1 Q uando Adoni-Sedec, re di Gerusalemme, udì che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l’aveva votata allo sterminio, che aveva trattato Ai e il suo re nel modo in cui aveva trattato Gerico e il suo re, che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto la pace con gli Israeliti ed erano in mezzo a loro,

And it cometh to pass, when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heareth that Joshua hath captured Ai, and doth devote it (as he had done to Jericho and to her king so he hath done to Ai and to her king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon have made peace with Israel, and are in their midst, --

2 f u tutto spaventato. Infatti Gabaon era una città grande come una delle città regali, anche più grande di Ai, e tutti gli uomini suoi erano valorosi.

that they are greatly afraid, because Gibeon a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it greater than Ai, and all its men -- heroes.

3 P erciò Adoni-Sedec, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piram, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis e a Debir, re di Eglon:

And Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sendeth unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 « Salite da me, soccorretemi e noi batteremo Gabaon, perché ha fatto la pace con Giosuè e con i figli d’Israele».

`Come up unto me, and help me, and we smite Gibeon, for it hath made peace with Joshua, and with the sons of Israel.'

5 C inque re degli Amorei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon si radunarono, salirono con tutti i loro eserciti, si accamparono di fronte a Gabaon e l’attaccarono.

And five kings of the Amorite (the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon) are gathered together, and go up, they and all their camps, and encamp against Gibeon, and fight against it.

6 A llora i Gabaoniti mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Ghilgal: «Non negare ai tuoi servi il tuo aiuto; affrèttati a salire da noi, liberaci, soccorrici, perché tutti i re degli Amorei che abitano la regione montuosa si sono radunati contro di noi».

And the men of Gibeon send unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, saying, `Let not thy hand cease from thy servants; come up unto us haste, and give safety to us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorite, dwelling in the hill-country, have been assembled against us.'

7 G iosuè dunque salì da Ghilgal, con tutta la gente di guerra e con tutti gli uomini segnalati per valore.

And Joshua goeth up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, even all the mighty men of valour.

8 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Non li temere, perché io li ho dati in tuo potere; nessuno di loro potrà resistere di fronte a te».

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Be not afraid of them, for into thy hand I have given them, there doth not stand a man of them in thy presence.'

9 C osì Giosuè piombò loro addosso all’improvviso: aveva marciato tutta la notte da Ghilgal.

And Joshua cometh in unto them suddenly (all the night he hath gone up from Gilgal),

10 E il Signore li mise in rotta davanti a Israele, che inflisse loro una grande sconfitta presso Gabaon, li inseguì per la via che sale a Bet-Oron, e li batté fino ad Azeca e a Maccheda.

and Jehovah doth crush them before Israel, and it smiteth them -- a great smiting -- at Gibeon, and pursueth them the way of the ascent of Beth-Horon, and smiteth them unto Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11 M entre fuggivano davanti a Israele ed erano alla discesa di Bet-Oron, il Signore fece cadere dal cielo su di loro delle grosse pietre fino ad Azeca, ed essi perirono: quelli che morirono per le pietre della grandinata furono più numerosi di quelli che i figli d’Israele uccisero con la spada.

And it cometh to pass, in their fleeing from the face of Israel -- they in the descent of Beth-Horon -- and Jehovah hath cast upon them great stones out of the heavens, unto Azekah, and they die; more are they who have died by the hailstones than they whom the sons of Israel have slain by the sword.

12 A llora Giosuè parlò al Signore, il giorno che il Signore diede gli Amorei in mano ai figli d’Israele, e disse in presenza d’Israele: «Sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, luna, sulla valle di Aialon!»

Then speaketh Joshua to Jehovah in the day of Jehovah's giving up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he saith, before the eyes of Israel, `Sun -- in Gibeon stand still; and moon -- in the valley of Ajalon;'

13 E il sole si fermò, e la luna rimase al suo posto, finché la nazione si fu vendicata dei suoi nemici. Questo non sta forse scritto nel libro del Giusto? E il sole si fermò in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare per quasi un giorno intero.

and the sun standeth still, and the moon hath stood -- till the nation taketh vengeance its enemies; is it not written on the Book of the Upright, `and the sun standeth in the midst of the heavens, and hath not hasted to go in -- as a perfect day?'

