1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

Then Job answered,

2 « Di cose come queste ne ho udite tante! Siete tutti dei consolatori molesti!

I have heard many such things; wearisome and miserable comforters are you all!

3 Q uando finiranno i vostri discorsi vuoti? O che cosa ti spinge a rispondere?

Will your futile words of wind have no end? Or what makes you so bold to answer ?

4 A nch'io potrei parlare come voi, se foste al mio posto, potrei mettere assieme parole contro di voi scuotendo il mio capo contro di voi.

I also could speak as you do, if you were in my stead; I could join words together against you and shake my head at you.

5 M a vi incoraggerei con la mia bocca e il conforto delle mie labbra allevierebbe il vostro dolore.

I would strengthen and encourage you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would soothe your suffering.

6 S e parlo il mio dolore non è alleviato: se cesso di parlare, che sollievo ne ho?

If I speak, my sorrow is not soothed or lessened; and if I refrain, in what way am I eased?

7 O ra però egli mi ha ridotto allo stremo delle forze. Tu hai devastato l'intera mia famiglia

But now has taken away my strength. You have made desolate all my family and associates.

8 m i hai coperto di rughe e questo testimonia contro di me, la mia magrezza si leva e testimonia contro di me.

You have laid firm hold on me and have shriveled me up, which is a witness against me; and my leanness are further evidence; testify to my face.

9 L a sua ira mi dilania e mi perseguita, digrigna i denti contro di me. Il mio nemico aguzza il suo sguardo su di me.

'> My adversary Satan] has torn in his wrath and hated and persecuted me; he has gnashed upon me with his teeth; my adversary sharpens his eyes against me.

10 S palancando la loro bocca contro di me, mi percuotono con disprezzo sulle guance, si radunano assieme contro di me.

have gaped at me with their mouths; they have struck me upon the cheek insolently; they massed themselves together and conspired unanimously against me.

11 D io mi ha dato in balìa degli empi, mi ha consegnato nelle mani dei malvagi.

God has delivered me to the ungodly (to the evil one) and cast me into the hands of the wicked (Satan’s host).

12 V ivevo tranquillo ma egli mi ha distrutto, mi ha preso per il collo e mi ha fatto a pezzi, e ha fatto di me il suo bersaglio.

I was living at ease, but crushed me and broke me apart; yes, he seized me by the neck and dashed me in pieces; then he set me up for his target.

13 I suoi arcieri mi circondano da ogni parte, mi trafigge i reni senza pietà, versa a terra il mio fiele.

arrows whiz around me. He slashes open my vitals and does not spare; he pours out my gall on the ground.

14 E gli mi assale ripetutamente con violenza, mi si avventa contro come un guerriero.

stabs me, making breach after breach and attacking again and again; he runs at me like a giant and irresistible warrior.

15 H o cucito un cilicio, sulla mia pelle, ho abbassato la mia fronte nella polvere.

I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and have defiled my horn (my insignia of strength) in the dust.

16 I l mio viso è rosso per il pianto, e sulle mie palpebre si posa l'ombra di morte

My face is red and swollen with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death,

17 a nche se non c'è alcuna violenza nelle mie mani e la mia preghiera e pura.

Although there is no guilt or violence in my hands and my prayer is pure.

18 O terra, non coprire il mio sangue, e il mio grido non trovi alcun luogo di riposo.

O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry have no resting-place.

19 G ià fin d'ora, ecco, il mio testimone è in cielo, il mio garante è in alto.

Even now, behold, my Witness is in heaven, and He who vouches for me is on high.

20 I miei amici mi deridono, ma i miei occhi versano lacrime davanti a Dio.

My friends scorn me, but my eye pours out tears to God.

21 P ossa egli sostenere le ragioni dell'uomo presso Dio, come fa un uomo con il suo vicino.

Oh, that there might be one who would plead for a man with God and that he would maintain his right with Him, as a son of man pleads with or for his neighbor!

22 P asseranno infatti pochi anni ancora, e me ne andrò quindi per una via senza piú ritorno».

For when a few years are come, I shall go the way from which I shall not return.
