1 D espués de estos sucesos, la palabra del Señor vino a Abrán en una visión. Le dijo: «No temas, Abrán. Yo soy tu escudo, y tu galardón será muy grande.»

After these things, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram, I am your Shield, your abundant compensation, and your reward shall be exceedingly great.

2 A brán respondió: «Mi Señor y Dios, ¿qué puedes darme, si no tengo hijos, y el mayordomo de mi casa es ese damasceno Eliezer?»

And Abram said, Lord God, what can You give me, since I am going on childless and he who shall be the owner and heir of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

3 T ambién dijo Abrán: «Mira que no me has dado descendencia. Mi heredero será un esclavo nacido en mi casa.»

And Abram continued, Look, You have given me no child; and born in my house is my heir.

4 P ero vino a él palabra del Señor, y le dijo: «Tu heredero no será éste, sino tu propio hijo.»

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, This man shall not be your heir, but he who shall come from your own body shall be your heir.

5 E ntonces lo llevó afuera, y allí le dijo: «Fíjate ahora en los cielos, y cuenta las estrellas, si es que las puedes contar. ¡Así será tu descendencia!»

And He brought him outside and said, Look now toward the heavens and count the stars—if you are able to number them. Then He said to him, So shall your descendants be.

6 Y Abrán creyó al Señor, y eso le fue contado por justicia.

And he believed in (trusted in, relied on, remained steadfast to) the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness (right standing with God).

7 E l Señor también le dijo: «Yo soy el Señor. Yo te saqué de Ur de los caldeos, para darte esta tierra como herencia.»

And He said to him, I am the Lord, Who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees to give you this land as an inheritance.

8 Y Abrán respondió: «Señor, mi Señor, ¿y cómo sabré que la he de heredar?»

But he said, Lord God, by what shall I know that I shall inherit it?

9 E l Señor le dijo: «Tráeme una becerra, una cabra y un carnero, todos de tres años. Tráeme también una tórtola y un palomino.»

And He said to him, Bring to Me a heifer three years old, a she-goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

10 A brán tomó todos estos animales, y los partió por la mitad, y puso las mitades una frente a la otra; pero no partió las aves.

And he brought Him all these and cut them down the middle and laid each half opposite the other; but the birds he did not divide.

11 B ajaban las aves de rapiña sobre los cuerpos muertos, y Abrán las ahuyentaba,

And when the birds of prey swooped down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12 p ero al caer el sol el sueño venció a Abrán, y le sobrevino el temor de una gran oscuridad.

When the sun was setting, a deep sleep overcame Abram, and a horror (a terror, a shuddering fear) of great darkness assailed and oppressed him.

13 E ntonces el Señor le dijo: «Debes saber que tu descendencia habitará en una tierra extraña, y que allí será esclava y la oprimirán durante cuatrocientos años.

And said to Abram, Know positively that your descendants will be strangers dwelling as temporary residents in a land that is not theirs, and they will be slaves there and will be afflicted and oppressed for 400 years.

14 P ero también yo juzgaré a la nación a la cual servirán, y después de eso ellos saldrán de allí con grandes riquezas.

But I will bring judgment on that nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.

15 Y tú te reunirás en paz con tus padres, y serás sepultado en buena vejez.

And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old (hoary) age.

16 Y después de cuatro generaciones volverán acá; porque hasta ahora no ha llegado todavía a su colmo la maldad de los amorreos.»

And in the fourth generation they shall come back here again, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full and complete.

17 Y sucedió que, cuando el sol se puso y ya todo estaba oscuro, podía verse un horno humeante y una antorcha de fuego, la cual pasaba entre los animales divididos.

When the sun had gone down and a darkness had come on, behold, a smoking oven and a flaming torch passed between those pieces.

18 E n aquel día el Señor hizo un pacto con Abrán. Le dijo: «A tu descendencia le daré esta tierra, desde el río de Egipto hasta el gran río Éufrates,

On the same day the Lord made a covenant (promise, pledge) with Abram, saying, To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates—the land of

19 h asta la tierra de los quenitas, los quenizitas, los cadmoneos,

The Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,

20 l os hititas, los ferezeos, los refaítas,

The Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

21 l os amorreos, los cananeos, los gergeseos y los jebuseos.»

The Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
