1 A brahán ya era viejo, y muy entrado en años; y el Señor había bendecido a Abrahán en todo.

And Abraham old, he hath entered into days, and Jehovah hath blessed Abraham in all;

2 Y Abrahán le dijo a uno de sus criados, el más viejo de todos, y que era el que administraba todo lo que tenía: «Pon ahora tu mano debajo de mi muslo.

and Abraham saith unto his servant, the eldest of his house, who is ruling over all that he hath, `Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh,

3 V oy a hacer que me jures por el Señor, el Dios de los cielos y la tierra, que no tomarás para mujer de mi hijo a ninguna de las hijas de los cananeos, entre los cuales yo habito.

and I cause thee to swear by Jehovah, God of the heavens, and God of the earth, that thou dost not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, in the midst of whom I am dwelling;

4 M ás bien, irás a mi tierra, con mis parientes, y allí tomarás mujer para mi hijo Isaac.»

but unto my land and unto my kindred dost thou go, and hast taken a wife for my son, for Isaac.'

5 E l criado le respondió: «Tal vez la mujer no quiera venir conmigo a esta tierra. ¿Debo entonces llevar a tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste?»

And the servant saith unto him, `It may be the woman is not willing to come after me unto this land; do I at all cause thy son to turn back unto the land from whence thou camest out?'

6 Y Abrahán le dijo: «Ten mucho cuidado de no llevar a mi hijo allá.

And Abraham saith unto him, `Take heed to thyself, lest thou cause my son to turn back thither;

7 E l Señor, el Dios de los cielos, me sacó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mis parientes; él mismo me habló, y con juramento me dijo: “Esta tierra se la daré a tu descendencia”, así que él enviará a su ángel delante de ti, y de allá tomarás una mujer para mi hijo.

Jehovah, God of the heavens, who hath taken me from the house of my father, and from the land of my birth, and who hath spoken to me, and who hath sworn to me, saying, To thy seed I give this land, He doth send His messenger before thee, and thou hast taken a wife for my son from thence;

8 S i la mujer no quiere venir contigo, quedarás libre del juramento que me has hecho. ¡Pero de ninguna manera lleves allá a mi hijo!»

and if the woman be not willing to come after thee, then thou hast been acquitted from this mine oath: only my son thou dost not cause to turn back thither.'

9 E ntonces el criado puso su mano debajo del muslo de Abrahán, su señor, y le hizo un juramento en cuanto a este asunto;

And the servant putteth his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord, and sweareth to him concerning this matter.

10 l uego tomó diez de los camellos de su señor y se puso en camino. Llevaba consigo todos los mejores regalos que tenía su señor. Cuando llegó a la ciudad de Najor, en Mesopotamia,

And the servant taketh ten camels of the camels of his lord and goeth, also of all the goods of his lord in his hand, and he riseth, and goeth unto Aram-Naharaim, unto the city of Nahor;

11 h izo que los camellos se arrodillaran fuera de la ciudad, junto a un pozo de agua. Era la hora de la tarde en que las jóvenes salen por agua.

and he causeth the camels to kneel at the outside of the city, at the well of water, at even-time, at the time of the coming out of the women who draw water.

12 E ntonces dijo: «Señor, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, te ruego que me concedas tener hoy un buen encuentro. Ten misericordia de mi señor Abrahán.

And he saith, `Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, cause to meet, I pray Thee, before me this day -- (and do kindness with my lord Abraham;

13 M írame aquí, junto a la fuente de agua, ahora que las hijas de los hombres de esta ciudad salen por agua.

lo, I am standing by the fountain of water, and daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water;

14 P ermite que la joven a quien le diga: “Por favor, baja tu cántaro para que yo beba”, y que me responda: “Bebe, y también les daré de beber a tus camellos”, sea la joven que tú has elegido para tu siervo Isaac. Así sabré que tú has tenido misericordia de mi señor.»

and it hath been, the young person unto whom I say, Incline, I pray thee, thy pitcher, and I drink, and she hath said, Drink, and I water also thy camels) -- her Thou hast decided for Thy servant, for Isaac; and by it I know that Thou hast done kindness with my lord.'

15 S ucedió que, antes de que él acabara de hablar, apareció Rebeca, que había salido con su cántaro al hombro. Rebeca era hija de Betuel, quien era hijo de Milca, la mujer de Najor, el hermano de Abrahán.

