1 T ot pământul vorbea o singură limbă şi folosea aceleaşi cuvinte.

Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.

2 V enind dinspre răsărit, oamenii au găsit o câmpie în ţara Şinar şi s-au aşezat acolo.

It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

3 E i şi-au spus unul altuia: „Haideţi să facem cărămizi şi să le ardem bine.“ Ei foloseau cărămizi în loc de pietre şi smoală în loc de mortar.

They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

4 A poi au zis: „Haidem să ne construim o cetate şi un turn cu vârful până la cer şi să ne facem un nume, altfel vom fi împrăştiaţi pe tot pământul.“

They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

5 D omnul S-a coborât să vadă cetatea şi turnul pe care oamenii le construiau.

The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

6 D omnul a zis: „Ei sunt un singur popor, toţi au aceeaşi limbă, iar acesta este doar începutul a ceea ce vor să facă; nimic din ceea ce şi-au propus să facă nu va fi imposibil pentru ei.

The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.

7 H aidem să Ne coborâm şi să le încurcăm acolo limba, pentru ca ei să nu-şi mai înţeleagă limba unul altuia.“

Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

8 A stfel, Domnul i-a împrăştiat de acolo pe tot pământul, iar ei au încetat să mai construiască cetatea.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.

9 D e aceea cetatea a fost numită Babel, pentru că acolo Domnul a încurcat limba întregului pământ şi apoi i-a împrăştiat pe tot pământul. Urmaşii lui Sem până la Avram

Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. Descendants of Shem

10 A ceasta este genealogia lui Sem. La vârsta de o sută de ani, la doi ani după potop, lui Sem i s-a născut Arpahşad.

These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;

11 D upă naşterea lui Arpahşad, Sem a mai trăit cinci sute de ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.

12 L a vârsta de treizeci şi cinci de ani, lui Arpahşad i s-a născut Şelah.

Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;

13 D upă naşterea lui Şelah, Arpahşad a mai trăit patru sute trei ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.

14 L a vârsta de treizeci de ani, lui Şelah i s-a născut Eber.

Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber;

15 D upă naşterea lui Eber, Şelah a mai trăit patru sute trei ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.

16 L a vârsta de treizeci şi patru de ani, lui Eber i s-a născut Peleg.

Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;

17 D upă naşterea lui Peleg, Eber a mai trăit patru sute treizeci de ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.

18 L a vârsta de treizeci de ani, lui Peleg i s-a născut Reu.

Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;

19 D upă naşterea lui Reu, Peleg a mai trăit două sute nouă ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.

20 L a vârsta de treizeci şi doi de ani, lui Reu i s-a născut Serug.

Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;

21 D upă naşterea lui Serug, Reu a mai trăit două sute şapte ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.

22 L a vârsta de treizeci de ani, lui Serug i s-a născut Nahor.

Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor;

and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.

24 L a vârsta de douăzeci şi nouă de ani, lui Nahor i s-a născut Terah.

Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;

25 D upă naşterea lui Terah, Nahor a mai trăit o sută nouăsprezece ani şi i s-au mai născut şi alţi copii: fii şi fiice.

and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.

26 L a vârsta de şaptezeci de ani, lui Terah i s-au născut Avram, Nahor şi Haran.

Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

27 A ceasta este genealogia lui Terah: Terah a fost tatăl lui Avram, Nahor şi Haran. Haran a fost tatăl lui Lot.

Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.

28 H aran a murit înaintea tatălui său, Terah, în ţara în care s-a născut, în Ur din Caldeea.

Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

29 A vram şi Nahor şi-au luat soţii. Numele soţiei lui Avram era Sarai, iar numele soţiei lui Nahor era Milca. Ea era fiica lui Haran, tatăl Milcăi şi al Iscăi.

Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

30 S arai era stearpă; ea nu avea copii.

Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 T erah i-a luat pe fiul său Avram şi pe nepotul său Lot, fiul lui Haran, precum şi pe Sarai, nora sa şi soţia fiului său Avram, şi au ieşit împreună din Ur, din Caldeea, ca să meargă în Canaan; dar când au ajuns în Haran, s-au aşezat acolo.

Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.

32 T erah a trăit două sute cinci ani, apoi a murit în Haran.

The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
