1 A nd Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way; and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple.
Jesus departed from the temple area and was going on His way when His disciples came up to Him to call His attention to the buildings of the temple and point them out to Him.
2 B ut he answered and said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
But He answered them, Do you see all these? Truly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.
3 A nd as he sat on the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
While He was seated on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately and said, Tell us, when will this take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end (the completion, the consummation) of the age?
4 A nd Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray.
Jesus answered them, Be careful that no one misleads you.
5 F or many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.
For many will come in (on the strength of) My name '> appropriating the name which belongs to Me], saying, I am the Christ (the Messiah), and they will lead many astray.
6 A nd ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet.
And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not frightened or troubled, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.
7 F or nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places.
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in place after place;
8 B ut all these things are the beginning of travail.
All this is but the beginning of the birth pangs '> intolerable anguish].
9 T hen shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name's sake.
Then they will hand you over to suffer affliction and tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.
10 A nd then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.
And then many will be offended and repelled and will begin to distrust and desert and will stumble and fall away and betray one another and pursue one another with hatred.
11 A nd many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray.
And many false prophets will rise up and deceive and lead many into error.
12 A nd because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.
And the love of the great body of people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness and iniquity,
13 B ut he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.
But he who endures to the end will be saved.
14 A nd this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.
And this good news of the kingdom (the Gospel) will be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then will come the end.
15 W hen therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that readeth understand),
So when you see the appalling sacrilege, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place—let the reader take notice and ponder and consider and heed —
16 t hen let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains:
Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;
17 l et him that is on the housetop not go down to take out things that are in his house:
Let him who is on the housetop not come down and go into the house to take anything;
18 a nd let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak.
And let him who is in the field not turn back to get his overcoat.
19 B ut woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!
And alas for the women who are pregnant and for those who have nursing babies in those days!
20 A nd pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on a sabbath:
Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.
21 f or then shall be great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever shall be.
For then there will be great tribulation (affliction, distress, and oppression) such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now—no, and never will be.
22 A nd except those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would endure and survive, but for the sake of the elect (God’s chosen ones) those days will be shortened.
23 T hen if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ, or, Here; believe it not.
If anyone says to you then, Behold, here is the Christ (the Messiah)! or, There He is!—do not believe it.
24 F or there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders so as to deceive and lead astray, if possible, even the elect (God’s chosen ones).
25 B ehold, I have told you beforehand.
See, I have warned you beforehand.
26 I f therefore they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the wilderness; go not forth: Behold, he is in the inner chambers; believe it not.
So if they say to you, Behold, He is in the wilderness (desert)—do not go out there; if they tell you, Behold, He is in the secret places or inner rooms—do not believe it.
27 F or as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.
For just as the lightning flashes from the east and shines and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
28 W heresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
Wherever there is a fallen body (a corpse), there the vultures (or eagles) will flock together.
29 B ut immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 a nd then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and beat their breasts and lament in anguish, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 A nd he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect (His chosen ones) from the four winds, from one end of the universe to the other.
32 N ow from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh;
From the fig tree learn this lesson: as soon as its young shoots become soft and tender and it puts out its leaves, you know of a surety that summer is near.
33 e ven so ye also, when ye see all these things, know ye that he is nigh, even at the doors.
So also when you see these signs, all taken together, coming to pass, you may know of a surety that He is near, at the very doors.
34 V erily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished.
Truly I tell you, this generation ( the whole multitude of people living at the same time, in a definite, given period) will not pass away till all these things taken together take place.
35 H eaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Sky and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
36 B ut of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.
But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
37 A nd as were the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man.
As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
38 F or as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
For just as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah went into the ark,
39 a nd they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.
And they did not know or understand until the flood came and swept them all away—so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
40 T hen shall two man be in the field; one is taken, and one is left:
At that time two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.
41 t wo women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left.
Two women will be grinding at the hand mill; one will be taken and one will be left.
42 W atch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh.
Watch therefore '> give strict attention, be cautious and active], for you do not know in what kind of a day '> whether a near or remote one] your Lord is coming.
43 B ut know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through.
But understand this: had the householder known in what '> night or a morning] watch the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have allowed his house to be undermined and broken into.
44 T herefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.
You also must be ready therefore, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not expect Him.
45 W ho then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give them their food in due season?
Who then is the faithful, thoughtful, and wise servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household to give to the others the food and supplies at the proper time?
46 B lessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) is that servant whom, when his master comes, he will find so doing.
47 V erily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.
I solemnly declare to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
48 B ut if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth;
But if that servant is wicked and says to himself, My master is delayed and is going to be gone a long time,
49 a nd shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken;
And begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with the drunken,
50 t he lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not,
The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour of which he is not aware,
51 a nd shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
And will punish him '> cut him up by scourging] and put him with the pretenders (hypocrites); there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
