1 N on portare invidia ai malvagi e non desiderare di stare con loro,

Be not thou envious against evil men; Neither desire to be with them:

2 p erché il loro cuore medita rapine e le loro labbra parlano di fare del male.

For their heart studieth oppression, And their lips talk of mischief.

3 L a casa si edifica con la sapienza e si rende stabile con la prudenza.

Through wisdom is a house builded; And by understanding it is established;

4 C on la conoscenza si riempiono le stanze di ogni sorta di beni preziosi e gradevoli.

And by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 L 'uomo saggio è pieno di forza, e l'uomo che ha conoscenza accresce la sua potenza.

A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might,

6 P erché con saggi consigli potrai fare la tua guerra, e nel gran numero di consiglieri c'è vittoria.

For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

7 L a sapienza è troppo alta per lo stolto, egli non apre mai la bocca alla porta della città.

Wisdom is too high for a fool: He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8 C hi pensa di fare il male sarà chiamato maestro di intrighi.

He that deviseth to do evil, Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

9 I l pensiero di stoltezza è peccato e lo schernitore è un abominio per gli uomini.

The thought of foolishness is sin; And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 S e vieni meno nel giorno dell'avversità, la tua forza è molto poca.

If thou faint in the day of adversity, Thy strength is small.

11 L ibera quelli che sono trascinati verso la morte e trattieni quelli che sono portati al macello.

Deliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.

12 S e dici: «Ecco, noi non lo sapevamo». Colui che pesa i cuori non lo vede? Colui che custodisce la tua anima non lo sa forse? Egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

13 F iglio mio, mangia il miele perché è buono; un favo di miele sarà dolce al tuo palato.

My son, eat thou honey, for it is good; And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste:

14 C osí sarà la conoscenza della sapienza per la tua anima. Se la trovi, ci sarà un futuro e la tua speranza non sarà distrutta.

So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul; If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward, And thy hope shall not be cut off.

15 O empio, non insidiare la dimora del giusto, non devastare il suo luogo di riposo,

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous; Destroy not his resting-place:

16 p erché il giusto cade sette volte e si rialza, ma gli empi sono travolti nella sventura.

For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

17 Q uando il tuo nemico cade, non rallegrarti; quando è atterrato, il tuo cuore non gioisca,

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

18 p erché l'Eterno non veda e gli dispiaccia e non allontani da lui la sua ira.

Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him, And he turn away his wrath from him.

19 N on irritarti a motivo di chi fa il male e non portare invidia agli empi,

Fret not thyself because of evil-doers; Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

20 p erché non ci sarà avvenire per il malvagio; la lampada degli empi sarà spenta.

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

21 F iglio mio, temi l'Eterno e il re, non associarti con quelli che vogliono cambiare;

My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; And company not with them that are given to change:

22 l a loro calamità sopraggiungerà improvvisa, e la rovina di entrambi chi la conosce?

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?

23 A nche queste cose sono per i saggi. Non è bene usare preferenze personali in giudizio.

These also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

24 C hi dice all'empio: «Tu sei giusto» i popoli lo malediranno e le nazioni lo esecreranno.

He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him:

25 M a quelli che rimproverano l'empio troveranno delizie, e su di loro scenderanno le migliori benedizioni.

But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, And a good blessing shall come upon them.

26 C hi dà una risposta giusta dà un bacio sulle labbra.

He kisseth the lips Who giveth a right answer.

27 M etti in ordine i tuoi affari di fuori metti a posto i tuoi campi e poi costruirai la tua casa.

Prepare thy work without, And make it ready for thee in the field; And afterwards build thy house.

28 N on testimoniare senza motivo contro il tuo prossimo e non ingannare con le tue labbra.

Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; And deceive not with thy lips.

29 N on dire: «Come ha fatto a me, cosí farò a lui; gli renderò secondo l'opera sua».

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.

30 S on passato presso il campo del pigro e presso la vigna dell'uomo privo di senno;

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

31 e d ecco, dovunque crescevano le spine, i rovi ne coprivano il suolo e il muro di pietre era crollato.

And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, The face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32 O sservando ciò, riflettei attentamente; da quel che vidi ne ricavai una lezione:

Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction:

33 d ormire un po' sonnecchiare un po' incrociare un po' le braccia per riposare;

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep;

34 c osí la tua povertà verrà come un ladro e la tua indigenza come un uomo armato.

So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.