14 E mai, né prima né poi, c’è stato un giorno simile a quello, nel quale il Signore abbia esaudito la voce di un uomo; perché il Signore combatteva per Israele.

And there hath not been like that day before it or after it, for Jehovah's hearkening to the voice of a man; for Jehovah is fighting for Israel.

15 P oi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò all’accampamento di Ghilgal.

And Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.

16 O r i cinque re erano fuggiti, e si erano nascosti nella caverna di Maccheda.

And these five kings flee, and are hidden in a cave at Makkedah,

17 L a cosa fu riferita a Giosuè e gli fu detto: «I cinque re sono stati trovati nascosti nella caverna di Maccheda».

and it is declared to Joshua, saying, `The five kings have been found hidden in a cave at Makkedah.'

18 A llora Giosuè disse: «Rotolate delle grosse pietre all’imboccatura della caverna, e mettetevi degli uomini per far loro la guardia;

And Joshua saith, `Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and appoint over it men to watch them;

19 m a voi non vi fermate; inseguite i vostri nemici e colpite le retroguardie; non li lasciate entrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore, il vostro Dio, li ha dati in vostro potere».

and ye, stand not, pursue after your enemies, and ye have smitten the hindmost of them; suffer them not to go in unto their cities, for Jehovah your God hath given them into your hand.'

20 Q uando Giosuè e i figli d’Israele ebbero finito d’infliggere loro una completa disfatta, e quelli che scamparono si furono rifugiati nelle città fortificate,

And it cometh to pass, when Joshua and the sons of Israel finish to smite them -- a very great smiting, till they are consumed, and the remnant who have remained of them go in unto the fenced cities,

21 t utto il popolo tornò tranquillamente a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Maccheda, senza che nessuno osasse fiatare contro i figli d’Israele.

that all the people turn back to the camp, unto Joshua, Makkedah, in peace; none moved sharply his tongue against the sons of Israel.

22 A llora Giosuè disse: «Aprite l’imboccatura della caverna e conducetemi fuori quei cinque re».

And Joshua saith, `Open ye the mouth of the cave, and bring out unto me these five kings from the cave;'

23 Q uelli agirono così: fecero uscire dalla caverna quei cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis, il re di Eglon, e glieli condussero.

and they do so, and bring out unto him these five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

24 E quando quei re furono tolti dalla caverna e condotti da Giosuè, Giosuè chiamò tutti gli uomini d’Israele e disse ai capi dei guerrieri che erano andati con lui: «Avvicinatevi, mettete il piede sul collo di questi re». Quelli si avvicinarono e misero il piede sul loro collo.

And it cometh to pass, when they bring out these kings unto Joshua, that Joshua calleth unto every man of Israel, and saith unto the captains of the men of war, who have gone with him, `Draw near, set your feet on the necks of these kings;' and they draw near, and set their feet on their necks.

25 G iosuè disse loro: «Non temete, non vi sgomentate, siate forti e coraggiosi, perché così farà il Signore a tutti i vostri nemici contro i quali dovrete combattere».

And Joshua saith unto them, `Fear not, nor be affrighted; be strong and courageous; for thus doth Jehovah do to all your enemies with whom ye are fighting;'

26 D opo ciò Giosuè li colpì e li uccise; quindi li appese a cinque alberi; e quelli rimasero appesi agli alberi fino alla sera.

and Joshua smiteth them afterwards, and putteth them to death, and hangeth them on five trees; and they are hanging on the trees till the evening.

27 A l tramonto, Giosuè ordinò che fossero calati dagli alberi e gettati nella caverna dove si erano nascosti, e che all’imboccatura della caverna fossero messe delle grosse pietre. Esse sono rimaste lì fino a oggi.

