1 I ch erinnere euch aber, liebe Brüder, des Evangeliums, das ich euch verkündigt habe, welches ihr auch angenommen habt, in welchem ihr auch stehet,

And now let me remind you, brethren, of the Gospel (the glad tidings of salvation) which I proclaimed to you, which you welcomed and accepted and upon which your faith rests,

2 d urch welches ihr auch selig werdet: welchergestalt ich es euch verkündigt habe, so ihr's behalten habt; es wäre denn, daß ihr umsonst geglaubt hättet.

And by which you are saved, if you hold fast and keep firmly what I preached to you, unless you believed at first without effect and all for nothing.

3 D enn ich habe euch zuvörderst gegeben, was ich empfangen habe: daß Christus gestorben sei für unsre Sünden nach der Schrift,

For I passed on to you first of all what I also had received, that Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

4 u nd daß er begraben sei, und daß er auferstanden sei am dritten Tage nach der Schrift,

That He was buried, that He arose on the third day as the Scriptures foretold,

5 u nd daß er gesehen worden ist von Kephas, darnach von den Zwölfen.

And that He appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the Twelve.

6 D arnach ist er gesehen worden von mehr denn fünfhundert Brüdern auf einmal, deren noch viele leben, etliche aber sind entschlafen.

Then later He showed Himself to more than five hundred brethren at one time, the majority of whom are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.

7 D arnach ist er gesehen worden von Jakobus, darnach von allen Aposteln.

Afterward He was seen by James, then by all the apostles (the special messengers),

8 A m letzten ist er auch von mir, einer unzeitigen Geburt gesehen worden.

And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one prematurely and born dead '> no better than an unperfected fetus among living men].

9 D enn ich bin der geringste unter den Aposteln, der ich nicht wert bin, daß ich ein Apostel heiße, darum daß ich die Gemeinde Gottes verfolgt habe.

For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit or deserving to be called an apostle, because I once wronged and pursued and molested the church of God.

10 A ber von Gottes Gnade bin ich, was ich bin. Und seine Gnade an mir ist nicht vergeblich gewesen, sondern ich habe vielmehr gearbeitet denn sie alle; nicht aber ich, sondern Gottes Gnade, die mit mir ist.

But by the grace (the unmerited favor and blessing) of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not for nothing (fruitless and without effect). In fact, I worked harder than all of them, though it was not really I, but the grace (the unmerited favor and blessing) of God which was with me.

11 E s sei nun ich oder jene: also predigen wir, und also habt ihr geglaubt.

So, whether then it was I or they, this is what we preach and this is what you believed.

12 S o aber Christus gepredigt wird, daß er sei von den Toten auferstanden, wie sagen denn etliche unter euch, die Auferstehung der Toten sei nichts?

But now if Christ (the Messiah) is preached as raised from the dead, how is it that some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 I st die Auferstehung der Toten nichts, so ist auch Christus nicht auferstanden.

But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not risen;

14 I st aber Christus nicht auferstanden, so ist unsre Predigt vergeblich, so ist auch euer Glaube vergeblich.

And if Christ has not risen, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is devoid of truth and is fruitless (without effect, empty, imaginary, and unfounded).

15 W ir würden aber auch erfunden als falsche Zeugen Gottes, daß wir wider Gott gezeugt hätten, er hätte Christum auferweckt, den er nicht auferweckt hätte, wenn doch die Toten nicht auferstehen.

We are even discovered to be misrepresenting God, for we testified of Him that He raised Christ, Whom He did not raise in case it is true that the dead are not raised.

16 D enn so die Toten nicht auferstehen, so ist auch Christus nicht auferstanden.

For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised;

17 I st Christus aber nicht auferstanden, so ist euer Glaube eitel, so seid ihr noch in euren Sünden.

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is mere delusion, and you are still in your sins;

18 S o sind auch die, so in Christo entschlafen sind, verloren.

And further, those who have died in '> spiritual fellowship and union with] Christ have perished (are lost)!

19 H offen wir allein in diesem Leben auf Christum, so sind wir die elendesten unter allen Menschen.

If we who are in Christ have hope only in this life and that is all, then we are of all people most miserable and to be pitied.

