1 J oab hijo de Seruyá sabía que el rey sentía un cariño especial por Absalón,

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was inclined toward Absalom.

2 a sí que mandó traer de Tecoa a una mujer muy astuta, y la instruyó: «Vístete de luto y sin maquillaje alguno, y preséntate ante el rey fingiendo llevar ya mucho tiempo de duelo por algún pariente muerto.

So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there and said to her, “Please pretend to be a mourner, and put on mourning garments now, and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be like a woman who has been mourning for the dead many days;

3 U na vez ante el rey, le dirás lo que te voy a decir.» Y Joab le dijo a la mujer lo que ella tenía que repetir,

then go to the king and speak to him in this manner.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.

4 y cuando ella se presentó ante el rey, hizo una reverencia, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo, y dijo: «Su Majestad, ¡vengo a pedir protección!»

Now when the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground and prostrated herself and said, “ Help, O king.”

5 E l rey preguntó: «¿Qué te pasa?» Y ella respondió: «Mi marido ha muerto, y me he quedado viuda.

The king said to her, “What is your trouble?” And she answered, “Truly I am a widow, for my husband is dead.

6 Y o tuve dos hijos, que se pelearon en el campo. Como no había nadie que los separara, uno de ellos hirió de muerte al otro, y lo mató.

Your maidservant had two sons, but the two of them struggled together in the field, and there was no one to separate them, so one struck the other and killed him.

7 A hora, toda la familia se ha puesto en mi contra y me insiste: “Tienes que entregar a ese asesino, pues tiene que pagar con su vida la muerte de su hermano.” Si les hago caso, matarán a mi único heredero y, con eso, habrán apagado la última chispa que me queda, y la memoria de mi marido se perderá por no dejar ningún descendiente.»

Now behold, the whole family has risen against your maidservant, and they say, ‘Hand over the one who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed, and destroy the heir also.’ Thus they will extinguish my coal which is left, so as to leave my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.”

8 E l rey le dijo a la mujer: «Regresa a tu casa, que yo voy a dar instrucciones acerca de ti.»

Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you.”

9 P ero la mujer le respondió: «Rey y señor mío: Si la familia de mi padre y yo hemos hecho mal, que la culpa recaiga sobre nosotros; pero que no se culpe de esto a Su Majestad ni a su reino.»

The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “O my lord, the king, the iniquity is on me and my father’s house, but the king and his throne are guiltless.”

10 Y David le dijo: «Si alguien te culpa de algo, hazlo que comparezca ante mí, y no volverá a molestarte.»

So the king said, “Whoever speaks to you, bring him to me, and he will not touch you anymore.”

11 P ero la mujer añadió: «Ruego a Su Majestad consultar al Señor su Dios, para que quien quiere tomar venganza no empeore las cosas matando a mi hijo.» Y el rey respondió: «Juro por el Señor que tu hijo no va a perder un solo pelo de su cabeza.»

Then she said, “Please let the king remember the Lord your God, so that the avenger of blood will not continue to destroy, otherwise they will destroy my son.” And he said, “ As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”

12 E lla volvió a decir: «Ruego a Su Majestad permitir a esta su humilde sierva decir una sola palabra más.» Y el rey le dijo: «Te escucho.»

Then the woman said, “Please let your maidservant speak a word to my lord the king.” And he said, “Speak.”

13 E ntonces ella dijo: «¿Por qué Su Majestad se propone perjudicar al pueblo de Dios? Con lo que Su Majestad ha dicho, Su Majestad misma se condena, pues no permite volver a su hijo desterrado.

The woman said, “ Why then have you planned such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring back his banished one.

14 T odos tenemos que morir. Somos como el agua cuando se derrama en el suelo, que ya no se puede recoger. Pero Dios, lejos de quitarnos la vida, pone los medios para que nos volvamos a él, si nos hemos alejado.

For we will surely die and are like water spilled on the ground which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away life, but plans ways so that the banished one will not be cast out from him.

15 Y o he venido a hablar con Su Majestad porque tengo miedo del pueblo. Por eso me dije: “Voy a hablar con el rey. Tal vez se digne escucharme.

Now the reason I have come to speak this word to my lord the king is that the people have made me afraid; so your maidservant said, ‘Let me now speak to the king, perhaps the king will perform the request of his maidservant.

16 S i me hace caso, me librará de los que quieren destruirnos a mi hijo y a mí, y quitarnos lo que Dios mismo nos ha dado.”

For the king will hear and deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man who would destroy both me and my son from the inheritance of God.’

