The words of Lemuel king of Massa, which his mother taught him:

2 C he ti dirò, figlio mio? Che ti dirò, figlio del mio grembo? Che ti dirò, o figlio dei miei voti?

What, my son? What, son of my womb? What, son of my vows and dedication to God?

3 N on dare il tuo vigore alle donne, non frequentare quelle che mandano in rovina i re.

Give not your strength to women, nor your ways to those who and that which ruin and destroy kings.

4 N on si addice ai re, Lemuel, non si addice ai re bere del vino, né ai prìncipi desiderare bevande alcoliche,

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to desire strong drink,

5 c hé a volte, dopo aver bevuto, non dimentichino la legge e calpestino così i diritti di tutti i deboli.

Lest they drink and forget the law and what it decrees, and pervert the justice due any of the afflicted.

6 D ate bevande alcoliche a chi sta per perire e del vino a chi ha il cuore amareggiato;

Give strong drink to him who is ready to pass away, and wine to him in bitter distress of heart.

7 p erché bevano, dimentichino la loro miseria e non si ricordino più dei loro travagli.

Let him drink and forget his poverty and remember his want and misery no more.

8 A pri la bocca in favore del muto, per sostenere la causa di tutti gli infelici;

Open your mouth for the dumb, for the rights of all who are left desolate and defenseless;

9 a pri la bocca, giudica con giustizia, fa’ ragione al misero e al bisognoso. Elogio della donna virtuosa

Open your mouth, judge righteously, and administer justice for the poor and needy.

10 U na donna virtuosa chi la troverà? Il suo pregio sorpassa di molto quello delle perle.

A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman—who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls.

11 I l cuore di suo marito confida in lei, ed egli non mancherà mai di provviste.

The heart of her husband trusts in her confidently and relies on and believes in her securely, so that he has no lack of gain or need of spoil.

12 L ei gli fa del bene, e non del male, tutti i giorni della sua vita.

She comforts, encourages, and does him only good as long as there is life within her.

13 S i procura lana e lino e lavora gioiosa con le proprie mani.

She seeks out wool and flax and works with willing hands.

14 È simile alle navi dei mercanti: fa venire il suo cibo da lontano.

She is like the merchant ships loaded with foodstuffs; she brings her household’s food from a far.

15 S i alza quando ancora è notte, distribuisce il cibo alla famiglia e il compito alle sue serve.

She rises while it is yet night and gets food for her household and assigns her maids their tasks.

16 P osa gli occhi sopra un campo e lo acquista; con il guadagno delle sue mani pianta una vigna.

She considers a field before she buys or accepts it; with her savings she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard.

17 S i cinge di forza i fianchi e fa robuste le sue braccia.

She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong and firm.

18 S ente che il suo lavoro rende bene; la sua lucerna non si spegne la notte.

She tastes and sees that her gain from work is good; her lamp goes not out, but it burns on continually through the night.

19 M ette la mano alla rocca e le sue dita maneggiano il fuso.

She lays her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 T ende le palme al misero e porge le mani al bisognoso.

She opens her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her filled hands to the needy.

21 N on teme la neve per la sua famiglia, perché tutta la sua famiglia è vestita di lana rossa.

She fears not the snow for her family, for all her household are doubly clothed in scarlet.

22 S i fa dei tappeti, ha vesti di lino finissimo e di porpora.

She makes for herself coverlets, cushions, and rugs of tapestry. Her clothing is of linen, pure and fine, and of purple.

23 S uo marito è rispettato alle porte della città, quando si siede tra gli anziani del paese.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.

24 F a delle tuniche e le vende, e delle cinture che dà al mercante.

She makes fine linen garments and leads others to buy them; she delivers to the merchants girdles.

25 F orza e dignità sono il suo manto, e lei non teme l’avvenire.

Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; she rejoices over the future!

26 A pre la bocca con saggezza e ha sulla lingua insegnamenti di bontà.

She opens her mouth in skillful and godly Wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 S orveglia l’andamento della sua casa e non mangia il pane di pigrizia.

She looks well to how things go in her household, and the bread of idleness (gossip, discontent, and self-pity) she will not eat.

28 I suoi figli si alzano e la proclamano beata, e suo marito la loda, dicendo:

Her children rise up and call her blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied); and her husband boasts of and praises her,,

29 « Molte donne si sono comportate da virtuose, ma tu le superi tutte!»

Many daughters have done virtuously, nobly, and well, but you excel them all.

30 L a grazia è ingannevole e la bellezza è cosa vana; ma la donna che teme il Signore è quella che sarà lodata.

Charm and grace are deceptive, and beauty is vain, but a woman who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord, she shall be praised!

31 D atele del frutto delle sue mani, e le opere sue la lodino alle porte della città.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates!
