1 A vraam era acum bătrân, înaintat în vârstă, iar Domnul îl binecuvântase în toate lucrurile.

And Abraham old, he hath entered into days, and Jehovah hath blessed Abraham in all;

2 E l i-a zis celui mai bătrân dintre sclavii din gospodăria sa, cel care îngrijea de tot ceea ce avea el: – Pune-ţi mâna sub coapsa mea

and Abraham saith unto his servant, the eldest of his house, who is ruling over all that he hath, `Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh,

3 ş i jură-mi pe Domnul, Dumnezeul cerului şi al pământului, că nu vei lua o soţie pentru fiul meu dintre fiicele canaaniţilor, în mijlocul cărora locuiesc,

and I cause thee to swear by Jehovah, God of the heavens, and God of the earth, that thou dost not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, in the midst of whom I am dwelling;

4 c i că te vei duce în ţara mea, la rudele mele, şi de acolo vei lua o soţie pentru fiul meu Isaac.

but unto my land and unto my kindred dost thou go, and hast taken a wife for my son, for Isaac.'

5 – Poate femeia nu va vrea să vină cu mine în această ţară, a răspuns sclavul; trebuie atunci să-l duc pe fiul tău în ţara din care ai venit?

And the servant saith unto him, `It may be the woman is not willing to come after me unto this land; do I at all cause thy son to turn back unto the land from whence thou camest out?'

6 – Să nu cumva să-l duci pe fiul meu acolo, i-a spus Avraam.

And Abraham saith unto him, `Take heed to thyself, lest thou cause my son to turn back thither;

7 D omnul, Dumnezeul cerului, Cel Care m-a scos din casa tatălui meu şi din patria mea, Care mi-a vorbit şi mi-a jurat spunând: „Seminţei tale îi voi da această ţară!“, îl va trimite pe Îngerul Său înaintea ta, iar tu vei lua de acolo o soţie pentru fiul meu.

Jehovah, God of the heavens, who hath taken me from the house of my father, and from the land of my birth, and who hath spoken to me, and who hath sworn to me, saying, To thy seed I give this land, He doth send His messenger before thee, and thou hast taken a wife for my son from thence;

8 D ar dacă femeia nu va dori să te urmeze, vei fi dezlegat de acest jurământ al meu; numai să nu-l duci pe fiul meu acolo.

and if the woman be not willing to come after thee, then thou hast been acquitted from this mine oath: only my son thou dost not cause to turn back thither.'

9 S clavul şi-a pus mâna sub coapsa stăpânului său, Avraam, şi i-a jurat în legătură cu acest lucru.

And the servant putteth his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord, and sweareth to him concerning this matter.

10 E l a luat zece dintre cămilele stăpânului său şi tot felul de daruri alese şi a plecat fără întârziere spre Aram-Naharayim, spre cetatea lui Nahor.

And the servant taketh ten camels of the camels of his lord and goeth, also of all the goods of his lord in his hand, and he riseth, and goeth unto Aram-Naharaim, unto the city of Nahor;

11 A lăsat cămilele să se aşeze în afara cetăţii, lângă izvorul de apă – era spre seară, la ceasul când femeile veneau să scoată apă –

and he causeth the camels to kneel at the outside of the city, at the well of water, at even-time, at the time of the coming out of the women who draw water.

12 a poi s-a rugat: „ Doamne, Dumnezeul stăpânului meu Avraam, Te rog, împlineşte-mi astăzi dorinţa şi arată-Ţi îndurarea faţă de stăpânul meu, Avraam.