And it cometh to pass, before he hath finished speaking, that lo, Rebekah (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, brother of Abraham) is coming out, and her pitcher on her shoulder,

16 E sta joven era de aspecto muy hermoso, y aún virgen, pues no había conocido varón; ella bajó a la fuente, llenó su cántaro, y se dispuso a volver.

and the young person of very good appearance, a virgin, and a man hath not known her; and she goeth down to the fountain, and filleth her pitcher, and cometh up.

17 P ero el criado corrió hacia ella y le dijo: «Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro.»

And the servant runneth to meet her, and saith, `Let me swallow, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher;'

18 E lla respondió: «Bebe, señor mío.» Y presurosa bajó el cántaro que llevaba, y le dio a beber.

and she saith, `Drink, my lord;' and she hasteth, and letteth down her pitcher upon her hand, and giveth him drink.

19 C uando acabó de darle de beber, dijo: «También sacaré agua para tus camellos, hasta que acaben de beber.»

And she finisheth giving him drink, and saith, `Also for thy camels I draw till they have finished drinking;'

20 Y rápidamente vació su cántaro en el bebedero, y todavía corrió al pozo para sacar agua, y sacó para todos los camellos.

and she hasteth, and emptieth her pitcher into the drinking-trough, and runneth again unto the well to draw, and draweth for all his camels.

21 E l hombre estaba admirado de ella, pero callaba, para saber si el Señor había prosperado su viaje, o no.

And the man, wondering at her, remaineth silent, to know whether Jehovah hath made his way prosperous or not.

22 C uando los camellos acabaron de beber, el hombre le dio a ella un pendiente de oro que pesaba cinco gramos y dos brazaletes que pesaban cien gramos,

And it cometh to pass when the camels have finished drinking, that the man taketh a golden ring (whose weight a bekah), and two bracelets for her hands (whose weight ten of gold),

23 y le dijo: «Dime, por favor, ¿de quién eres hija? ¿Y habrá en la casa de tu padre un lugar donde pasemos la noche?»

and saith, `Whose daughter thou? declare to me, I pray thee, is the house of thy father a place for us to lodge in?'

24 E lla le respondió: «Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milca tuvo de Najor.»

And she saith unto him, `I daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she hath borne to Nahor.'

25 Y añadió: «Además, en nuestra casa hay paja y mucho forraje, y lugar para pasar la noche.»

She saith also unto him, `Both straw and provender abundant with us, also a place to lodge in.'

26 E ntonces el hombre se inclinó y adoró al Señor.

And the man boweth, and doth obeisance to Jehovah,

27 D ijo: «Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abrahán, que no le negó a mi amo su misericordia y su verdad, pues me puso el Señor en el camino a la casa de los hermanos de mi amo.»

and saith, `Blessed Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, who hath not left off His kindness and His truth with my lord; -- I in the way, Jehovah hath led me to the house of my lord's brethren.'

28 R ebeca corrió a la casa de su madre, y contó allí estas cosas.

And the young person runneth, and declareth to the house of her mother according to these words.

29 E lla tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán, y Labán salió corriendo a ver al hombre, que estaba junto a la fuente.

And Rebekah hath a brother, and his name Laban, and Laban runneth unto the man who without, unto the fountain;

30 Y es que vio el pendiente y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, cuando dijo: «Así me habló aquel hombre.» Labán salió a ver a ese hombre, y lo encontró junto a la fuente, con los camellos.

yea, it cometh to pass, when he seeth the ring, and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heareth the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, `Thus hath the man spoken unto me,' that he cometh in unto the man, and lo, he is standing by the camels by the fountain.

31 E ntonces le dijo: «Bendito del Señor, ¿por qué te quedas afuera? Ven que ya he preparado la casa, y lugar para los camellos.»

And he saith, `Come in, O blessed one of Jehovah, why standest thou without, and I -- I have prepared the house and place for the camels!'

32 E l hombre fue a la casa, y Labán desató los camellos y les dio paja y forraje. Al hombre y a quienes lo acompañaban les dio agua para que se lavaran los pies,

And he bringeth in the man into the house, and looseth the camels, and giveth straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who with him:

33 y le sirvieron de comer. Pero él dijo: «No comeré hasta que haya dicho lo que tengo que decir.» Y Labán le dijo: «Habla.»

and setteth before him to eat; but he saith, `I do not eat till I have spoken my word;' and he saith, `Speak.'

