1 G iobbe riprese il suo discorso e disse:

Job again took up his parable, and said,

2 « Come vive Dio che mi nega giustizia, come vive l’Onnipotente che mi amareggia la vita,

“As God lives, who has taken away my right, the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter.

3 f inché avrò fiato e il soffio di Dio sarà nelle mie narici,

(For the length of my life is still in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils);

4 l e mie labbra, no, non diranno nulla d’ingiusto, la mia lingua non proferirà falsità.

surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit.

5 L ungi da me l’idea di darvi ragione! Fino all’ultimo respiro non mi lascerò togliere la mia integrità.

Far be it from me that I should justify you. Until I die I will not put away my integrity from me.

6 H o preso a difendere la mia giustizia e non cederò; il cuore non mi rimprovera uno solo dei miei giorni.

I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

7 S ia trattato da malvagio il mio nemico, da perverso chi si erge contro di me!

“Let my enemy be as the wicked. Let him who rises up against me be as the unrighteous.

8 Q uale speranza rimane mai all’empio quando Dio gli toglie, gli rapisce la vita?

For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

9 D io presterà orecchio al grido di lui, quando gli piomberà addosso l’angoscia?

Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him?

10 P otrà egli trovare piacere nell’Onnipotente? Invocare Dio in ogni tempo?

Will he delight himself in the Almighty, and call on God at all times?

11 « Io vi mostrerò il modo di agire di Dio, non vi nasconderò i disegni dell’Onnipotente.

I will teach you about the hand of God. That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

12 M a queste cose voi tutti le avete osservate, perché dunque vi perdete in vani discorsi?

Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain?

13 E cco la parte che Dio riserva all’empio, l’eredità che l’uomo violento riceve dall’Onnipotente.

“This is the portion of a wicked man with God, the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty.

14 S e ha figli in gran numero sono per la spada; la sua discendenza non avrà pane per sfamarsi.

If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword. His offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

15 I superstiti sono sepolti dalla morte e le vedove loro non li piangono.

Those who remain of him shall be buried in death. His widows shall make no lamentation.

16 S e accumula l’argento come polvere, se ammucchia vestiti come fango,

Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare clothing as the clay;

17 l i ammucchia, sì, ma se ne vestirà il giusto; e l’argento l’avrà come sua parte l’innocente.

he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

18 L a casa che si costruisce è come quella del tarlo, come il capanno che fa il guardiano della vigna.

He builds his house as the moth, as a booth which the watchman makes.

19 V a a letto ricco, ma per l’ultima volta; apre gli occhi e non è più.

He lies down rich, but he shall not do so again. He opens his eyes, and he is not.

20 T errori lo sorprendono come acque; nel cuore della notte lo rapisce un uragano.

Terrors overtake him like waters. A storm steals him away in the night.

21 I l vento d’oriente lo porta via ed egli se ne va; lo spazza in un turbine dal luogo suo.

The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place.

22 D io gli scaglia addosso le sue frecce, senza pietà, per quanto egli tenti di scampare ai suoi colpi.

For it hurls at him, and does not spare, as he flees away from his hand.

23 L a gente batte le mani quando cade, fischia dietro a lui quando lascia il luogo dove stava.

Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.
