1 É stos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron con Jacob en Egipto. Cada uno de ellos entró con su familia:

And these the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;

2 R ubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 I sacar, Zabulón, Benjamín,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 D an, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 T odos los hijos que le nacieron a Jacob fueron setenta. José ya estaba en Egipto.

And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.

6 Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos y toda aquella generación,

And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;

7 y los hijos de Israel se reprodujeron y se multiplicaron, y aumentaron bastante en número y en fuerza, y el país se saturó de ellos.

and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.

8 M ientras tanto, en Egipto surgió un nuevo rey que no había conocido a José, y le dijo a su pueblo:

And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,

9 « Como pueden ver, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

and he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel more numerous and mighty than we;

10 A sí que debemos tratarlos con mucha sabiduría para que no sigan multiplicándose. Puede suceder que, en caso de guerra, ellos también se alíen con nuestros enemigos y peleen contra nosotros, y se vayan del país.»

give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'

11 E ntonces los egipcios pusieron sobre los israelitas a comisarios de tributos para que los afligieran con sus trabajos. Así los israelitas construyeron para el faraón Pitón y Ramesés, que eran ciudades de almacenaje.

And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;

12 P ero mientras más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban y crecían, de modo que los egipcios sentían temor de los hijos de Israel.

and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;

13 P or eso los egipcios sometieron a los hijos de Israel a una cruel servidumbre.

and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,

14 L es amargaron la vida y sin piedad los obligaron a hacer barro y ladrillos, y todas las labores del campo y toda clase de trabajos pesados.

and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every of service in the field; all their service in which they have served with rigour.

15 A demás, el rey de Egipto habló con Sifra y Fúa, que eran las parteras de las hebreas, y les dijo:

And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),

16 « Cuando ustedes ayuden a las hebreas en sus partos, fíjense en el sexo. Si es niño, mátenlo; si es niña, déjenla vivir.»

and saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

17 P ero las parteras temieron a Dios, y no hicieron lo que el rey de Egipto les mandó, sino que les salvaron la vida a los niños.

And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;

18 E ntonces el rey de Egipto mandó a llamar a las parteras, y les dijo: «¿Por qué han hecho esto de salvarles la vida a los niños?»

and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'

19 Y las parteras le respondieron: «Es que las hebreas no son como las egipcias. Son mujeres robustas, y dan a luz antes de que la partera llegue a ayudarlas.»

And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women not as the Egyptian women, for they lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!'

20 Y Dios trató bien a las parteras, y el pueblo llegó a ser cada vez más numeroso y más fuerte.

And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;

21 Y como las parteras tuvieron temor de Dios, él hizo que sus familias prosperaran.

and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;

22 P ero el faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo: «Echen al río a todos los niños que nazcan, pero dejen con vida a todas las niñas.»

and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
