1 L a palabra del Señor vino a mí, Jeremías, y me dijo:

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord saying,

2 « Levántate y ve a la casa del alfarero. Allí te daré un mensaje.»

“Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.”

3 Y o me dirigí a la casa del alfarero, y lo encontré trabajando sobre el torno.

Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel.

4 L a vasija de barro que él hacía se deshizo en su mano, así que él volvió a hacer otra vasija, tal y como él quería hacerla.

But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.

5 E ntonces la palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo:

Then the word of the Lord came to me saying,

6 « Casa de Israel, ¿acaso no puedo yo hacer con ustedes lo mismo que hace este alfarero? Ustedes, casa de Israel, son en mi mano como el barro en la mano del alfarero. —Palabra del Señor.

“Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does ?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.

7 » En cualquier momento puedo decir, de algún pueblo o reino, que lo voy a arrancar, derribar, o destruir.

At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it;

8 P ero si ese pueblo o reino se aparta de su maldad, contra la cual hablé, yo desistiré del daño que había pensado hacerles.

if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it.

9 » En cualquier momento puedo también decir, de algún pueblo o reino, que lo voy a edificar y plantar.

Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it;

10 P ero si ese pueblo o reino hace lo malo ante mis ojos, y no me obedece, yo dejaré de hacerles el bien que había pensado hacerles.

if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it.

11 » Así que ve y habla con todos los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén, y diles de mi parte que yo, el Señor, ya he tomado una decisión, y que ahora me dispongo a castigarlos. Que se aparten ya de su mal camino, y que mejoren su conducta y sus acciones.»

So now then, speak to the men of Judah and against the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold, I am fashioning calamity against you and devising a plan against you. Oh turn back, each of you from his evil way, and reform your ways and your deeds.”’

12 P ero ellos dijeron: «No hay caso. Iremos en pos de nuestros ídolos, y cada uno de nosotros seguirá las intenciones de su malvado corazón.»

But they will say, ‘It’s hopeless! For we are going to follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’

13 P or lo tanto, así ha dicho el Señor: «Pregunten ahora entre las naciones, cuál de ellas ha sabido de algo parecido. ¡Lo que ha hecho la virginal Israel es horrible!

“Therefore thus says the Lord, ‘ Ask now among the nations, Who ever heard the like of this? The virgin of Israel Has done a most appalling thing.

14 ¿ Alguna vez falta la nieve del Líbano sobre las piedras del campo? ¿O llegan a faltar las heladas aguas que bajan de lejanas tierras?

‘Does the snow of Lebanon forsake the rock of the open country? Or is the cold flowing water from a foreign land ever snatched away?

15 E n cambio, mi pueblo me ha olvidado y ha ofrecido incienso a dioses falsos; ha tropezado en sus caminos, en las sendas de siempre, y anda por atajos y no por el camino principal;

‘For My people have forgotten Me, They burn incense to worthless gods And they have stumbled from their ways, From the ancient paths, To walk in bypaths, Not on a highway,

16 h an convertido su país en un terreno desolado, del que todos se burlan; todos los que pasan mueven la cabeza y apenas dan crédito a lo que ven.

To make their land a desolation, An object of perpetual hissing; Everyone who passes by it will be astonished And shake his head.

17 C uando llegue el desastre, les daré la espalda, y como el viento solano los esparciré delante de sus enemigos.» Conspiración del pueblo y oración de Jeremías

‘Like an east wind I will scatter them Before the enemy; I will show them My back and not My face In the day of their calamity.’”

18 E llos dijeron: «Vengan y hagamos planes en contra de Jeremías. Sacerdotes que nos guíen no habrán de faltarnos, ni tampoco sabios que nos aconsejen ni profetas que nos hablen. Vengan, vamos a atacarlo de palabra, y no hagamos caso a lo que dice.»

Then they said, “Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the sage, nor the divine word to the prophet! Come on and let us strike at him with our tongue, and let us give no heed to any of his words.”

19 S eñor, posa tus ojos en mí, y escucha lo que dicen los que contienden conmigo.

Do give heed to me, O Lord, And listen to what my opponents are saying!

20 A cuérdate de que yo intercedí ante ti en favor de ellos, para que tú nos los castigaras. ¿Merezco que me paguen mal por hacerles bien? Sin embargo, ¡me han cavado una tumba!

Should good be repaid with evil? For they have dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before You To speak good on their behalf, So as to turn away Your wrath from them.

21 P or eso, ¡deja que sus hijos se mueran de hambre! ¡Dispérsalos por causa de la guerra! ¡Que se queden viudas sus mujeres, y sin hijos! ¡Que sus maridos sean condenados a muerte, y que sus jóvenes mueran a filo de espada en la guerra!

Therefore, give their children over to famine And deliver them up to the power of the sword; And let their wives become childless and widowed. Let their men also be smitten to death, Their young men struck down by the sword in battle.

22 ¡ Que se oiga clamor en sus casas, cuando de pronto lances contra ellos un ejército! Porque, para atraparme, ellos cavaron un hoyo y me tendieron una trampa.

May an outcry be heard from their houses, When You suddenly bring raiders upon them; For they have dug a pit to capture me And hidden snares for my feet.

23 P ero tú, Señor, conoces todos sus planes para matarme; ¡no los perdones por su maldad, ni borres delante de ti su pecado! En tu enojo, ¡hazlos tropezar en tu presencia!

Yet You, O Lord, know All their deadly designs against me; Do not forgive their iniquity Or blot out their sin from Your sight. But may they be overthrown before You; Deal with them in the time of Your anger!
