1 M a i figli d’Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, e il Signore li diede nelle mani di Madian per sette anni.

And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Midian seven years,

2 L a mano di Madian fu potente contro Israele; e, per la paura dei Madianiti, i figli d’Israele si fecero quelle grotte che sono nei monti, delle caverne e dei forti.

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3 Q uando Israele aveva seminato, i Madianiti con gli Amalechiti e con i popoli dell’oriente salivano contro di lui,

And it hath been, if Israel hath sowed, that Midian hath come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, yea, they have come up against him,

4 s i accampavano contro gl’Israeliti, distruggevano tutti i prodotti del paese fino a Gaza e non lasciavano in Israele né viveri, né pecore, né buoi, né asini.

and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land till thine entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or ass;

5 I nfatti salivano con le loro greggi e con le loro tende e arrivavano come una moltitudine di cavallette; essi e i loro cammelli erano innumerevoli e venivano nel paese per devastarlo.

for they and their cattle come up, with their tents; they come in as the fulness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their cattle there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.

6 I sraele dunque fu ridotto in grande miseria a causa di Madian; e i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore.

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.

7 Q uando i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore a causa di Madian,

And it cometh to pass when the sons of Israel have cried unto Jehovah, concerning Midian,

8 i l Signore mandò ai figli d’Israele un profeta, che disse loro: «Così dice il Signore, il Dio d’Israele: “Io vi feci salire dall’Egitto e vi feci uscire dalla casa di schiavitù;

that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

9 v i liberai dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano di tutti quelli che vi opprimevano; li scacciai davanti a voi, vi diedi il loro paese

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give to you their land,

10 e vi dissi: ‘Io sono il Signore, il vostro Dio; non adorate gli dèi degli Amorei nel paese dei quali abitate’; ma voi non avete ascoltato la mia voce”». Vocazione di Gedeone

and I say to you, I Jehovah your God, ye do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land ye are dwelling: -- and ye have not hearkened to My voice.'

11 P oi venne l’angelo del Signore e si sedette sotto il terebinto di Ofra, che apparteneva a Ioas, abiezerita; e Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, trebbiava il grano nello strettoio per nasconderlo ai Madianiti.

And the messenger of Jehovah cometh and sitteth under the oak which in Ophrah, which to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and Gideon his son is beating out wheat in the wine-press, to remove from the presence of the Midianites;

12 L ’angelo del Signore gli apparve e gli disse: «Il Signore è con te, o uomo forte e valoroso!»

and the messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith unto him, `Jehovah with thee, O mighty one of valour.'

13 G edeone gli rispose: «Ahimè, mio signore, se il Signore è con noi, perché ci è accaduto tutto questo? Dove sono tutte quelle sue meraviglie che i nostri padri ci hanno narrate dicendo: “Il Signore non ci ha forse fatti uscire dall’Egitto?” Ma ora il Signore ci ha abbandonati e ci ha dati nelle mani di Madian».

And Gideon saith unto him, `O, my lord -- and Jehovah is with us! -- and why hath all this found us? and where all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Hath not Jehovah brought us up out of Egypt? and now Jehovah hath left us, and doth give us into the hand of Midian.'

14 A llora il Signore si rivolse a lui e gli disse: «Va’ con questa tua forza e salva Israele dalla mano di Madian; non sono io che ti mando?»

And Jehovah turneth unto him and saith, `Go in this -- thy power; and thou hast saved Israel out of the hand of Midian -- have not I sent thee.'

15 E gli rispose: «Ah, signore mio, con che salverò Israele? Ecco, la mia famiglia è la più povera di Manasse, e io sono il più piccolo nella casa di mio padre».

And he saith unto him, `O, my lord, wherewith do I save Israel? lo, my chief weak in Manasseh, and I the least in the house of my father.'

16 I l Signore gli disse: «Io sarò con te e tu sconfiggerai i Madianiti come se fossero un uomo solo».

And Jehovah saith unto him, `Because I am with thee -- thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.'

17 G edeone a lui: «Se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, dammi un segno che sei proprio tu che mi parli.

And he saith unto Him, `If, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, then Thou hast done for me a sign that Thou art speaking with me.

18 T i prego, non te ne andare di qui prima che io torni da te, ti porti la mia offerta e te la metta davanti». Il Signore disse: «Aspetterò finché tu ritorni».

Move not, I pray Thee, from this, till my coming in unto Thee, and I have brought out my present, and put it before Thee;' and he saith, `I -- I do abide till thy return.'

19 A llora Gedeone entrò in casa, preparò un capretto e, con un efa di farina, fece delle focacce azzime; mise la carne in un canestro, il brodo in una pentola, gli portò tutto sotto il terebinto e glielo offrì.

And Gideon hath gone in, and prepareth a kid of the goats, and of an ephah of flour unleavened things; the flesh he hath put in a basket, and the broth he hath put in a pot, and he bringeth out unto Him, unto the place of the oak, and bringeth nigh.

20 L ’angelo di Dio gli disse: «Prendi la carne e le focacce azzime, mettile su questa roccia e versavi su il brodo». Egli fece così.

And the messenger of God saith unto him, `Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place on this rock -- and the broth pour out;' and he doth so.

21 A llora l’angelo del Signore stese la punta del bastone che aveva in mano e toccò la carne e le focacce azzime; dalla roccia uscì un fuoco che consumò la carne e le focacce azzime; e l’angelo del Signore scomparve dalla sua vista.

