1 P arole dell’Ecclesiaste, figlio di Davide, re di Gerusalemme.

Words of a preacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:

2 « Vanità delle vanità», dice l’Ecclesiaste, «vanità delle vanità, tutto è vanità».

Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, Vanity of vanities: the whole vanity.

3 C he profitto ha l’uomo di tutta la fatica che sostiene sotto il sole?

What advantage to man by all his labour that he laboureth at under the sun?

4 U na generazione se ne va, un’altra viene, e la terra sussiste per sempre.

A generation is going, and a generation is coming, and the earth to the age is standing.

5 A nche il sole sorge, poi tramonta, e si affretta verso il luogo da cui sorgerà di nuovo.

Also, the sun hath risen, and the sun hath gone in, and unto its place panting it is rising there.

6 I l vento soffia verso il mezzogiorno, poi gira verso settentrione; va girando, girando continuamente, per ricominciare gli stessi giri.

Going unto the south, and turning round unto the north, turning round, turning round, the wind is going, and by its circuits the wind hath returned.

7 T utti i fiumi corrono al mare, eppure il mare non si riempie; al luogo dove i fiumi si dirigono, continuano a dirigersi sempre.

All the streams are going unto the sea, and the sea is not full; unto a place whither the streams are going, thither they are turning back to go.

8 O gni cosa è in travaglio, più di quanto l’uomo possa dire; l’occhio non si sazia mai di vedere e l’orecchio non è mai stanco di udire.

All these things are wearying; a man is not able to speak, the eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor filled is the ear from hearing.

9 C iò che è stato è quel che sarà; ciò che si è fatto è quel che si farà. Non c’è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.

What that which hath been? it that which is, and what that which hath been done? it that which is done, and there is not an entirely new thing under the sun.

10 C ’è forse qualcosa di cui si possa dire: «Guarda, questo è nuovo?» Quella cosa esisteva già nei secoli che ci hanno preceduto.

There is a thing of which saith: `See this, it new!' already it hath been in the ages that were before us!

11 N on rimane memoria delle cose d’altri tempi; così di quanto succederà in seguito non rimarrà memoria fra quelli che verranno più tardi. Vanità della saggezza umana

There is not a remembrance of former; and also of the latter that are, there is no remembrance of them with those that are at the last.

12 I o, l’Ecclesiaste, sono stato re d’Israele a Gerusalemme,

I, a preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 e ho applicato il cuore a cercare e a investigare con saggezza tutto ciò che si fa sotto il cielo: occupazione penosa, che Dio ha data ai figli degli uomini perché vi si affatichino.

And I have given my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that hath been done under the heavens. It a sad travail God hath given to the sons of man to be humbled by it.

14 I o ho visto tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole, ed ecco, tutto è vanità, è un correre dietro al vento.

I have seen all the works that have been done under the sun, and lo, the whole vanity and vexation of spirit!

15 C iò che è storto non può essere raddrizzato, ciò che manca non può essere contato.

A crooked thing is not able to make straight, and a lacking thing is not able to be numbered.

16 I o ho detto, parlando in cuor mio: «Ecco, io ho acquistato maggiore saggezza di tutti quelli che hanno regnato prima di me a Gerusalemme; sì, il mio cuore ha posseduto molta saggezza e molta scienza».

I -- I spake with my heart, saying, `I, lo, I have magnified and added wisdom above every one who hath been before me at Jerusalem, and my heart hath seen abundantly wisdom and knowledge.

17 H o applicato il cuore a conoscere la saggezza e a conoscere la follia e la stoltezza; ho riconosciuto che anche questo è un correre dietro al vento.

And I give my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I have known that even this vexation of spirit;

18 I nfatti, dov’è molta saggezza c’è molto affanno, e chi accresce la sua scienza accresce il suo dolore.

for, in abundance of wisdom abundance of sadness, and he who addeth knowledge addeth pain.'
