1 R oboam s-a dus la Şehem, pentru că tot Israelul venise la Şehem să-l facă rege.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

2 C ând Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, a auzit lucrul acesta, el se afla în Egipt, acolo unde fugise de regele Solomon. Ieroboam s-a întors din Egipt.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt,

3 A u trimis să-l cheme, iar Ieroboam şi întreaga adunare a lui Israel au venit şi i-au vorbit lui Roboam astfel:

and they sent and called him), that Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 – Tatăl tău a îngreunat jugul nostru. Acum, despovărează-ne de slujba aspră a tatălui tău şi de jugul cel greu pe care l-a pus peste noi şi-ţi vom sluji!

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

5 – Duceţi-vă şi întoarceţi-vă la mine peste trei zile, le-a răspuns el. Şi poporul a plecat.

And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

6 R egele Roboam s-a sfătuit cu bătrânii care i-au slujit tatălui său, Solomon, în timpul vieţii acestuia, întrebându-i: – Ce mă sfătuiţi să răspund acestui popor?

And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?

7 – Dacă, astăzi, vei fi un slujitor pentru cei din poporul acesta, i-au răspuns ei, dacă le vei sluji şi dacă le vei răspunde prin cuvinte plăcute, ei vor fi slujitorii tăi toată viaţa lor.

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

8 Î nsă Roboam nu a luat în seamă sfatul pe care i l-au dat bătrânii, ci a cerut şi sfatul tinerilor cu care a copilărit şi care-i slujeau.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.

9 E l i-a întrebat: – Ce mă sfătuiţi? Cum să răspund acestui popor care mi-a cerut să-l despovărez de jugul pe care tatăl meu l-a pus peste el?

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?

10 T inerii care copilăriseră împreună cu el i-au răspuns: – Acestui popor care ţi-a zis că tatăl tău i-a îngreunat jugul şi că tu trebuie să-l iei de peste el, să-i spui astfel: „Degetul meu cel mic este mai gros decât şoldurile tatălui meu.

And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou speak unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.

11 T atăl meu a pus un jug greu peste voi, dar eu voi adăuga mai mult la jugul vostru. Tatăl meu v-a pedepsit cu bice, dar eu vă voi pedepsi cu gârbace.“

And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 I eroboam, însoţit de tot poporul, a venit la Roboam a treia zi, după cum le poruncise regele când le zisese: „Întoarceţi-vă la mine peste trei zile!“

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 R egele i-a răspuns aspru poporului. El nu a luat în seamă sfatul pe care i l-au dat bătrânii

And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him,

14 ş i le-a vorbit potrivit sfatului tinerilor: – Tatăl meu v-a îngreunat jugul, dar eu voi adăuga mai mult la jugul vostru. Tatăl meu v-a pedepsit cu bice, dar eu vă voi pedepsi cu gârbace.

and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 A stfel regele nu a ascultat plângerea poporului, fiindcă această întorsătură a lucrurilor venea de la Domnul, pentru ca Domnul să-Şi împlinească cuvântul pe care îl rostise cu privire la Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, prin Ahia din Şilo.

So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was a thing brought about of Jehovah, that he might establish his word, which Jehovah spake by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 C ând toţi cei din Israel au văzut că regele a refuzat să-i asculte, i-au răspuns astfel: – Ce parte avem noi în David? N-avem nici o moştenire în fiul lui Işai. La corturile tale, Israel! Vezi-ţi de Casa ta, David! Şi poporul Israel a plecat acasă.

And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

17 R oboam însă a continuat să domnească peste israeliţii care locuiau în cetăţile lui Iuda.

But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 R egele Roboam l-a trimis la ei pe Adoniram, cel care era mai mare peste oamenii de corvoadă, dar toţi israeliţii l-au omorât împroşcându-l cu pietre. Atunci regele Roboam s-a grăbit să se suie în car ca să fugă la Ierusalim.

Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to taskwork; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 A şa s-a răzvrătit Israel împotriva Casei lui David şi aşa au şi rămas până astăzi.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

20 Î ntregul Israel, auzind că Ieroboam se întorsese, au trimis să-l cheme la adunare şi l-au numit rege peste tot Israelul. Nici unul nu s-a dus după Casa lui David, în afară de seminţia lui Iuda.

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was returned, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 C ând Roboam a ajuns la Ierusalim, a adunat toată Casa lui Iuda şi seminţia lui Beniamin – o sută optzeci de mii de bărbaţi aleşi şi gata de luptă – ca să lupte împotriva Casei lui Israel şi să aducă din nou regatul sub stăpânirea lui Roboam, fiul lui Solomon.

And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 D ar Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu a venit la Şemaia, omul lui Dumnezeu, zicându-i astfel:

But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 „ Spune-le lui Roboam, fiul lui Solomon, regele lui Iuda, întregii case a lui Iuda şi a lui Beniamin, precum şi celor rămaşi din popor

Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,

24 c ă aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Nu vă ridicaţi la luptă împotriva fraţilor voştri, israeliţii! Întoarceţi-vă fiecare acasă, căci de la Mine a venit lucrul acesta.»“ Ei au ascultat Cuvântul Domnului şi s-au întors acasă, potrivit poruncii Domnului. Ieroboam instituie cultul viţelului în Israel

Thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is of me. So they hearkened unto the word of Jehovah, and returned and went their way, according to the word of Jehovah.

25 I eroboam a zidit cetatea Şehem în regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim şi a locuit acolo; apoi a ieşit de acolo şi a zidit cetatea Peniel.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and he went out from thence, and built Penuel.

26 E l s-a gândit: „S-ar putea ca acum regatul să se întoarcă la Casa lui David.

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now will the kingdom return to the house of David:

27 D acă acest popor se va duce la Casa Domnului, în Ierusalim, ca să aducă jertfe, inima acestui popor va trece de partea stăpânului lor, Roboam, regele lui Iuda; pe mine mă vor omorî şi se vor întoarce la Roboam, regele lui Iuda.“

if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem, then will the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 D upă ce s-a sfătuit, regele a făcut doi viţei de aur şi a zis poporului: „Este prea mult pentru voi să mergeţi până la Ierusalim. Israele, iată zeii tăi care te-au scos din ţara Egiptului!“

Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 L -a pus pe unul la Betel, iar pe celălalt la Dan.

And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan.

30 Ş i acest lucru a devenit un prilej de păcătuire; poporul mergea până la Dan să se închine înaintea unuia dintre viţei.

And this thing became a sin; for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

31 I eroboam a construit sanctuare pe înălţimi şi a numit preoţi din tot poporul, deşi nu făceau parte dintre leviţi.

And he made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, that were not of the sons of Levi.

32 I eroboam a rânduit o sărbătoare în ziua a cincisprezecea a lunii a opta, ca aceea din Iuda, şi aducea jertfe pe altar. Iată ce a făcut la Betel: a adus jertfe viţeilor pe care-i făcuse şi a numit preoţi pentru înălţimile pe care le zidise.

And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he went up unto the altar; so did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places that he had made.

33 Î n ziua a cincisprezecea a lunii a opta, pe care o alesese singur, el a adus jertfe pe altarul pe care-l construise la Betel. Astfel, el a rânduit o sărbătoare pentru israeliţi şi se ducea la altar ca să ardă tămâie.

And he went up unto the altar which he had made in Beth-el on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart: and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up unto the altar, to burn incense.