And he saith, `Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, cause to meet, I pray Thee, before me this day -- (and do kindness with my lord Abraham;

13 A cum stau lângă acest izvor de apă, iar fiicele oamenilor din cetate vor veni să scoată apă.

lo, I am standing by the fountain of water, and daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water;

14 F ie ca fata căreia îi voi spune: «Te rog, dă-mi vasul tău ca să beau» şi care îmi va răspunde: «Bea! şi-ţi voi adăpa şi cămilele», aceea să fie fata pe care ai ales-o pentru slujitorul Tău Isaac. Prin aceasta voi cunoaşte că Ţi-ai arătat îndurarea faţă de stăpânul meu.“

and it hath been, the young person unto whom I say, Incline, I pray thee, thy pitcher, and I drink, and she hath said, Drink, and I water also thy camels) -- her Thou hast decided for Thy servant, for Isaac; and by it I know that Thou hast done kindness with my lord.'

15 Î nainte ca el să-şi fi terminat rugăciunea, a ieşit cu vasul pe umăr Rebeca; ea era fiica lui Betuel, fiul Milcăi, soţia lui Nahor, fratele lui Avraam.

And it cometh to pass, before he hath finished speaking, that lo, Rebekah (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, brother of Abraham) is coming out, and her pitcher on her shoulder,

16 F ata era foarte frumoasă; era fecioară şi nici un bărbat n-o cunoscuse. Ea a coborât la izvor, şi-a umplut vasul şi apoi s-a întors.

and the young person of very good appearance, a virgin, and a man hath not known her; and she goeth down to the fountain, and filleth her pitcher, and cometh up.

17 S clavul a alergat să o întâlnească şi i-a zis: – Te rog, dă-mi puţină apă din vasul tău.

And the servant runneth to meet her, and saith, `Let me swallow, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher;'

18 – Bea, domnul meu, a răspuns ea. Şi a coborât repede vasul pe mână şi i-a dat să bea.

and she saith, `Drink, my lord;' and she hasteth, and letteth down her pitcher upon her hand, and giveth him drink.

19 D upă ce i-a dat de băut, ea a spus: – Voi scoate apă şi pentru cămilele tale, până vor termina de băut.

And she finisheth giving him drink, and saith, `Also for thy camels I draw till they have finished drinking;'

20 A golit repede vasul în adăpătoare, a alergat din nou la izvor ca să scoată apă şi a scos apă pentru toate cămilele lui.

and she hasteth, and emptieth her pitcher into the drinking-trough, and runneth again unto the well to draw, and draweth for all his camels.

21 B ărbatul o privea fără să spună nimic, pentru ca să cunoască dacă Domnul i-a făcut reuşită călătoria sau nu.

And the man, wondering at her, remaineth silent, to know whether Jehovah hath made his way prosperous or not.

22 D upă ce cămilele au terminat de băut, bărbatul i-a dat fetei un inel de aur, cântărind o jumătate de şechel şi două brăţări de aur, cântărind zece şecheli.

And it cometh to pass when the camels have finished drinking, that the man taketh a golden ring (whose weight a bekah), and two bracelets for her hands (whose weight ten of gold),

23 A poi a întrebat-o: – A cui fiică eşti? Spune-mi, te rog, este loc în locuinţa tatălui tău pentru noi, ca să înnoptăm acolo ?

and saith, `Whose daughter thou? declare to me, I pray thee, is the house of thy father a place for us to lodge in?'

24 – Sunt fiica lui Betuel, fiul Milcăi, pe care aceasta i l-a născut lui Nahor, a răspuns ea.

And she saith unto him, `I daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she hath borne to Nahor.'

25 A vem paie şi hrană din belşug, precum şi loc de înnoptat, a continuat ea.

She saith also unto him, `Both straw and provender abundant with us, also a place to lodge in.'

26 A tunci bărbatul s-a plecat, s-a închinat Domnului

And the man boweth, and doth obeisance to Jehovah,

27 ş i a zis: „Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul stăpânului meu, Avraam, Care nu Şi-a îndepărtat îndurarea şi credincioşia de la stăpânul meu. În ceea ce mă priveşte, Domnul m-a condus pe cale, până la locuinţa rudelor stăpânului meu.“

and saith, `Blessed Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, who hath not left off His kindness and His truth with my lord; -- I in the way, Jehovah hath led me to the house of my lord's brethren.'