And the messenger of Jehovah putteth forth the end of the staff which in His hand, and cometh against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goeth up out of the rock and consumeth the flesh and the unleavened things -- and the messenger of Jehovah hath gone from his eyes.

22 A llora Gedeone vide che era l’angelo del Signore e disse: «Misero me, Signore, Dio, perché ho visto l’angelo del Signore faccia a faccia!»

And Gideon seeth that He a messenger of Jehovah, and Gideon saith, `Alas, Lord Jehovah! because that I have seen a messenger of Jehovah face to face!'

23 I l Signore gli disse: «Sta’ in pace, non temere, non morirai!»

And Jehovah saith to him, `Peace to thee; fear not; thou dost not die.'

24 A llora Gedeone costruì un altare al Signore e lo chiamò Signore -Pace. Esso esiste anche al giorno d’oggi, a Ofra degli Abiezeriti. Distruzione dell’altare di Baal

And Gideon buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and calleth it Jehovah-Shalom, unto this day it yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.

25 Q uella stessa notte il Signore gli disse: «Prendi il toro di tuo padre e il secondo toro di sette anni, demolisci l’altare di Baal che è di tuo padre, abbatti l’idolo che gli sta vicino

And it cometh to pass, on that night, that Jehovah saith to him, `Take the young ox which to thy father, and the second bullock of seven years, and thou hast thrown down the altar of Baal which to thy father, and the shrine which by it thou dost cut down,

26 e costruisci un altare al Signore, al tuo Dio, in cima a questa roccia, disponendo ogni cosa con ordine; poi prendi il secondo toro e offrilo come olocausto usando il legno dell’idolo che avrai abbattuto.

and thou hast built an altar to Jehovah thy God on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and hast taken the second bullock, and caused to ascend a burnt-offering with the wood of the shrine which thou cuttest down.'

27 A llora Gedeone prese dieci uomini tra i suoi servitori e fece come il Signore gli aveva detto; ma non osando farlo di giorno, per paura della casa di suo padre e della gente della città, lo fece di notte.

And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do by day, that he doth by night.

28 Q uando la gente della città l’indomani mattina si alzò, ecco che l’altare di Baal era stato demolito, che l’idolo postovi accanto era abbattuto e che il secondo toro era offerto in olocausto sull’altare che era stato costruito.

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.

29 S i dissero l’un l’altro: «Chi ha fatto questo?» Dopo essersi informati e dopo aver fatto delle ricerche, fu loro detto: «Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, ha fatto questo».

And they say one to another, `Who hath done this thing?' and they inquire and seek, and they say, `Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.'

30 A llora la gente della città disse a Ioas: «Conduci fuori tuo figlio e sia messo a morte, perché ha demolito l’altare di Baal e ha abbattuto l’idolo che gli stava vicino».

And the men of the city say unto Joash, `Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which by it.'

31 I oas rispose a tutti quelli che insorgevano contro di lui: «Volete difendere la causa di Baal? Volete venirgli in soccorso? Chi vorrà difendere la sua causa sarà messo a morte prima di domattina; se esso è un dio, difenda egli stesso la sua causa, visto che hanno demolito il suo altare».

And Joash saith to all who have stood against him, `Ye, do ye plead for Baal? ye -- do ye save him? he who pleadeth for him is put to death during the morning; if he a god he himself doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

32 P erciò quel giorno Gedeone fu chiamato Ierubbaal, perché si disse: «Difenda Baal la sua causa contro di lui, visto che egli ha demolito il suo altare».

And he calleth him, on that day, Jerubbaal, saying, `The Baal doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

33 T utti i Madianiti, gli Amalechiti e i popoli dell’Oriente si radunarono, attraversarono il Giordano e si accamparono nella valle di Izreel.

And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the valley of Jezreel,

34 M a lo Spirito del Signore rivestì Gedeone, il quale suonò la tromba, e gli Abiezeriti furono convocati per seguirlo.

and the Spirit of Jehovah hath clothed Gideon, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;

35 E gli mandò anche dei messaggeri in tutto Manasse, invitandolo a seguirlo; mandò dei messaggeri nelle tribù di Ascer, di Zabulon e di Neftali, e anche queste salirono a incontrarli.

and messengers he hath sent into all Manasseh, and it also is called after him; and messengers he hath sent into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.

36 G edeone disse a Dio: «Se vuoi salvare Israele per mano mia, come hai detto,

And Gideon saith unto God, `If Thou art Saviour of Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

37 e cco, io metterò un vello di lana sull’aia: se c’è della rugiada sul vello soltanto e tutto il terreno resta asciutto, io saprò che tu salverai Israele per mia mano come hai detto».

lo, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is on the fleece alone, and on all the earth drought -- then I have known that Thou dost save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken;'

38 C osì avvenne. La mattina dopo, Gedeone si alzò presto, strizzò il vello e ne spremette la rugiada: una coppa piena d’acqua.

and it is so, and he riseth early on the morrow, and presseth the fleece, and wringeth dew out of the fleece -- the fulness of the bowl, of water.

39 G edeone disse a Dio: «Non si accenda l’ira tua contro di me. Io non parlerò che questa volta soltanto. Permetti che io faccia un’altra prova con il vello: resti asciutto soltanto il vello e ci sia della rugiada su tutto il terreno».

And Gideon saith unto God, `Let not Thine anger burn against me, and I speak only this time; let me try, I pray Thee, only this time with the fleece -- let there be, I pray Thee, drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth let there be dew.'

40 D io fece così quella notte: il vello soltanto restò asciutto e ci fu della rugiada su tutto il terreno.

And God doth so on that night, and there is drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth there hath been dew.
