupra vieţii tale şi nu va răsplăti El fiecăruia după faptele lui?

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

13 F iul meu, mănâncă miere căci este bună şi mierea din fagure este dulce pentru gustul tău!

My son, eat thou honey, for it is good; And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste:

14 S ă ştii, de asemenea, că înţelepciunea este dulce pentru sufletul tău; dacă o găseşti, ai un viitor, iar speranţa nu-ţi va fi frântă.

So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul; If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward, And thy hope shall not be cut off.

15 R ăule, nu pândi locuinţa celui drept şi nu plănui distrugerea sălaşului său,

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous; Destroy not his resting-place:

16 c ăci cel drept de şapte ori cade şi se ridică iarăşi, dar cei răi vor fi prăbuşiţi de nenorocire.

For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

17 N u te bucura când cade duşmanul tău şi să nu ţi se înveselească inima când se împiedică,

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

18 c a nu cumva să vadă Domnul, să nu-i placă şi să-Şi întoarcă mânia de la el!

Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him, And he turn away his wrath from him.

19 N u te tulbura din cauza oamenilor răi şi nu fi invidios pe cei răi,

Fret not thyself because of evil-doers; Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

20 c ăci cel rău nu are nici un viitor, iar candela celor răi se va stinge!

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

21 F iul meu, teme-te de Domnul şi de rege şi nu te însoţi cu rebelii,

My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; And company not with them that are given to change:

22 c ăci distrugerea lor va veni pe neaşteptate şi cine poate şti sfârşitul pe care-l vor aduce cei doi? Alte proverbe ale înţelepţilor

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?

23 U rmătoarele sunt, şi ele, spusele înţelepţilor. Nu este bine să fii părtinitor la judecată.

These also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

24 O ricine spune celui vinovat: „Tu eşti nevinovat!“, va fi blestemat de popoare şi detestat de neamuri.

He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him:

25 C elor ce mustră vinovăţia le va merge bine şi o mare binecuvântare va veni peste ei.

But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, And a good blessing shall come upon them.

26 U n răspuns sincer este ca un sărut pe buze.

He kisseth the lips Who giveth a right answer.

27 T ermină-ţi munca de afară, pregăteşte-ţi terenul, şi după aceea, construieşte-ţi casa!

Prepare thy work without, And make it ready for thee in the field; And afterwards build thy house.

28 N u mărturisi fără motiv împotriva semenului tău şi nu înşela cu buzele tale.

Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; And deceive not with thy lips.

29 N u spune: „Îi voi face cum mi-a făcut şi el mie, îi voi răsplăti după faptele lui!“

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.

30 A m trecut pe lângă ogorul unui leneş şi pe lângă via unui om nechibzuit:

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

31 e ra plină de spini, pământul era acoperit cu buruieni, iar zidul de piatră era prăbuşit.

And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, The face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32 A m luat aminte la ce am observat şi am tras învăţătură din ce am văzut:

Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction:

33 s ă mai dormi puţin, să mai aţipeşti puţin, să mai încrucişezi puţin mâinile ca să dormi …,

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep;

34 ş i sărăcia vine peste tine ca un hoţ, iar lipsa – ca un om înarmat.

So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.