28 F ata a alergat şi le-a spus celor din familia mamei ei aceste lucruri.

And the young person runneth, and declareth to the house of her mother according to these words.

29 R ebeca avea un frate pe care-l chema Laban; acesta a alergat la acel bărbat, la izvor.

And Rebekah hath a brother, and his name Laban, and Laban runneth unto the man who without, unto the fountain;

30 D e îndată ce a văzut inelul şi brăţările în mâinile surorii sale şi a auzit-o spunând: „Aşa mi-a vorbit bărbatul acela“, el s-a dus la acel bărbat pe care l-a găsit stând cu cămilele lângă izvor.

yea, it cometh to pass, when he seeth the ring, and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heareth the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, `Thus hath the man spoken unto me,' that he cometh in unto the man, and lo, he is standing by the camels by the fountain.

31 I -a zis: „Vino, binecuvântatul Domnului! De ce stai afară când eu am pregătit locuinţa şi un loc pentru cămile?“

And he saith, `Come in, O blessed one of Jehovah, why standest thou without, and I -- I have prepared the house and place for the camels!'

32 B ărbatul a intrat în casă, iar Laban a cerut să fie descărcate lucrurile de pe cămile şi să li se dea acestora paie şi nutreţ; apoi el i-a dat bărbatului apă, ca să-şi poată spăla picioarele, atât el, cât şi bărbaţii care erau cu el.

And he bringeth in the man into the house, and looseth the camels, and giveth straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who with him:

33 I s-a pus de mâncare, ca să mănânce, dar el a spus: – Nu voi mânca până nu voi spune ce am de spus. – Spune! i-a zis Laban.

and setteth before him to eat; but he saith, `I do not eat till I have spoken my word;' and he saith, `Speak.'

34 – Eu sunt sclavul lui Avraam, a spus el.

And he saith, `I Abraham's servant;

35 D omnul l-a binecuvântat mult pe stăpânul meu, iar el a ajuns un om bogat; i-a dat oi şi vite, aur şi argint, sclavi şi sclave, cămile şi măgari.

and Jehovah hath blessed my lord exceedingly, and he is great; and He giveth to him flock, and herd, and silver, and gold, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses;

36 S ara, soţia stăpânului meu, i-a născut acestuia un fiu la bătrâneţe, iar el i-a dat lui tot ceea ce are.

and Sarah, my lord's wife, beareth a son to my lord, after she hath been aged, and he giveth to him all that he hath.

37 S tăpânul meu m-a pus să jur, zicându-mi: „Să nu iei o soţie pentru fiul meu dintre fiicele canaaniţilor, în a căror ţară locuiesc,

`And my lord causeth me to swear, saying, Thou dost not take a wife to my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, in whose land I am dwelling.

38 c i să te duci la familia tatălui meu, la clanul meu, şi de acolo să iei o soţie pentru fiul meu!“

If not -- unto the house of my father thou dost go, and unto my family, and thou hast taken a wife for my son.

39 E u i-am spus stăpânului meu: „Poate femeia nu mă va urma.“

`And I say unto my lord, It may be the woman doth not come after me;

40 D ar el mi-a răspuns: „ Domnul, înaintea Căruia am umblat, Îşi va trimite Îngerul cu tine şi-ţi va face reuşită călătoria, iar tu vei lua o soţie pentru fiul meu din clanul meu, din familia tatălui meu.

and he saith unto me, Jehovah, before whom I have walked habitually, doth send His messenger with thee, and hath prospered thy way, and thou hast taken a wife for my son from my family, and from the house of my father;

41 D ar dacă vei merge la clanul meu, iar ei nu ţi-o vor da, vei fi dezlegat de jurământul meu.“

then art thou acquitted from my oath, when thou comest unto my family, and if they give not to thee; then thou hast been acquitted from my oath.

