1 L os proverbios de Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel:

The proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 p ara aprender sabiduría e instrucción, para discernir dichos profundos,

That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3 p ara recibir instrucción en sabia conducta, justicia, juicio y equidad;

Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

4 p ara dar a los simples prudencia, y a los jóvenes conocimiento y discreción.

That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

5 E l sabio oirá y crecerá en conocimiento, y el inteligente adquirirá habilidad,

The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

6 p ara entender proverbio y metáfora, las palabras de los sabios y sus enigmas.

That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

7 E l temor del Señor es el principio de la sabiduría; los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la instrucción. Peligro de las malas compañías

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

8 O ye, hijo mío, la instrucción de tu padre, y no abandones la enseñanza de tu madre;

My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

9 p orque guirnalda de gracia son para tu cabeza, y collares para tu cuello.

For they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

10 H ijo mío, si los pecadores te quieren seducir, no consientas.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

11 S i dicen: Ven con nosotros, pongámonos al asecho para derramar sangre, sin causa asechemos al inocente,

If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

12 d evorémoslos vivos como el Seol, enteros, como los que descienden al abismo;

Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

13 h allaremos toda clase de preciadas riquezas, llenaremos nuestras casas de botín;

We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

14 e cha tu suerte con nosotros, todos tendremos una bolsa;

Throw in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

15 h ijo mío, no andes en el camino con ellos, aparta tu pie de su senda,

My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

16 p orque sus pies corren hacia el mal, y a derramar sangre se apresuran.

For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

17 P orque es en vano tender la red ante los ojos de cualquier ave;

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

18 p ero ellos a su propia sangre asechan, tienden lazo a sus propias vidas.

But they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19 T ales son los caminos de todo el que se beneficia por la violencia: que quita la vida de sus poseedores. Habla la sabiduría

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

20 L a sabiduría clama en la calle, en las plazas alza su voz;

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

21 c lama en las esquinas de las calles concurridas; a la entrada de las puertas de la ciudad pronuncia sus discursos:

She cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

22 ¿ Hasta cuándo, oh simples, amaréis la simpleza, y los burladores se deleitarán en hacer burla, y los necios aborrecerán el conocimiento ?

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

23 V olveos a mi reprensión: he aquí, derramaré mi espíritu sobre vosotros, os haré conocer mis palabras.

If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

24 P orque he llamado y habéis rehusado oír, he extendido mi mano y nadie ha hecho caso;

Because I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

25 h abéis desatendido todo consejo mío, y no habéis deseado mi reprensión;

And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

26 t ambién yo me reiré de vuestra calamidad, me burlaré cuando sobrevenga lo que teméis,

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

27 c uando venga como tormenta lo que teméis, y vuestra calamidad sobrevenga como torbellino, cuando vengan sobre vosotros tribulación y angustia.

When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

28 E ntonces me invocarán, pero no responderé; me buscarán con diligencia, pero no me hallarán;

Then will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

29 p orque odiaron el conocimiento, y no escogieron el temor del Señor,

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

30 n i quisieron aceptar mi consejo, y despreciaron toda mi reprensión;

Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

31 c omerán del fruto de su conducta, y de sus propias artimañas se hartarán.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

32 P orque el desvío de los simples los matará, y la complacencia de los necios los destruirá.

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 P ero el que me escucha vivirá seguro, y descansará, sin temor al mal.

But whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.
