1 D espués de la muerte de Saúl y Jonatán, David fue a consultar al Señor y le preguntó: «¿Debo ir a alguna de las ciudades de Judá?» Y el Señor le dijo que sí, pero David volvió a preguntarle: «¿Y a qué ciudad debo ir?» Y el Señor le dijo: «Ve a Hebrón.»

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that David asketh at Jehovah, saying, `Do I go up into one of the cities of Judah?' and Jehovah saith unto him, `Go up.' And David saith, `Whither do I go up?' and He saith, `To Hebron.'

2 D avid se dio prisa y fue allá, y se llevó consigo a sus dos mujeres, Ajinoán la jezreelita, y Abigaíl, la viuda de Nabal, el de Carmel.

And David goeth up thither, and also his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite;

3 T ambién fueron con él los soldados que siempre lo habían acompañado, y junto con sus familias se quedaron a vivir en las ciudades de Hebrón.

and his men who with him hath David brought up -- a man and his household -- and they dwell in the cities of Hebron.

4 F ue allí donde los jefes de Judá se reunieron para consagrar a David como rey sobre la tribu de Judá. Cuando David se enteró de que los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad habían sepultado a Saúl,

And the men of Judah come, and anoint there David for king over the house of Judah; and they declare to David, saying, `The men of Jabesh-Gilead they who buried Saul.'

5 l es envió el siguiente mensaje: «Que el Señor los bendiga por haber tratado con misericordia a Saúl, su señor, dándole sepultura.

And David sendeth messengers unto the men of Jabesh-Gilead, and saith unto them, `Blessed ye of Jehovah, in that ye have done this kindness with your lord, with Saul, that ye bury him.

6 Q ue el Señor los trate con la misma misericordia y lealtad, y yo mismo me comprometo a tratarlos así por lo que han hecho.

`And, now, Jehovah doth with you kindness and truth, and also, I do with you this good because ye have done this thing;

7 Y ahora que ha muerto Saúl, su señor, esfuércense y cobren ánimo, pues los de la tribu de Judá han resuelto consagrarme como su rey.» Guerra entre David y la familia de Saúl

and now, are your hands strong, and be ye for sons of valour, for your lord Saul. dead, and also -- me have the house of Judah anointed for king over them.'

8 P ero Abner hijo de Ner, que había sido general del ejército de Saúl, tomó a Isboset hijo de Saúl, y lo llevó a Majanayin

And Abner, son of Ner, head of the host which Saul hath, hath taken Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, and causeth him to pass over to Mahanaim,

9 y allí lo nombró rey de Galaad, de Gesuri, de Jezrel, de Efraín, de Benjamín y de todo Israel.

and causeth him to reign over Gilead, and over the Ashurite, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over Israel -- all of it.

10 I sboset hijo de Saúl tenía cuarenta años cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, y reinó dos años. Los únicos que siguieron a David fueron los de la tribu de Judá.

A son of forty years, Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, in his reigning over Israel, and two years he hath reigned, only the house of Judah have been after David.

11 Y David reinó en Hebrón sobre la tribu de Judá siete años y seis meses.

And the number of the days that David hath been king in Hebron, over the house of Judah, is seven years and six months.

12 A bner salió de Majanayin hacia Gabaón, al frente de los siervos de Isboset hijo de Saúl.

And Abner son of Ner goeth out, and servants of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

13 J oab hijo de Seruyá y los siervos de David salieron y se encontraron con los hombres de Abner junto al estanque de Gabaón. Allí se detuvieron, los unos a un lado del estanque, y los otros al otro lado,

And Joab son of Zeruiah, and servants of David, have gone out, and they meet by the pool of Gibeon together, and sit down, these by the pool on this, and these by the pool on that.

14 y Abner le dijo a Joab: «Que se preparen tus jóvenes y vengan a luchar contra nosotros.» Joab les ordenó que se prepararan,

And Abner saith unto Joab, `Let the youths rise, I pray thee, and they play before us;' and Joab saith, `Let them rise.'

15 y ambos grupos se aprestaron para la lucha. Por parte de Isboset eran doce hombres de Benjamín, y por parte de David también doce,

And they rise and pass over, in number twelve of Benjamin, even of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

16 y cada uno de ellos agarró a su adversario por la cabeza, le encajó la espada en el costado, y todos cayeron muertos al mismo tiempo. Por eso, a ese lugar se le llamó Jelcat Hasurín, y está en Gabaón.

And they lay hold, each on the head of his companion, and his sword in the side of his companion, and they fall together, and calleth that place Helkath-Hazzurim, which in Gibeon,

17 E se día la batalla fue muy reñida, y Abner y los israelitas fueron vencidos por los soldados de David.

and the battle is very hard on that day, and Abner is smitten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18 E ntre los soldados de David estaban Joab, Abisay y Asael, hijos de Seruyá. Asael era tan veloz que, cuando corría, parecía una gacela en el campo.