And it cometh to pass, at the time of the going in of the sun, Joshua hath commanded, and they take them down from off the trees, and cast them unto the cave where they had been hid, and put great stones on the mouth of the cave till this very day.

28 I n quel medesimo giorno Giosuè prese Maccheda e fece passare a fil di spada la città e il suo re; li votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il re di Maccheda come aveva trattato il re di Gerico. Conquiste nel mezzogiorno

And Makkedah hath Joshua captured on that day, and he smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and its king he hath devoted, them and every person who in it -- he hath not left a remnant; and he doth to the king of Makkedah as he did to the king of Jericho.

29 P oi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Maccheda a Libna, e l’attaccò.

And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah Libnah, and fighteth with Libnah;

30 I l Signore diede anche quella città con il suo re nelle mani d’Israele, e Giosuè la mise a fil di spada con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.

and Jehovah giveth also it into the hand of Israel, and its king, and it smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who in it -- it left not in it a remnant; and it doth to its king as it did to the king of Jericho.

31 P oi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Libna a Lachis; si accampò di fronte a questa e l’attaccò.

And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encampeth against it, and fighteth against it;

32 I l Signore diede Lachis nelle mani d’Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno, e la mise a fil di spada, con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Libna. Allora Oram, re di Ghezer, salì in soccorso di Lachis.

And Jehovah giveth Lachish into the hand of Israel, and it captureth it on the second day, and smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who in it, according to all that it did to Libnah.

33 M a Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo senza lasciarne scampare alcuno.

Than hath Horam king of Gezer come up to help Lachish, and Joshua smiteth him and his people, till he hath not left to him a remnant.

34 P oi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Lachis a Eglon; si accamparono di fronte a questa e l’attaccarono.

And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and they encamp against it, and fight against it,

35 L a presero quel medesimo giorno e la misero a fil di spada. In quel giorno Giosuè votò allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Lachis.

and capture it on that day, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who in it on that day he hath devoted, according to all that he did to Lachish.

36 P oi Giosuè con tutto Israele salì da Eglon a Ebron e l’attaccarono.

And Joshua goeth up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fight against it,

37 L a presero, la misero a fil di spada insieme con il suo re, con tutte le sue città e con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò sfuggire una, esattamente come aveva fatto a Eglon; la votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano.

and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and every person who in it -- he hath not left a remnant -- according to all that he did to Eglon -- and doth devote it, and every person who in it.

38 P oi Giosuè con tutto Israele tornò verso Debir e l’attaccò.

And Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fighteth against it,

39 L a prese con il suo re e con tutte le sue città; la misero a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, senza che ne scampasse una. Egli trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Ebron, come aveva trattato Libna e il suo re.

and captureth it, and its king, and all its cities, and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and devote every person who in it -- he hath not left a remnant; as he did to Hebron so he did to Debir, and to its king, and as he did to Libnah, and to its king.

40 G iosuè dunque batté tutto il paese, la contrada montuosa, la regione meridionale, la regione bassa, le pendici e tutti i loro re; non lasciò scampare nessuno, ma votò allo sterminio tutto ciò che aveva vita, come il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, aveva comandato.

And Joshua smiteth all the land of the hill-country, and of the south, and of the low-country, and of the springs, and all their kings -- he hath not left a remnant, and all that doth breathe he hath devoted, as Jehovah, God of Israel, commanded.

41 C osì Giosuè li batté da Cades-Barnea fino a Gaza, e batté tutto il paese di Goscen fino a Gabaon.

And Joshua smiteth them from Kadesh-Barnea, even unto Gaza, and all the land of Goshen, even unto Gibeon;

42 G iosuè prese in una volta sola tutti quei re e i loro paesi, perché il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, combatteva per Israele.

and all these kings and their land hath Joshua captured one time, for Jehovah, God of Israel, is fighting for Israel.

43 P oi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò all’accampamento di Ghilgal.

and Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.