42 C ând am venit astăzi la izvor, m-am rugat: „ Doamne, Dumnezeul stăpânului meu, Avraam, de-mi vei fi prielnic în călătoria pe care am făcut-o,

`And I come to-day unto the fountain, and I say, Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, if Thou art, I pray Thee, making prosperous my way in which I am going --

43 i ată, stau lângă acest izvor de apă; fie ca fata care va ieşi să scoată apă, căreia îi voi spune: «Te rog, dă-mi să beau puţină apă din vasul tău»

(lo, I am standing by the fountain of water), then the virgin who is coming out to draw, and I have said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher,

44 ş i care îmi va răspunde: «Bea! şi voi scoate apă şi pentru cămilele tale», aceea să fie soţia pe care Domnul a ales-o pentru fiul stăpânului meu.“

and she hath said unto me, Both drink thou, and also for thy camels I draw -- she is the woman whom Jehovah hath decided for my lord's son.

45 Î nainte ca eu să fi terminat rugăciunea în inima mea, Rebeca a ieşit cu vasul ei pe umăr, s-a coborât la izvor şi a scos apă. Eu i-am zis: „Te rog, dă-mi să beau!“

`Before I finish speaking unto my heart, then lo, Rebekah is coming out, and her pitcher on her shoulder, and she goeth down to the fountain, and draweth; and I say unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee,

46 E a a coborât repede vasul de pe umăr şi mi-a răspuns: „Bea! şi-ţi voi adăpa şi cămilele.“ Eu am băut, iar ea a adăpat şi cămilele.

and she hasteth and letteth down her pitcher from off her and saith, Drink, and thy camels also I water; and I drink, and the camels also she hath watered.

47 D upă aceea am întrebat-o: „A cui fiică eşti?“ Ea mi-a răspuns: „Sunt fiica lui Betuel, fiul lui Nahor, pe care Milca i l-a născut acestuia.“ Eu i-am pus inelul în nas şi brăţările pe mâini.

`And I ask her, and say, Whose daughter thou? and she saith, Daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah hath borne to him, and I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands,

48 A poi m-am plecat, m-am închinat Domnului şi L-am binecuvântat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul stăpânului meu, Avraam, Care m-a condus pe calea cea dreaptă, ca s-o iau pe nepoata fratelui stăpânului meu pentru fiul său.

and I bow, and do obeisance before Jehovah, and I bless Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, who hath led me in the true way to receive the daughter of my lord's brother for his son.

49 A stfel dar, dacă vreţi să arătaţi bunătate şi credincioşie faţă de stăpânul meu, spuneţi-mi; dacă nu, spuneţi-mi, ca să mă pot îndrepta fie la dreapta, fie la stânga.

`And now, if ye are dealing kindly and truly with my lord, declare to me; and if not, declare to me; and I turn unto the right or unto the left.'

50 A tunci Laban şi Betuel au răspuns: – Acest lucru vine de la Domnul; nu-ţi putem spune nici rău, nici bine.

And Laban answereth -- Bethuel also -- and they say, `The thing hath gone out from Jehovah; we are not able to speak unto thee bad or good;

51 I ată, Rebeca este înaintea ta! Ia-o şi du-te! Ea să fie soţia fiului stăpânului tău, aşa cum a spus Domnul.

lo, Rebekah before thee, take and go, and she is a wife to thy lord's son, as Jehovah hath spoken.'

52 C ând sclavul lui Avraam a auzit cuvintele lor, s-a prosternat înaintea Domnului.

And it cometh to pass, when the servant of Abraham hath heard their words, that he boweth himself towards the earth before Jehovah;

53 A poi a scos bijuterii de argint şi de aur, precum şi îmbrăcăminte şi i le-a dat Rebecăi; de asemenea, el le-a dăruit lucruri preţioase şi fratelui, şi mamei ei.

and the servant taketh out vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and giveth to Rebekah; precious things also he hath given to her brother and to her mother.