34 E l hombre dijo: «Yo soy criado de Abrahán.

And he saith, `I Abraham's servant;

35 Y el Señor ha bendecido mucho a mi amo, y lo ha engrandecido; le ha dado ovejas, vacas, plata, oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos.

and Jehovah hath blessed my lord exceedingly, and he is great; and He giveth to him flock, and herd, and silver, and gold, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses;

36 S ara, la mujer de mi amo, tuvo en su vejez un hijo de mi señor, y mi señor le ha dado a su hijo todo cuanto tiene.

and Sarah, my lord's wife, beareth a son to my lord, after she hath been aged, and he giveth to him all that he hath.

37 Y mi amo me puso bajo juramento. Me dijo: “No tomes como mujer para mi hijo a ninguna de las hijas de los cananeos, en cuya tierra habito;

`And my lord causeth me to swear, saying, Thou dost not take a wife to my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, in whose land I am dwelling.

38 m ás bien, irás a la casa de mi padre, con mis parientes, y allí tomarás mujer para mi hijo.”

If not -- unto the house of my father thou dost go, and unto my family, and thou hast taken a wife for my son.

39 Y o le dije: “Tal vez la mujer no querrá seguirme.”

`And I say unto my lord, It may be the woman doth not come after me;

40 E ntonces él me respondió: “Yo he andado siempre en presencia del Señor, así que él enviará su ángel para que vaya contigo y prospere tu camino. Y tú tomarás para mi hijo una mujer de mi familia y de la casa de mi padre.

and he saith unto me, Jehovah, before whom I have walked habitually, doth send His messenger with thee, and hath prospered thy way, and thou hast taken a wife for my son from my family, and from the house of my father;

41 A sí quedarás libre de mi juramento. Si vas con mi familia, y ellos no te dan a la joven, entonces quedarás libre de mi juramento.”

then art thou acquitted from my oath, when thou comest unto my family, and if they give not to thee; then thou hast been acquitted from my oath.

42 H oy, al llegar a la fuente, dije: “Señor, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, si tú quieres, prospera el camino por el cual ando.

`And I come to-day unto the fountain, and I say, Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, if Thou art, I pray Thee, making prosperous my way in which I am going --

43 A quí estoy ahora, junto a la fuente de agua. Permite que la joven que salga por agua, y a la que yo le diga: ‘Por favor, dame de beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro’,

(lo, I am standing by the fountain of water), then the virgin who is coming out to draw, and I have said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher,

44 y que me responda: ‘Bebe, y sacaré también agua para tus camellos’, que sea ésta la mujer elegida por ti, el Señor, para el hijo de mi señor.”

and she hath said unto me, Both drink thou, and also for thy camels I draw -- she is the woman whom Jehovah hath decided for my lord's son.

45 A ntes de que yo terminara de hablar en mi corazón, vi que Rebeca salía con su cántaro al hombro, y que bajaba a la fuente y sacaba agua. Entonces le dije: “Te ruego que me des de beber.”

`Before I finish speaking unto my heart, then lo, Rebekah is coming out, and her pitcher on her shoulder, and she goeth down to the fountain, and draweth; and I say unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee,

46 E nseguida ella bajó su cántaro, y me dijo: “Bebe, y también les daré de beber a tus camellos.” Y yo bebí, y también a mis camellos les dio de beber.

and she hasteth and letteth down her pitcher from off her and saith, Drink, and thy camels also I water; and I drink, and the camels also she hath watered.

47 E ntonces le pregunté: “¿De quién eres hija?” Y ella me respondió: “Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Najor tuvo con Milca.” Y le puse un pendiente en la nariz, y brazaletes en los brazos;

`And I ask her, and say, Whose daughter thou? and she saith, Daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah hath borne to him, and I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands,

48 l uego me incliné y adoré al Señor. Bendije al Señor, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, por haberme guiado por el camino de verdad para tomar para su hijo la hija del hermano de mi señor.

and I bow, and do obeisance before Jehovah, and I bless Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, who hath led me in the true way to receive the daughter of my lord's brother for his son.

49 Y ahora, si ustedes van a tratar a mi señor con misericordia y verdad, díganmelo; y si no, díganmelo también; así sabré a qué atenerme.»