20 N un ist aber Christus auferstanden von den Toten und der Erstling geworden unter denen, die da schlafen.

But the fact is that Christ (the Messiah) has been raised from the dead, and He became the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

21 S intemal durch einen Menschen der Tod und durch einen Menschen die Auferstehung der Toten kommt.

For since through a man that death also through a Man that the resurrection of the dead.

22 D enn gleichwie sie in Adam alle sterben, also werden sie in Christo alle lebendig gemacht werden.

For just as '> union of nature] in Adam all people die, so also '> union of nature] shall all in Christ be made alive.

23 E in jeglicher aber in seiner Ordnung: der Erstling Christus; darnach die Christo angehören, wenn er kommen wird;

But each in his own rank and turn: Christ (the Messiah) the firstfruits, then those who are Christ’s at His coming.

24 d arnach das Ende, wenn er das Reich Gott und dem Vater überantworten wird, wenn er aufheben wird alle Herrschaft und alle Obrigkeit und Gewalt.

After that comes the end (the completion), when He delivers over the kingdom to God the Father after rendering inoperative and abolishing every rule and every authority and power.

25 E r muß aber herrschen, bis daß er "alle seine Feinde unter seine Füße lege".

For must be King and reign until He has put all enemies under His feet.

26 D er letzte Feind, der aufgehoben wird, ist der Tod.

The last enemy to be subdued and abolished is death.

27 D enn "er hat ihm alles unter seine Füße getan". Wenn er aber sagt, daß es alles untertan sei, ist's offenbar, daß ausgenommen ist, der ihm alles untergetan hat.

For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when it says, All things are put in subjection, it is evident that He is excepted Who does the subjecting of all things to Him.

28 W enn aber alles ihm untertan sein wird, alsdann wird auch der Sohn selbst untertan sein dem, der ihm alles untergetan hat, auf daß Gott sei alles in allen.

However, when everything is subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also subject Himself to Who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all.

29 W as machen sonst, die sich taufen lassen über den Toten, so überhaupt die Toten nicht auferstehen? Was lassen sie sich taufen über den Toten?

Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized in behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them?

30 U nd was stehen wir alle Stunde in der Gefahr?

why do I live in peril every hour?

31 B ei unserm Ruhm, den ich habe in Christo Jesu, unserm HERRN, ich sterbe täglich.

by the pride which I have in you in '> fellowship and union with] Christ Jesus our Lord, that I die daily.

32 H abe ich nach menschlicher Meinung zu Ephesus mit wilden Tieren gefochten, was hilft's mir? So die Toten nicht auferstehen, "laßt uns essen und trinken; denn morgen sind wir tot!"

What do I gain if, merely from the human point of view, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will be dead.

33 L asset euch nicht verführen! Böse Geschwätze verderben gute Sitten.

Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character.

34 W erdet doch einmal recht nüchtern und sündigt nicht! Denn etliche wissen nichts von Gott; das sage ich euch zur Schande.

Awake '> from your drunken stupor and return] to sober sense and your right minds, and sin no more. For some of you have not the knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

35 M öchte aber jemand sagen: Wie werden die Toten auferstehen, und mit welchem Leibe werden sie kommen?

But someone will say, How can the dead be raised? With what body will they come forth?

36 D u Narr: was du säst, wird nicht lebendig, es sterbe denn.

You foolish man! Every time you plant seed, you sow something that does not come to life unless it dies first.

37 U nd was du säst, ist ja nicht der Leib, der werden soll, sondern ein bloßes Korn, etwa Weizen oder der andern eines.

Nor is the seed you sow then the body which it is going to have, but it is a naked kernel, perhaps of wheat or some of the rest of the grains.

38 G ott aber gibt ihm einen Leib, wie er will, und einem jeglichen von den Samen seinen eigenen Leib.

But God gives to it the body that He plans and sees fit, and to each kind of seed a body of its own.

39 N icht ist alles Fleisch einerlei Fleisch; sondern ein anderes Fleisch ist der Menschen, ein anderes des Viehs, ein anderes der Fische, ein anderes der Vögel.

For all flesh is not the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for beasts, another for birds, and another for fish.

40 U nd es sind himmlische Körper und irdische Körper; aber eine andere Herrlichkeit haben die himmlischen Körper und eine andere die irdischen.

There are heavenly bodies (sun, moon, and stars) and there are earthly bodies (men, animals, and plants), but the beauty and glory of the heavenly bodies is of one kind, while the beauty and glory of earthly bodies is a different kind.

