1 I discepoli dei profeti dissero a Eliseo: «Ecco, il luogo dove noi ci raduniamo in tua presenza è troppo stretto per noi.

And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, `Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;

2 L asciaci andare fino al Giordano; ciascuno di noi prenderà là una trave, e ci costruiremo un locale dove possiamo riunirci». Eliseo rispose: «Andate».

let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, `Go.'

3 U no di loro disse: «Ti prego, vieni anche tu con i tuoi servi». Egli rispose: «Verrò».

And the one saith, `Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, `I -- I go.'

4 C osì andò con loro. Quando giunsero al Giordano, si misero a tagliar legna.

And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,

5 M entre uno di loro abbatteva un albero, il ferro della scure gli cadde nell’acqua. Perciò egli cominciò a gridare: «Ah, mio signore, l’avevo presa in prestito!»

and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, `Alas! my lord, and it asked!'

6 L ’uomo di Dio disse: «Dov’è caduta?» Quello gli indicò il luogo. Allora Eliseo tagliò un pezzo di legno, lo gettò in quel medesimo luogo, fece venire a galla il ferro e disse: «Prendilo».

And the man of God saith, `Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,

7 Q uello stese la mano e lo prese. I Siri colpiti da cecità

and saith, `Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.

8 A llora il re di Siria faceva guerra contro Israele; e, in un consiglio che tenne con i suoi servitori, disse: «Io porrò il mio accampamento nel tale e tal luogo».

And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, `At such and such a place my encamping.'

9 L ’uomo di Dio mandò a dire al re d’Israele: «Guàrdati dal trascurare quel tal luogo, perché vi stanno scendendo i Siri».

And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, `Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

10 A llora il re d’Israele mandò gente verso il luogo che l’uomo di Dio gli aveva detto, e circa il quale era stato preavvisato; e là si tenne in guardia. Il fatto avvenne non una né due, ma più volte.

and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

11 Q uesta cosa turbò molto il cuore del re di Siria, che chiamò i suoi servitori e disse loro: «Fatemi sapere chi dei nostri è per il re d’Israele».

And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, `Do ye not declare to me who of us for the king of Israel?'

12 U no dei suoi servitori rispose: «Nessuno, o re, mio signore! Ma Eliseo, il profeta che sta in Israele, fa sapere al re d’Israele persino le parole che tu dici nella camera dove dormi».

And one of his servants saith, `Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'

13 A llora il re disse: «Andate, vedete dov’è, e io lo manderò a prendere». Gli fu riferito che era a Dotan.

And he saith, `Go ye and see where he, and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, `Lo -- in Dothan.'

14 I l re vi mandò cavalli, carri e numerosi soldati, i quali giunsero di notte e circondarono la città.

And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.

15 I l servo dell’uomo di Dio, alzatosi di buon mattino, andò fuori e vide che un gran numero di soldati con cavalli e carri accerchiava la città. Il servo disse all’uomo di Dio: «Ah, mio signore, come faremo?»

And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, `Alas! my lord, how do we do?'

16 Q uegli rispose: «Non temere, perché quelli che sono con noi sono più numerosi di quelli che sono con loro».

And he saith, `Fear not, for more they who with us than they who with them.'

17 E d Eliseo pregò e disse: « Signore, ti prego, aprigli gli occhi, perché veda!» E il Signore aprì gli occhi del servo, che vide a un tratto il monte pieno di cavalli e di carri di fuoco intorno a Eliseo.

And Elisha prayeth, and saith, `Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18 M entre i Siri scendevano verso Eliseo, questi pregò il Signore e disse: «Ti prego, acceca questa gente!» E il Signore li accecò, secondo la parola di Eliseo.

And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19 A llora Eliseo disse loro: «Non è questa la strada, e non è questa la città; venite dietro a me, e io vi condurrò dall’uomo che voi cercate». E li condusse a Samaria.

And Elisha saith unto them, `This not the way, nor this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.

20 Q uando furono entrati a Samaria, Eliseo disse: «O Signore, apri loro gli occhi, affinché vedano». Il Signore aprì loro gli occhi, e a un tratto videro che si trovavano nel mezzo di Samaria.

And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, `Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!

21 I l re d’Israele, come li ebbe veduti, disse a Eliseo: «Padre mio, li debbo colpire? Li debbo colpire?»

And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, `Do I smite -- do I smite -- my father?'

22 E liseo rispose: «Non li colpire! Colpisci tu forse quelli che fai prigionieri con la tua spada e con il tuo arco? Metti loro davanti del pane e dell’acqua, affinché mangino e bevano, e se ne tornino dal loro signore».

And he saith, `Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'

23 I l re d’Israele preparò loro abbondanza di cibi; e quand’ebbero mangiato e bevuto, li congedò, e quelli tornarono dal loro signore; e le bande di Siri non vennero più a fare incursioni sul territorio d’Israele. Assedio di Samaria

And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.

24 D opo queste cose, Ben-Adad, re di Siria, radunò tutto il suo esercito, salì contro Samaria e la cinse d’assedio.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,

25 C i fu una grande carestia in Samaria, e i Siri l’assediarono in modo tale che una testa d’asino la si vendeva a ottanta sicli d’argento, e il quarto d’un cab di sterco di colombi a cinque sicli d’argento.

and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.

26 M entre il re d’Israele passava sulle mura, una donna gli gridò: «Aiutami, o re, mio signore!»

And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, `Save, my lord, O king.'

27 I l re le disse: «Se non ti aiuta il Signore, come posso aiutarti io? Con quel che dà l’aia o con quel che dà il frantoio?»

And he saith, `Jehovah doth not save thee -- whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'

28 P oi il re aggiunse: «Che hai?» Lei rispose: «Questa donna mi disse: “Dammi tuo figlio, ché lo mangiamo oggi; domani mangeremo il mio”.

And the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;

29 C osì abbiamo fatto cuocere mio figlio e lo abbiamo mangiato. Il giorno seguente io le dissi: “Dammi tuo figlio, ché lo mangiamo”. Ma lei ha nascosto suo figlio».

and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'

30 Q uando il re udì le parole della donna si stracciò le vesti; e, mentre passava sulle mura, il popolo vide che sotto, sulla carne, portava un cilicio.

And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth on his flesh within.

31 I l re disse: «Mi tratti Dio con tutto il suo rigore, se oggi la testa di Eliseo, figlio di Safat, rimane sulle sue spalle!»

And he saith, `Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add -- if it remain -- the head of Elisha son of Shaphat -- upon him this day.'

32 E liseo se ne stava seduto in casa sua, e con lui stavano gli anziani. Il re mandò avanti un uomo; ma prima che questo inviato giungesse, Eliseo disse agli anziani: «Vedete che questo figlio d’un assassino manda qualcuno a tagliarmi la testa? Badate bene; quando arriva l’inviato, chiudete la porta, e tenetegliela ben chiusa in faccia. Non si sente già dietro a lui il rumore dei passi del suo signore?»

And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, `Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'

33 E gli parlava ancora con loro, quand’ecco scendere verso di lui l’inviato, che disse: «Ecco, questo male viene dal Signore; che ho più da sperare dal Signore ?»

He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, `Lo, this the evil from Jehovah: what -- do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