17 Y esta sierva de Su Majestad ahora espera una respuesta consoladora, pues Su Majestad es como un ángel de Dios, y puede discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo. ¡Que nuestro Señor y Dios sea siempre con Su Majestad!»

Then your maidservant said, ‘Please let the word of my lord the king be comforting, for as the angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and evil. And may the Lord your God be with you.’”

18 E ntonces David le dijo a la mujer: «Voy a preguntarte algo, pero quiero que me digas toda la verdad.» Ella contestó: «Diga Su Majestad.»

Then the king answered and said to the woman, “Please do not hide anything from me that I am about to ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king please speak.”

19 Y el rey le dijo: «¿No es verdad que detrás de todo esto anda la mano de Joab?» Y ella respondió: «Puedo jurar a Su Majestad, a quien de ningún modo se puede engañar, que fue su siervo Joab quien me habló y me ordenó decir cada palabra que yo he dicho.

So the king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” And the woman replied, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken. Indeed, it was your servant Joab who commanded me, and it was he who put all these words in the mouth of your maidservant;

20 P ero lo hizo con la intención de que las cosas cambien. Sin embargo, Su Majestad posee la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, y sabe todo lo que pasa en su país.»

in order to change the appearance of things your servant Joab has done this thing. But my lord is wise, like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know all that is in the earth.” Absalom Is Recalled

21 E ntonces el rey le dijo a Joab: «Fíjate bien en esto que he decidido hacer: Ve y haz volver al joven Absalón.»

Then the king said to Joab, “Behold now, I will surely do this thing; go therefore, bring back the young man Absalom.”

22 J oab inclinó su rostro ante el rey con reverencia, hasta tocar el suelo, y bendijo al rey diciendo: «Hoy he comprobado que Su Majestad es muy bondadoso con este siervo suyo, pues ha atendido a lo que su siervo sugirió.»

Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrated himself and blessed the king; then Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, O my lord, the king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant.”

23 Y Joab se levantó enseguida y se fue a Gesur para traer a Absalón de regreso a Jerusalén,

So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

24 a unque el rey ordenó: «Que se vaya a su casa y no se presente ante mí.» Y Absalón se fue a su casa sin presentarse ante el rey.

However the king said, “Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face.” So Absalom turned to his own house and did not see the king’s face.

25 N o había en todo Israel nadie tan bien parecido como Absalón. Su hermosura era perfecta de pies a cabeza.

Now in all Israel was no one as handsome as Absalom, so highly praised; from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no defect in him.

26 C ada año, cuando se mandaba cortar el cabello (pues era tan abundante que le molestaba), el cabello cortado llegaba a pesar más de dos kilos, según el peso oficial.

When he cut the hair of his head (and it was at the end of every year that he cut it, for it was heavy on him so he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at 200 shekels by the king’s weight.

27 A bsalón tuvo dos hijos varones y una hija muy hermosa, llamada Tamar.

To Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter whose name was Tamar; she was a woman of beautiful appearance.

28 D urante los dos años que estuvo en Jerusalén, no se le permitió ver al rey;

Now Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king’s face.

29 p ero como Absalón quería verlo, le envió mensajes a Joab para que intercediera por él, pero Joab se negó a verlo hasta en dos ocasiones.

Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. So he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

30 E ntonces Absalón ordenó a sus sirvientes: «Como saben, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y en él ha sembrado cebada. ¡Vayan y préndanle fuego!» Sus sirvientes le prendieron fuego al campo de Joab,

Therefore he said to his servants, “See, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire.” So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.

31 y cuando Joab lo supo, fue a la casa de Absalón y le reclamó: «¿Por qué mandaste a tus sirvientes a que le prendieran fuego a mi campo?»

Then Joab arose, came to Absalom at his house and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”

32 Y Absalón le respondió: «Te he mandado a llamar, para que vayas a ver al rey y le preguntes para qué me hizo venir de Gesur. ¡Sería mejor que me hubiera quedado allá! Yo quiero ver al rey. Y si he cometido algún pecado, ¡que me mate!»

Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent for you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me still to be there.”’ Now therefore, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him put me to death.”

33 J oab se presentó ante el rey y le comunicó el sentir de Absalón; entonces el rey mando llamar a Absalón, y cuando éste se presentó ante el rey, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo. Por su parte, el rey besó a Absalón.

So when Joab came to the king and told him, he called for Absalom. Thus he came to the king and prostrated himself on his face to the ground before the king, and the king kissed Absalom.