54 D upă aceea, el şi bărbaţii care erau cu el au mâncat, au băut şi au rămas acolo peste noapte. Când s-au trezit dimineaţa, el le-a spus celor de-ai casei: – Lăsaţi-mă să mă întorc la stăpânul meu.

And they eat and drink, he and the men who with him, and lodge all night; and they rise in the morning, and he saith, `Send me to my lord;'

55 F ratele şi mama fetei i-au răspuns: – Fata să mai rămână cu noi măcar zece zile; după aceea va putea pleca.

and her brother saith -- her mother also -- `Let the young person abide with us a week or ten days, afterwards doth she go.'

56 D ar el le-a zis: – Nu mă opriţi acum, căci Domnul mi-a făcut reuşită călătoria; lăsaţi-mă să plec, ca să mă întorc la stăpânul meu.

And he saith unto them, `Do not delay me, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my way; send me away, and I go to my lord;'

57 – Să chemăm fata şi să o întrebăm, au răspuns ei.

and they say, `Let us call for the young person, and ask at her mouth;'

58 A u chemat-o pe Rebeca şi au întrebat-o: – Vrei să mergi cu acest bărbat? – Da, a răspuns ea.

and they call for Rebekah, and say unto her, `Dost thou go with this man?' and she saith, `I go.'

59 E i au lăsat-o pe sora lor Rebeca, precum şi pe doica ei să plece împreună cu sclavul lui Avraam şi cu oamenii săi.

And they send away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men;

60 E i au binecuvântat-o şi i-au zis: „Sora noastră, fie ca să ajungi mama a mii de mii şi fie ca sămânţa ta să stăpânească cetăţile duşmanilor lor.“

and they bless Rebekah, and say to her, `Thou our sister; become thou thousands of myriads, and thy seed doth possess the gate of those hating it.'

61 A poi Rebeca şi servitoarele ei s-au sculat, au încălecat pe cămile şi au plecat după acel bărbat. Astfel, sclavul a luat-o pe Rebeca şi a plecat.

And Rebekah and her young women arise, and ride on the camels, and go after the man; and the servant taketh Rebekah and goeth.

62 I saac se întorsese de la Beer Lahai-Roi, pentru că locuia în Neghev.

And Isaac hath come in from the entrance of the Well of the Living One, my Beholder; and he is dwelling in the land of the south,

63 E l a ieşit într-o seară pe câmp ca să mediteze şi, ridicându-şi privirea, a văzut venind nişte cămile.

and Isaac goeth out to meditate in the field, at the turning of the evening, and he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, camels are coming.

64 R ebeca şi-a ridicat şi ea privirea, iar când l-a văzut pe Isaac, s-a dat jos de pe cămilă

And Rebekah lifteth up her eyes, and seeth Isaac, and alighteth from off the camel;

65 ş i l-a întrebat pe sclav: – Cine este acel bărbat care vine pe câmp să ne întâlnească? – Este stăpânul meu, a răspuns sclavul. Ea şi-a luat vălul şi s-a acoperit.

and she saith unto the servant, `Who this man who is walking in the field to meet us?' and the servant saith, `It my lord;' and she taketh the veil, and covereth herself.

66 S clavul i-a istorisit lui Isaac toate lucrurile pe care le făcuse.

And the servant recounteth to Isaac all the things that he hath done,

67 A poi Isaac a dus-o pe Rebeca în cortul mamei sale, Sara, şi s-a căsătorit cu ea; ea a devenit soţia lui, iar el a iubit-o. Astfel a fost mângâiat Isaac după moartea mamei sale.

and Isaac bringeth her in unto the tent of Sarah his mother, and he taketh Rebekah, and she becometh his wife, and he loveth her, and Isaac is comforted after his mother.
