1 A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.

2 T he woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

la que concibió y dio a luz un hijo. Al ver que era hermoso, lo tuvo escondido durante tres meses.

3 W hen she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

Pero no pudiendo ocultarlo más tiempo, tomó una canasta, la calafateó con asfalto y brea, colocó en ella al niño y la puso entre los juncos a la orilla del río.

4 H is sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.

Y una hermana suya se puso a lo lejos para ver lo que le acontecería.

5 P haraoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.

La hija del faraón descendió a lavarse al río y, mientras sus doncellas se paseaban por la ribera del río, vio ella la canasta entre los juncos y envió una criada suya para que la tomara.

6 S he opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

Cuando la abrió, vio al niño, que estaba llorando. Llena de compasión por él, exclamó: —Éste es un niño de los hebreos.

7 T hen his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

Entonces la hermana del niño dijo a la hija del faraón: —¿Quieres que te llame a una nodriza de las hebreas para que te críe a este niño?

8 P haraoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The maiden went and called the child’s mother.

—Ve —respondió la hija del faraón. La joven fue y llamó a la madre del niño,

9 P haraoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed it.

a la cual dijo la hija del faraón: —Llévate a este niño y críamelo; yo te lo pagaré. La mujer tomó al niño y lo crió.

10 T he child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Y cuando el niño creció, se lo entregó a la hija del faraón, la cual lo crió como hijo suyo y le puso por nombre Moisés, diciendo: «Porque de las aguas lo saqué.» Moisés huye de Egipto

11 I n those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.

En aquellos días sucedió que, crecido ya Moisés, salió a visitar a sus hermanos. Los vio en sus duras tareas, y observó a un egipcio que golpeaba a uno de sus hermanos hebreos.

12 H e looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

Entonces miró a todas partes, y viendo que no había nadie, mató al egipcio y lo escondió en la arena.

13 H e went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”

Al día siguiente salió, vio a dos hebreos que reñían, y preguntó al que maltrataba al otro: —¿Por qué golpeas a tu prójimo?

14 H e said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”

Él respondió: —¿Quién te ha puesto a ti por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros? ¿Piensas matarme como mataste al egipcio? Entonces Moisés tuvo miedo, y pensó: «Ciertamente esto ha sido descubierto.»

15 N ow when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

Cuando el faraón oyó acerca de este hecho, procuró matar a Moisés; pero Moisés huyó de la presencia del faraón y habitó en la tierra de Madián. Allí se sentó junto a un pozo.

16 N ow the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

El sacerdote de Madián tenía siete hijas, que fueron a sacar agua para llenar las pilas y dar de beber a las ovejas de su padre.

17 T he shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

Pero llegaron los pastores y las echaron de allí; entonces Moisés se levantó, las defendió y dio de beber a sus ovejas.

18 W hen they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”

Cuando ellas volvieron junto a su padre Reuel, éste les preguntó: —¿Por qué habéis venido hoy tan pronto?

19 T hey said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”

—Un varón egipcio nos libró de manos de los pastores; también nos sacó el agua y dio de beber a las ovejas —respondieron ellas.

20 H e said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”

Preguntó entonces Reuel a sus hijas: —¿Dónde está? ¿Por qué habéis dejado marchar a ese hombre? Llamadlo para que coma.

21 M oses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.

Moisés aceptó vivir en casa de aquel hombre; y éste dio a su hija Séfora por mujer a Moisés.

22 S he bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”

Ella le dio a luz un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Gersón, pues dijo: «Forastero soy en tierra ajena.»

23 I n the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

Aconteció que después de muchos días murió el rey de Egipto. Los hijos de Israel, que gemían a causa de la servidumbre, clamaron; y subió a Dios el clamor de ellos desde lo profundo de su servidumbre.

24 G od heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

Dios oyó el gemido de ellos y se acordó de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.

25 G od saw the children of Israel, and God was concerned about them.

Y miró Dios a los hijos de Israel, y conoció su condición.