41 E ine andere Klarheit hat die Sonne, eine andere Klarheit hat der Mond, eine andere Klarheit haben die Sterne; denn ein Stern übertrifft den andern an Klarheit.

The sun is glorious in one way, the moon is glorious in another way, and the stars are glorious in their own way; for one star differs from and surpasses another in its beauty and brilliance.

42 A lso auch die Auferstehung der Toten. Es wird gesät verweslich, und wird auferstehen unverweslich.

So it is with the resurrection of the dead. that is sown is perishable and decays, but that is resurrected is imperishable (immune to decay, immortal).

43 E s wird gesät in Unehre, und wird auferstehen in Herrlichkeit. Es wird gesät in Schwachheit, und wird auferstehen in Kraft.

It is sown in dishonor and humiliation; it is raised in honor and glory. It is sown in infirmity and weakness; it is resurrected in strength and endued with power.

44 E s wird gesät ein natürlicher Leib, und wird auferstehen ein geistlicher Leib. Ist ein natürlicher Leib, so ist auch ein geistlicher Leib.

It is sown a natural (physical) body; it is raised a supernatural (a spiritual) body. there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body.

45 W ie es geschrieben steht: der erste Mensch, Adam, "ward zu einer lebendigen Seele", und der letzte Adam zum Geist, der da lebendig macht.

Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being (an individual personality); the last Adam (Christ) became a life-giving Spirit.

46 A ber der geistliche Leib ist nicht der erste, sondern der natürliche; darnach der geistliche.

But it is not the spiritual life which came first, but the physical and then the spiritual.

47 D er erste Mensch ist von der Erde und irdisch; der andere Mensch ist der HERR vom Himmel.

The first man from out of earth, made of dust (earthly-minded); the second Man the Lord from out of heaven.

48 W elcherlei der irdische ist, solcherlei sind auch die irdischen; und welcherlei der himmlische ist, solcherlei sind auch die himmlischen.

Now those who are made of the dust are like him who was first made of the dust (earthly-minded); and as is from heaven, so also who are of heaven (heavenly-minded).

49 U nd wie wir getragen haben das Bild des irdischen, also werden wir auch tragen das Bild des himmlischen.

And just as we have borne the image of dust, so shall we and so let us also bear the image of heaven.

50 D as sage ich aber, liebe Brüder, daß Fleisch und Blut nicht können das Reich Gottes ererben; auch wird das Verwesliche nicht erben das Unverwesliche.

But I tell you this, brethren, flesh and blood cannot inherit or share in the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable (that which is decaying) inherit or share in the imperishable (the immortal).

51 S iehe, ich sage euch ein Geheimnis: Wir werden nicht alle entschlafen, wir werden aber alle verwandelt werden;

Take notice! I tell you a mystery (a secret truth, an event decreed by the hidden purpose or counsel of God). We shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed (transformed)

52 u nd dasselbe plötzlich, in einem Augenblick, zur Zeit der letzten Posaune. Denn es wird die Posaune schallen, und die Toten werden auferstehen unverweslich, und wir werden verwandelt werden.

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet call. For a trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable (free and immune from decay), and we shall be changed (transformed).

53 D enn dies Verwesliche muß anziehen die Unverweslichkeit, und dies Sterbliche muß anziehen die Unsterblichkeit.

For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality (freedom from death).

54 W enn aber das Verwesliche wird anziehen die Unverweslichkeit, und dies Sterbliche wird anziehen die Unsterblichkeit, dann wird erfüllt werden das Wort, das geschrieben steht:

And when this perishable puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom from death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed up (utterly vanquished forever) in and unto victory.

55 " Der Tod ist verschlungen in den Sieg. Tod, wo ist dein Stachel? Hölle, wo ist dein Sieg?"

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

56 A ber der Stachel des Todes ist die Sünde; die Kraft aber der Sünde ist das Gesetz.

Now sin is the sting of death, and sin exercises its power through the Law.

57 G ott aber sei Dank, der uns den Sieg gegeben hat durch unsern HERRN Jesus Christus!

But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 D arum, meine lieben Brüder, seid fest, unbeweglich, und nehmet immer zu in dem Werk des HERRN, sintemal ihr wisset, daß eure Arbeit nicht vergeblich ist in dem HERRN.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile.
