1 ¶ Better is the poor that walks in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

Ein Armer, der in seiner Frömmigkeit wandelt, ist besser denn ein Verkehrter mit seinen Lippen, der doch ein Narr ist.

2 ¶ That the soul be without wisdom is not good, and he that hastens with his feet sins.

Wo man nicht mit Vernunft handelt, da geht's nicht wohl zu; und wer schnell ist mit Füßen, der tut sich Schaden.

3 ¶ The foolishness of man perverts his way, and his heart is wroth against the LORD.

Die Torheit eines Menschen verleitet seinen Weg, und doch tobt sein Herz wider den HERRN.

4 ¶ Wealth makes many friends, but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

Gut macht viele Freunde; aber der Arme wird von seinen Freunden verlassen.

5 ¶ A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

Ein falscher Zeuge bleibt nicht ungestraft; und wer Lügen frech redet, wird nicht entrinnen.

6 ¶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince, but every man is a friend to him that gives.

Viele schmeicheln der Person des Fürsten; und alle sind Freunde des, der Geschenke gibt.

7 A ll the brethren of the poor hate him; how much more shall his friends separate themselves from him? He shall seek their friendship and not find it.

Den Armen hassen alle seine Brüder; wie viel mehr halten sich seine Freunde von ihm fern! Und wer sich auf Worte verläßt, dem wird nichts.

8 ¶ He that gets wisdom loves his own soul; he keeps intelligence that he might find that which is good.

Wer klug wird, liebt sein Leben; und der Verständige findet Gutes.

9 ¶ The false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

Ein falscher Zeuge bleibt nicht ungestraft; und wer frech Lügen redet, wird umkommen.

10 ¶ Delight is not suitable for a fool; much less for a slave to have rule over princes.

Dem Narren steht nicht wohl an, gute Tage haben, viel weniger einem Knecht, zu herrschen über Fürsten.

11 ¶ The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Wer geduldig ist, der ist ein kluger Mensch, und ist ihm eine Ehre, daß er Untugend überhören kann.

12 ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

Die Ungnade des Königs ist wie das Brüllen eines jungen Löwen; aber seine Gnade ist wie der Tau auf dem Grase.

13 ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

Ein törichter Sohn ist seines Vaters Herzeleid, und ein zänkisches Weib ein stetiges Triefen.

14 ¶ House and riches are the inheritance from fathers, but the prudent wife is from the LORD.

Haus und Güter vererben die Eltern; aber ein vernünftiges Weib kommt vom HERRN.

15 ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and the negligent soul shall suffer hunger.

Faulheit bringt Schlafen, und eine lässige Seele wird Hunger leiden.

16 ¶ He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul, but he that despises his ways shall die.

Wer das Gebot bewahrt, der bewahrt sein Leben; wer aber seines Weges nicht achtet, wird sterben.

17 ¶ He that gives unto the poor lends unto the LORD, and he will give him his reward.

Wer sich des Armen erbarmt, der leihet dem HERRN; der wird ihm wieder Gutes vergelten.

18 ¶ Chasten thy son while there is hope, but do not stir up thy soul to destroy him.

Züchtige deinen Sohn, solange Hoffnung da ist; aber laß deine Seele nicht bewegt werden, ihn zu töten.

19 ¶ A man of great wrath shall suffer the consequences, for even if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

Großer Grimm muß Schaden leiden; denn willst du ihm steuern, so wird er noch größer.

20 ¶ Hear counsel, and receive chastening that thou may be wise in thy old age.

Gehorche dem Rat, und nimm Zucht an, daß du hernach weise seiest.

21 ¶ There are many thoughts in the heart of man; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD shall stand.

Es sind viel Anschläge in eines Mannes Herzen; aber der Rat des HERRN besteht.

22 ¶ Contentment is unto men to show mercy, but it is better to do it unto the poor than to the liar.

Ein Mensch hat Lust an seiner Wohltat; und ein Armer ist besser denn ein Lügner.

23 ¶ The fear of the LORD is unto life, and he that has it shall live satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

Die Furcht des HERRN fördert zum Leben, und wird satt bleiben, daß kein Übel sie heimsuchen wird.

24 ¶ The slothful man hides his hand in his bosom and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

Der Faule verbirgt seine Hand im Topf und bringt sie nicht wieder zum Munde.

25 ¶ Smite a scorner, and the simple will become prudent, and reproving one that has understanding, he will understand knowledge.

Schlägt man den Spötter, so wird der Unverständige klug; straft man einen Verständigen, so wird er vernünftig.

26 ¶ He that steals from his father and chases away his mother is a son that causes shame and brings reproach.

Wer Vater verstört und Mutter verjagt, der ist ein schändliches und verfluchtes Kind.

27 ¶ Cease, my son, to hear the teaching that induces one to deviate from the reasons of wisdom.

Laß ab, mein Sohn, zu hören die Zucht, und doch abzuirren von vernünftiger Lehre.

28 ¶ A witness of Belial shall scorn judgment, and the mouth of the wicked shall cover iniquity.

Ein loser Zeuge spottet des Rechts, und der Gottlosen Mund verschlingt das Unrecht.

29 ¶ Judgments are prepared for scorners and stripes for the back of fools.

Den Spöttern sind Strafen bereitet, und Schläge auf der Narren Rücken.
