1 A nd there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, unto Gerar.

En aquel tiempo hubo hambre en la tierra —además de la primera que hubo en los días de Abraham—, y se fue Isaac a Gerar, adonde estaba Abimelec, rey de los filisteos.

2 A nd Jehovah appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt. Dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of.

Allí se le apareció Jehová, y le dijo: «No desciendas a Egipto; habita en la tierra que yo te diré.

3 S ojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee. For unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father.

Habita como forastero en esta tierra. Yo estaré contigo y te bendeciré, porque a ti y a tu descendencia daré todas estas tierras y confirmaré el juramento que hice a Abraham, tu padre.

4 A nd I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these lands. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

Multiplicaré tu descendencia como las estrellas del cielo y daré a tu descendencia todas estas tierras, y todas las naciones de la tierra serán benditas en tu simiente,

5 B ecause that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

por cuanto oyó Abraham mi voz y guardó mi precepto, mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis leyes.»

6 A nd Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

Habitó, pues, Isaac en Gerar.

7 A nd the men of the place asked him of his wife. And he said, She is my sister. For he feared to say, My wife. Lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah. Because she was fair to look upon.

Y cuando los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer, él respondió: «Es mi hermana», pues tuvo miedo de decir: «Es mi mujer», pensando que tal vez los hombres del lugar lo matarían por causa de Rebeca, pues ella era de hermoso aspecto.

8 A nd it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

Sucedió después de muchos días de estar él allí, que Abimelec, rey de los filisteos, mirando por una ventana vio a Isaac que acariciaba a Rebeca, su mujer.

9 A nd Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife. And how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die because of her.

Entonces llamó Abimelec a Isaac y le dijo: —Ciertamente ella es tu mujer. ¿Por qué, pues, dijiste: “Es mi hermana”? Isaac le respondió: —Porque me dije: “Quizá moriré por causa de ella.”

10 A nd Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? One of the people might easily have lain with thy wife, and thou wouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

Pero Abimelec replicó: —¿Por qué nos has hecho esto? Un poco más y habría dormido alguno del pueblo con tu mujer, y tú habrías traído el pecado sobre nosotros.

11 A nd Abimelech charged all the people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

Entonces Abimelec amenazó a todo el pueblo, diciendo: —El que toque a este hombre o a su mujer, de cierto morirá.

12 A nd Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year a hundredfold. And Jehovah blessed him.

Sembró Isaac en aquella tierra, y cosechó aquel año el ciento por uno; y lo bendijo Jehová.

13 A nd the man waxed great, and grew more and more until he became very great.

Se enriqueció y fue prosperado, y se engrandeció hasta hacerse muy poderoso.

14 A nd he had possessions of flocks, and possessions of herds, and a great household. And the Philistines envied him.

Poseía hato de ovejas, hato de vacas y mucha servidumbre; y los filisteos le tuvieron envidia.

15 N ow all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth.

Todos los pozos que habían abierto los criados de su padre, Abraham, en sus días, los filisteos los habían cegado y llenado de tierra.

16 A nd Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us. For thou art much mightier than we.

Entonces dijo Abimelec a Isaac: —Apártate de nosotros, porque te has hecho mucho más poderoso que nosotros.

17 A nd Isaac departed thence, and encamped in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

Isaac se fue de allí y acampó en el valle de Gerar, y allí habitó.

18 A nd Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father. For the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. And he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

Volvió Isaac a abrir los pozos de agua que habían sido abiertos en los días de Abraham, su padre, y que los filisteos habían cegado después de la muerte de Abraham; y los llamó por los nombres que su padre los había llamado.

19 A nd Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

Pero cuando los siervos de Isaac cavaron en el valle y hallaron allí un pozo de aguas vivas,

20 A nd the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, The water is ours. And he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

los pastores de Gerar riñeron con los pastores de Isaac, diciendo: «El agua es nuestra.» Por eso, al pozo le puso por nombre «Esek», porque se habían peleado por él.

21 A nd they digged another well, and they strove for that also. And he called the name of it Sitnah.

Después abrieron otro pozo y también riñeron por causa de él, y le puso por nombre «Sitna».

22 A nd he removed from thence, and digged another well. And for that they strove not. And he called the name of it Rehoboth. And he said, For now Jehovah hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

Se apartó de allí y abrió otro pozo, y ya no riñeron por él; le puso por nombre Rehobot, y dijo: «Ahora Jehová nos ha prosperado y fructificaremos en la tierra.»

23 A nd he went up from thence to Beer-sheba.

De allí subió a Beerseba.

24 A nd Jehovah appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father. Fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

Aquella noche se le apareció Jehová y le dijo: «Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abraham. No temas, porque yo estoy contigo. Te bendeciré, y multiplicaré tu descendencia por amor de Abraham, mi siervo.»

25 A nd he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of Jehovah, and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants digged a well.

Entonces edificó allí un altar e invocó el nombre de Jehová. Plantó allí su tienda, y abrieron allí un pozo los siervos de Isaac.

26 T hen Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his host.

Abimelec vino desde Gerar adonde él estaba. Y con él vinieron Ahuzat, amigo suyo, y Ficol, capitán de su ejército.

27 A nd Isaac said unto them, Wherefore are ye come unto me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

Isaac les dijo: —¿Por qué venís a mí, si me habéis aborrecido y me habéis echado de entre vosotros?

28 A nd they said, We saw plainly that Jehovah was with thee. And we said, Let there now be an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee,

Ellos respondieron: —Hemos visto que Jehová está contigo, y dijimos: “Haya ahora juramento entre nosotros.” Haremos contigo este pacto:

29 t hat thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace. Thou art now the blessed of Jehovah.

Tú no nos harás ningún mal, pues nosotros no te hemos tocado; solamente te hemos hecho bien y te dejamos partir en paz. Tú eres ahora bendito de Jehová.

30 A nd he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

Entonces él les ofreció un banquete, y comieron y bebieron.

31 A nd they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another. And Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

Se levantaron de madrugada y se hicieron mutuo juramento. Luego Isaac los despidió, y ellos se despidieron de él en paz.

32 A nd it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.

Aquel mismo día sucedió que vinieron los criados de Isaac y le dieron la noticia del pozo que habían abierto, y le dijeron: «Hemos hallado agua.»

33 A nd he called it Shibah. Therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day.

Isaac lo llamó «Seba»; por esta causa el nombre de aquella ciudad es Beerseba hasta este día.

34 A nd when Esau was forty years old he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

Cuando Esaú tenía cuarenta años, tomó por mujer a Judit, hija de Beeri, el heteo, y a Basemat, hija de Elón, el heteo;

35 A nd they were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

y fueron amargura de espíritu para Isaac y para Rebeca.