`And now, if ye are dealing kindly and truly with my lord, declare to me; and if not, declare to me; and I turn unto the right or unto the left.'

50 L abán y Betuel le respondieron así: «Esto viene del Señor, y no podemos decirte ni bueno ni malo.

And Laban answereth -- Bethuel also -- and they say, `The thing hath gone out from Jehovah; we are not able to speak unto thee bad or good;

51 A quí tienes a Rebeca; tómala y vete, y que sea la mujer del hijo de tu señor, tal y como lo ha dicho el Señor.»

lo, Rebekah before thee, take and go, and she is a wife to thy lord's son, as Jehovah hath spoken.'

52 C uando el criado de Abrahán les oyó decir estas palabras, se inclinó hasta el suelo delante del Señor;

And it cometh to pass, when the servant of Abraham hath heard their words, that he boweth himself towards the earth before Jehovah;

53 l uego sacó el criado alhajas de oro y plata, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También a su hermano y a su madre les dio cosas preciosas.

and the servant taketh out vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and giveth to Rebekah; precious things also he hath given to her brother and to her mother.

54 L uego él y los varones que venían con él comieron y bebieron, y allí pasaron la noche. Al día siguiente se levantaron, y el criado dijo: «Envíenme a mi señor.»

And they eat and drink, he and the men who with him, and lodge all night; and they rise in the morning, and he saith, `Send me to my lord;'

55 P ero su hermano y su madre respondieron: «Que se quede la joven con nosotros por lo menos unos diez días, y después de eso partirá.»

and her brother saith -- her mother also -- `Let the young person abide with us a week or ten days, afterwards doth she go.'

56 P ero él les dijo: «Ya que el Señor ha prosperado mi camino, no me detengan más. Despídanme, y entonces volveré a mi señor.»

And he saith unto them, `Do not delay me, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my way; send me away, and I go to my lord;'

57 E ntonces ellos respondieron: «Llamemos a la joven, y preguntémosle a ella.»

and they say, `Let us call for the young person, and ask at her mouth;'

58 Y llamaron a Rebeca, y le dijeron: «¿Quieres irte con este varón?» Y ella respondió: «Sí, quiero irme con él.»

and they call for Rebekah, and say unto her, `Dost thou go with this man?' and she saith, `I go.'

59 Y así, dejaron ir a su hermana Rebeca y a su nodriza, y también al criado de Abrahán y a sus hombres.

And they send away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men;

60 A Rebeca la bendijeron así: «Hermana nuestra, que seas la madre de miles y miles, y que tus descendientes conquisten las ciudades de sus enemigos.»

and they bless Rebekah, and say to her, `Thou our sister; become thou thousands of myriads, and thy seed doth possess the gate of those hating it.'

61 R ebeca se levantó entonces, junto con sus doncellas, y montando en los camellos siguieron al criado, el cual tomó a Rebeca y se fue.

And Rebekah and her young women arise, and ride on the camels, and go after the man; and the servant taketh Rebekah and goeth.

62 I saac, que vivía en el Néguev, regresaba del pozo llamado «El que vive y me ve».

And Isaac hath come in from the entrance of the Well of the Living One, my Beholder; and he is dwelling in the land of the south,

63 E ra la hora de la tarde, e Isaac había salido al campo, para meditar. Pero al levantar los ojos, vio que se acercaban los camellos.

and Isaac goeth out to meditate in the field, at the turning of the evening, and he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, camels are coming.

64 T ambién Rebeca levantó los ojos, y vio a Isaac. Entonces se bajó del camello,

And Rebekah lifteth up her eyes, and seeth Isaac, and alighteth from off the camel;

65 y le preguntó al criado: «¿Quién es este varón que anda por el campo y viene a nuestro encuentro?» Y el criado le respondió: «Es mi señor.» Entonces ella tomó el velo y se cubrió,

and she saith unto the servant, `Who this man who is walking in the field to meet us?' and the servant saith, `It my lord;' and she taketh the veil, and covereth herself.

66 y el criado le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho.

And the servant recounteth to Isaac all the things that he hath done,

67 I saac tomó entonces a Rebeca por mujer, y la llevó a la tienda de Sara, su madre, y la amó. Así se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre.

and Isaac bringeth her in unto the tent of Sarah his mother, and he taketh Rebekah, and she becometh his wife, and he loveth her, and Isaac is comforted after his mother.
