1 M ein Kind, behalte meine Rede und verbirg meine Gebote bei dir.

My son, keep my words; lay up within you my commandments and treasure them.

2 B ehalte meine Gebote, so wirst du leben, und mein Gesetz wie deinen Augapfel.

Keep my commandments and live, and keep my law and teaching as the apple (the pupil) of your eye.

3 B inde sie an deine Finger; schreibe sie auf die Tafel deines Herzens.

Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

4 S prich zur Weisheit: "Du bist meine Schwester", und nenne die Klugheit deine Freundin,

Say to skillful and godly Wisdom, You are my sister, and regard understanding or insight as your intimate friend—

5 d aß du behütet werdest vor dem fremden Weibe, vor einer andern, die glatte Worte gibt.

That they may keep you from the loose woman, from the adventuress who flatters with and makes smooth her words.

6 D enn am Fenster meines Hauses guckte ich durchs Gitter

For at the window of my house I looked out through my lattice.

7 u nd sah unter den Unverständigen und ward gewahr unter den Kindern eines törichten Jünglings,

And among the simple (empty-headed and emptyhearted) ones, I perceived among the youths a young man void of good sense,

8 d er ging auf der Gasse an einer Ecke und trat daher auf dem Wege bei ihrem Hause,

Sauntering through the street near the corner; and he went the way to her house

9 i n der Dämmerung, am Abend des Tages, da es Nacht ward und dunkel war.

In the twilight, in the evening; night black and dense was falling.

10 U nd siehe, da begegnete ihm ein Weib im Hurenschmuck, listig,

And behold, there met him a woman, dressed as a harlot and sly and cunning of heart.

11 w ild und unbändig, daß ihr Füße in ihrem Hause nicht bleiben können.

She is turbulent and willful; her feet stay not in her house;

12 J etzt ist sie draußen, jetzt auf der Gasse, und lauert an allen Ecken.

Now in the streets, now in the marketplaces, she sets her ambush at every corner.

13 U nd erwischte ihn und küßte ihn unverschämt und sprach zu ihm:

So she caught him and kissed him and with impudent face she said to him,

14 I ch habe Dankopfer für mich heute bezahlt für meine Gelübde.

Sacrifices of peace offerings were due from me; this day I paid my vows.

15 D arum bin herausgegangen, dir zu begegnen, dein Angesicht zu suchen, und habe dich gefunden.

So I came forth to meet you; diligently I sought your face, and I have found you.

16 I ch habe mein Bett schön geschmückt mit bunten Teppichen aus Ägypten.

I have spread my couch with rugs and cushions of tapestry, with striped sheets of fine linen of Egypt.

17 I ch habe mein Lager mit Myrrhe, Aloe und Zimt besprengt.

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18 K omm, laß und buhlen bis an den Morgen und laß und der Liebe pflegen.

Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; let us console and delight ourselves with love.

19 D enn der Mann ist nicht daheim; er ist einen fernen Weg gezogen.

For the man is not at home; he is gone on a long journey;

20 E r hat den Geldsack mit sich genommen; er wird erst aufs Fest wieder heimkommen.

He has taken a bag of money with him and will come home at the day appointed.

21 S ie überredete ihn mit vielen Worten und gewann ihn mit ihrem glatten Munde.

With much justifying and enticing argument she persuades him, with the allurements of her lips she leads him and forces him along.

22 E r folgt ihr alsbald nach, wie ein Ochse zur Fleischbank geführt wird, und wie zur Fessel, womit man die Narren züchtigt,

Suddenly he follows her reluctantly like an ox moving to the slaughter, like one in fetters going to the correction to a fool or like a dog enticed by food to the muzzle

23 b is sie ihm mit dem Pfeil die Leber spaltet; wie ein Vogel zum Strick eilt und weiß nicht, daß es ihm sein Leben gilt.

Till a dart pierces and inflames his vitals; then like a bird fluttering straight into the net, not knowing that it will cost him his life.

24 S o gehorchet mir nun, meine Kinder, und merket auf die Rede meines Mundes.

Listen to me now therefore, O you sons, and be attentive to the words of my mouth.

25 L aß dein Herz nicht weichen auf ihren Weg und laß dich nicht verführen auf ihrer Bahn.

Let not your heart incline toward her ways, do not stray into her paths.

26 D enn sie hat viele verwundet und gefällt, und sind allerlei Mächtige von ihr erwürgt.

For she has cast down many wounded; indeed, all her slain are a mighty host.

27 I hr Haus sind Wege zum Grab, da man hinunterfährt in des Todes Kammern.

Her house is the way to Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead), going down to the chambers of death.
