1 L os hijos de los profetas dijeron a Eliseo: —Mira, el lugar en que vivimos contigo es estrecho para nosotros.

And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, `Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;

2 V ayamos ahora al Jordán, tomemos cada uno una viga y hagamos allí un lugar donde habitar. —Id, pues —respondió Eliseo.

let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, `Go.'

3 — Te rogamos que vengas con tus siervos —dijo uno. —Iré —respondió él.

And the one saith, `Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, `I -- I go.'

4 S e fue, pues, con ellos y, cuando llegaron al Jordán, cortaron la madera.

And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,

5 P ero aconteció que mientras uno derribaba un árbol se le cayó el hacha al agua, y gritó diciendo: —¡Ah, señor mío, era prestada!

and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, `Alas! my lord, and it asked!'

6 — ¿Dónde cayó? —preguntó el varón de Dios. Él le mostró el lugar. Entonces Eliseo cortó un palo, lo echó allí e hizo flotar el hacha.

And the man of God saith, `Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,

7 — Recógela —dijo Eliseo. El otro extendió la mano y la recogió. Eliseo y los sirios

and saith, `Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.

8 E staba el rey de Siria en guerra contra Israel, y en consejo con sus siervos dijo: «En tal y tal lugar estará mi campamento.»

And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, `At such and such a place my encamping.'

9 E ntonces el varón de Dios envió a decir al rey de Israel: «No pases por tal lugar, porque los sirios van hacia allá.»

And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, `Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

10 D e manera que el rey de Israel enviaba gente a aquel lugar que el varón de Dios le había dicho. Así lo hizo una y otra vez con el fin de cuidarse.

and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

11 E l corazón del rey de Siria se turbó por esto, así que llamó a sus siervos y les dijo: —¿No me descubriréis vosotros quién de los nuestros está de parte del rey de Israel?

And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, `Do ye not declare to me who of us for the king of Israel?'

12 U no de los siervos respondió: —No, rey y señor mío; el profeta Eliseo, que está en Israel, es el que hace saber al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu habitación más secreta.

And one of his servants saith, `Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'

13 E l rey ordenó: —Id y ved dónde está, para que yo envíe a apresarlo. Alguien le dijo: —Está en Dotán.

And he saith, `Go ye and see where he, and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, `Lo -- in Dothan.'

14 Y el rey envió allí gente de a caballo, carros y un gran ejército, los cuales llegaron de noche y sitiaron la ciudad.

And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.

15 E l criado que servía al varón de Dios se levantó de mañana y salió. Al ver que el ejército tenía sitiada la ciudad, con gente de a caballo y carros, dijo a Eliseo: —¡Ah, señor mío! ¿qué haremos?

And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, `Alas! my lord, how do we do?'

16 E liseo respondió: —No tengas miedo, porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.

And he saith, `Fear not, for more they who with us than they who with them.'

17 Y oró Eliseo, diciendo: «Te ruego, Jehová, que abras sus ojos para que vea.» Jehová abrió entonces los ojos del criado, y éste vio que el monte estaba lleno de gente de a caballo y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo.

And Elisha prayeth, and saith, `Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18 C uando los sirios descendían hacia él, oró Eliseo a Jehová, y dijo: «Te ruego que hieras con ceguera a esta gente.» Y Jehová los hirió con ceguera, conforme a la petición de Eliseo.

And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19 D espués les dijo Eliseo: «No es éste el camino ni es ésta la ciudad; seguidme y yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis.» Y los guió a Samaria.

And Elisha saith unto them, `This not the way, nor this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.

20 C uando llegaron a Samaria, dijo Eliseo: «Jehová, abre los ojos de estos para que vean.» Jehová les abrió los ojos y vieron que se hallaban en medio de Samaria.

And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, `Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!

21 A l verlos el rey de Israel, le preguntó a Eliseo: —¿Los mataré, padre mío?

And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, `Do I smite -- do I smite -- my father?'

22 É l le respondió: —No los mates. ¿Matarías tú a los que tomaste cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Sírveles pan y agua; que coman y beban, y que vuelvan a sus señores.

And he saith, `Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'

23 E ntonces se les preparó una gran comida. Cuando hubieron comido y bebido, los despidió, y ellos volvieron a su señor. Y nunca más vinieron bandas armadas de Siria a la tierra de Israel. Eliseo y el sitio de Samaria

And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.

24 D espués de esto aconteció que Ben-adad, rey de Siria, reunió todo su ejército, subió y sitió a Samaria.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,

25 A consecuencia de aquel sitio, hubo una gran hambruna en Samaria; tan duro era, que la cabeza de un asno se vendía por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta parte de un cab de estiércol de palomas por cinco piezas de plata.

and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.

26 A l pasar un día el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le gritó: —Ayúdanos, rey y señor mío.

And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, `Save, my lord, O king.'

27 E l rey respondió: —Si no te salva Jehová, ¿con qué te puedo salvar yo? ¿Con lo del granero o del lagar?

And he saith, `Jehovah doth not save thee -- whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'

28 Y añadió el rey: —¿Qué tienes? Ella respondió: —Esta mujer me dijo: “Trae acá a tu hijo, nos lo comemos hoy y mañana comeremos al mío.”

And the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;

29 C ocimos, pues, a mi hijo, y nos lo comimos. Al día siguiente yo le dije: “Trae acá a tu hijo para que nos lo comamos.” Pero ella ha escondido a su hijo.

and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'

30 C uando el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, pasó por el muro y el pueblo vio las ropas ásperas que traía ceñidas a su cuerpo.

And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth on his flesh within.

31 Y el rey exclamó: «Traiga Dios sobre mí el peor de los castigos, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Safat queda hoy sobre sus hombros.»

And he saith, `Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add -- if it remain -- the head of Elisha son of Shaphat -- upon him this day.'

32 E liseo estaba sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos. El rey le había enviado un hombre, pero antes que el mensajero llegara, Eliseo dijo a los ancianos: —¿No habéis visto cómo este hijo de homicida envía a cortarme la cabeza? Mirad, pues, cuando llegue el mensajero cerrad la puerta e impedidle entrar. ¿Acaso no se oye tras él el ruido de los pasos de su amo?

And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, `Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'

33 A ún estaba hablando con ellos, cuando el mensajero descendió adonde él estaba y le dijo: —Ciertamente todo este mal viene de Jehová. ¿Qué puedo esperar ya de él?

He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, `Lo, this the evil from Jehovah: what -- do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
