1 ¶ Boast not thyself of tomorrow for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Non ti vantare del domani, poiché non sai quel che un giorno possa produrre.

2 ¶ Let another man praise thee and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

Altri ti lodi, non la tua bocca; un estraneo, non le tue labbra.

3 ¶ A stone is heavy and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

La pietra è grave e la sabbia pesante, ma l’irritazione dello stolto pesa più dell’uno e dell’altra.

4 W rath is cruel, and anger is impetuous, but who is able to stand before envy?

L’ira è crudele e la collera impetuosa; ma chi può resistere alla gelosia?

5 ¶ Open rebuke is better than secret love.

Meglio riprensione aperta che amore nascosto.

6 F aithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Chi ama ferisce, ma rimane fedele; chi odia dà abbondanza di baci.

7 ¶ The full soul loathes a honeycomb, but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

Chi è sazio calpesta il favo di miele, ma per chi ha fame ogni cosa amara è dolce.

8 ¶ As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man that wanders from his place.

Come l’uccello che va peregrinando lontano dal nido, così è l’uomo che va peregrinando lontano da casa.

9 ¶ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, so does the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

L’olio e il profumo rallegrano il cuore; così fa la dolcezza di un amico con i suoi consigli cordiali.

10 D o not forsake thine own friend and thy father’s friend, neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity, for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

Non abbandonare il tuo amico né l’amico di tuo padre, e non andare in casa del tuo fratello nel giorno della tua sventura; una persona a te vicina vale più d’un fratello lontano.

11 ¶ My son, be wise and make my heart glad that I may answer him that reproaches me.

Figlio mio, sii saggio e rallegrami il cuore, così potrò rispondere a chi mi offende.

12 ¶ A prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are hurt by it.

L’uomo accorto vede il male e si mette al riparo, ma gli ingenui proseguono e ne pagano le conseguenze.

13 ¶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger and take a pledge of him that is surety for a strange woman.

Prendigli il vestito poiché ha fatto cauzione per altri; fatti dare dei pegni, poiché s’è reso garante di stranieri.

14 ¶ He that blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

Chi benedice il prossimo ad alta voce, di buon mattino, sarà considerato come se lo maledicesse.

15 ¶ A continual dripping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

Un gocciolare continuo in giorno di gran pioggia e una donna rissosa sono cose che si somigliano.

16 W hosoever hides her hides the wind, because the oil in his right hand cries out.

Chi la vuol trattenere vuole trattenere il vento e stringere l’olio nella sua destra.

17 ¶ Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Il ferro forbisce il ferro; così un uomo ne forbisce un altro.

18 ¶ Whosoever keeps the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof, so he that waits on his master shall be honoured.

Chi ha cura del fico ne mangerà il frutto; e chi veglia sul suo padrone sarà onorato.

19 ¶ As in water face corresponds to face, so the heart of man to man.

Come il viso si riflette nell’acqua, così il cuore dell’uomo si riflette nell’uomo.

20 ¶ Sheol and hell are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

Il soggiorno dei morti e l’abisso sono insaziabili, e insaziabili sono gli occhi degli uomini.

21 ¶ As the fining pot tries the silver and the furnace the gold; so the man is tried by the mouth of whoever praises him.

Il crogiuolo è per l’argento e il fornello per l’oro, e l’uomo è provato dalla bocca di chi lo loda.

22 ¶ Though thou should bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet his foolishness will not depart from him.

Anche se tu pestassi lo stolto in un mortaio, in mezzo al grano con il pestello, la sua follia non lo lascerebbe.

23 ¶ Be thou diligent to know the countenance of thy sheep, and put thy heart into thy herds.

Guarda di conoscere bene lo stato delle tue pecore, abbi gran cura delle tue mandrie;

24 F or riches are not for ever, and does the crown endure to every generation?

perché le ricchezze non durano sempre, e neanche una corona dura di epoca in epoca.

25 T he tender grass shows itself, and the hay appears, and the herbs of the mountains are reaped.

Quando è tolto il fieno, subito rispunta l’erbetta fresca e le erbe dei monti sono raccolte.

26 T he lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field.

Gli agnelli ti danno da vestire, i becchi di che comprarti un campo,

27 A nd thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance of thy maidens.

e il latte delle capre basta a nutrire te, a nutrire la tua famiglia e a far vivere le tue serve.
