1 U n bărbat din casa lui Levi îşi luase de soţie o fată a lui Levi.

Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi.

2 F emeia a rămas însărcinată şi a născut un fiu; fiindcă a văzut că era un copil frumos, ea l-a ascuns timp de trei luni.

The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months.

3 C ând nu l-a mai putut ascunde, a luat un coş de papirus, l-a uns cu lut şi smoală, a pus copilul în el şi l-a pus între trestii, pe malul râului.

But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.

4 S ora lui stătea la distanţă, ca să vadă ce se va întâmpla cu el.

His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.

5 F iica lui Faraon a coborât la râu să se scalde şi fetele care erau cu ea se plimbau pe malul râului; ea a văzut coşul între trestii şi şi-a trimis sclava să i-l aducă.

The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her.

6 C ând l-a deschis, a văzut înăuntru copilul. Acesta plângea, iar fiicei lui Faraon i s-a făcut milă de el şi a zis: „Trebuie să fie unul dintre copiii evreilor.“

When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

7 A tunci sora copilului a întrebat-o pe fiica lui Faraon: – Să merg şi să chem o doică dintre femeile evreilor ca să alăpteze copilul pentru tine?

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?”

8 – Du-te! i-a răspuns fiica lui Faraon. Fata s-a dus şi a chemat-o pe mama copilului.

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother.

9 F iica lui Faraon i-a zis: „Ia acest copil şi alăptează-l pentru mine, iar eu îţi voi plăti.“ Femeia a luat copilul şi l-a alăptat.

Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.

10 C ând copilul a crescut, ea l-a adus la fiica lui Faraon şi el a devenit fiul acesteia; ea i-a pus numele Moise, deoarece l-a scos din apă. Fuga lui Moise în Midian

The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

11 Î ntr-o zi, pe când crescuse deja, Moise a ieşit să vadă greutăţile celor din poporul său; el a văzut cum un egiptean îl bătea pe un evreu, unul dintre cei din poporul său.

Now it came about in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their hard labors; and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

12 S -a uitat într-o parte şi într-alta şi, nevăzând pe nimeni, l-a ucis pe egiptean şi l-a ascuns în nisip.

So he looked this way and that, and when he saw there was no one around, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

13 A doua zi, pe când ieşea din nou, a văzut doi evrei bătându-se. El l-a întrebat pe cel vinovat: – De ce-ţi loveşti semenul?

He went out the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were fighting with each other; and he said to the offender, “Why are you striking your companion?”

14 A cesta i-a răspuns: – Cine te-a pus pe tine conducător şi judecător peste noi? Vrei să mă ucizi şi pe mine aşa cum l-ai ucis pe egiptean? Atunci Moise s-a temut şi şi-a zis: „Cu siguranţă că acest lucru este cunoscut.“

But he said, “ Who made you a prince or a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.” Moses Escapes to Midian

15 C ând a aflat Faraon acest lucru, a căutat să-l omoare pe Moise. Însă Moise a fugit de Faraon şi s-a refugiat în ţara Midian; el s-a aşezat lângă o fântână.

When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

16 P reotul din Midian avea şapte fiice. Ele au venit la fântână, au scos apă şi au umplut jgheaburile ca să adape turma tatălui lor.

Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

17 A u sosit însă acolo nişte păstori care le-au izgonit; Moise s-a ridicat, le-a luat apărarea şi apoi le-a adăpat turmele.

Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock.

18 C ând ele s-au întors la tatăl lor, Reuel, acesta le-a întrebat: – Cum se face că aţi venit mai repede astăzi?

When they came to Reuel their father, he said, “Why have you come back so soon today?”

19 E le i-au răspuns: – Un egiptean ne-a scăpat din mâna păstorilor, ne-a scos apă şi ne-a adăpat turma.

So they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and what is more, he even drew the water for us and watered the flock.”

20 A tunci el le-a spus fiicelor sale: – Şi unde este acum omul acela? Cum de l-aţi lăsat acolo? Invitaţi-l la masă!

He said to his daughters, “Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Invite him to have something to eat.”

21 M oise a fost de acord să locuiască la acel om şi acesta i-a dat-o de soţie pe fiica sa, Sefora.

Moses was willing to dwell with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses.

22 E a a născut un fiu, iar Moise i-a pus numele Gherşom, zicându-şi: „Sunt un străin într-o ţară străină.“ Dumnezeu ia aminte la suferinţa israeliţilor

Then she gave birth to a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”

23 D upă o perioadă lungă de timp, monarhul Egiptului a murit. Israeliţii încă gemeau în sclavia lor şi strigau după ajutor; strigătul lor din cauza sclaviei a ajuns la cunoştinţa lui Dumnezeu.

Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God.

24 D umnezeu le-a auzit geamătul şi Şi-a adus aminte de legământul Său cu Avraam, cu Isaac şi cu Iacov.

So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

25 A stfel, Dumnezeu a luat aminte la starea israeliţilor şi I-a păsat de ei.

God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.