And there are there three sons of Zeruiah, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel, and Asahel light on his feet, as one of the roes which in the field,

19 Y Asael persiguió a Abner sin darle un momento de respiro,

And Asahel pursueth after Abner, and hath not turned aside to go to the right or to the left, from after Abner.

20 p ero Abner se volvió a verlo y le dijo: «Tú eres Asael, ¿verdad?» Y Asael le respondió: «Así es. Yo soy Asael.»

And Abner looketh behind him, and saith, `Art thou he -- Asahel?' and he saith, `I.'

21 E ntonces Abner le dijo: «Hazte a un lado, hacia donde tú quieras; toma a uno de mis hombres y quédate con sus despojos.» Pero Asael no le hizo caso, sino que siguió persiguiéndolo.

And Abner saith to him, `Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and seize for thee one of the youths, and take to thee his armour;' and Asahel hath not been willing to turn aside from after him.

22 Y Abner volvió a decirle: «Deja de perseguirme. No quiero matarte. ¿Con qué cara podría yo presentarme ante tu hermano Joab?»

And Abner addeth again, saying unto Asahel, `Turn thee aside from after me, why do I smite thee to the earth? and how do I lift up my face unto Joab thy brother?'

23 P ero como Asael no dejaba de perseguirlo, Abner tomó su lanza y le clavó el revés a la altura de la quinta costilla; la lanza le salió por la espalda, y allí mismo cayó muerto. Todos lo que pasaban por allí y veían a Asael tendido, se detenían a mirarlo.

And he refuseth to turn aside, and Abner smiteth him with the hinder part of the spear unto the fifth, and the spear cometh out from behind him, and he falleth there, and dieth under it; and it cometh to pass, every one who hath come unto the place where Asahel hath fallen and dieth -- they stand still.

24 J oab y Abisay siguieron persiguiendo a Abner, y para cuando el sol se puso ya habían llegado a la colina de Amma, que está delante de Guiaj, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.

And Joab and Abishai pursue after Abner, and the sun hath gone in, and they have come in unto the height of Ammah, which on the front of Giah, the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

25 E ntonces se reunieron los benjaminitas para perseguir a Abner; formaron un solo ejército, y se detuvieron en la parte alta de la colina.

And the sons of Benjamin gather themselves together after Abner, and become one troop, and stand on the top of a certain height,

26 A llí Abner gritó a voz en cuello, y le dijo a Joab: «¿Vamos a estar siempre en guerra? Si seguimos así, el final de todos nosotros será muy amargo. ¿Cuándo vas a decirle a tu gente que deje de perseguir a sus propios hermanos?»

and Abner calleth unto Joab, and saith, `For ever doth the sword consume? hast thou not known that it is bitterness in the latter end? and till when dost thou not say to the people to turn back from after their brethren?'

27 Y Joab le respondió: «Te juro por Dios que, si no hubieras hablado como ahora lo has hecho, mi gente habría perseguido a sus hermanos hasta el amanecer.»

And Joab saith, `God liveth! for unless thou hadst spoken, surely then from the morning had the people gone up each from after his brother.'

28 Y enseguida Joab mandó tocar la trompeta, y su gente se detuvo y dejó de perseguir a los israelitas. Allí terminó la lucha.

And Joab bloweth with a trumpet, and all the people stand still, and pursue no more after Israel, nor have they added any more to fight.

29 E ntonces Abner y sus hombres caminaron por el Arabá toda aquella noche, pasaron el Jordán y cruzaron por Bitrón hasta llegar a Majanayin.

And Abner and his men have gone through the plain all that night, and pass over the Jordan, and go on all Bithron, and come in to Mahanaim.

30 J oab dejó entonces de perseguir a Abner, y al contar a su ejército, resultó que faltaban Asael y diecinueve soldados de David.

And Joab hath turned back from after Abner, and gathereth all the people, and there are lacking of the servants of David nineteen men, and Asahel;

31 P or el contrario, los soldados de David habían matado a trescientos sesenta soldados benjaminitas de Abner.

and the servants of David have smitten of Benjamin, even among the men of Abner, three hundred and sixty men -- they died.

32 T omaron el cuerpo de Asael y lo pusieron en el sepulcro de su padre, en Belén. Luego, Joab y sus hombres caminaron toda esa noche, y les amaneció en Hebrón.

And they lift up Asahel, and bury him in the burying-place of his father, which in Beth-Lehem, and they go all the night -- Joab and his men -- and it is light to them in Hebron.
