1 D espués de que Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, llevó cautivo a su país a Jeconías hijo de Joacín, rey de Judá, junto con los príncipes de Judá y los artesanos y herreros de Jerusalén, el Señor me mostró dos cestas de higos, las cuales estaban puestas delante del templo del Señor.

The Lord showed me, and there were two baskets of figs set before the temple of the Lord, after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah with the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.

2 E n una de las cestas había uno higos tan buenos que parecían brevas; en la otra cesta había unos higos tan malos que no se podían comer.

One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

3 E l Señor me dijo: «¿Qué es lo que ves, Jeremías?» Yo le contesté: «Veo unos higos muy buenos, y otros muy malos, tan malos que no se pueden comer.»

Then the Lord said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “Figs, the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad.”

4 L a palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo:

Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

5 « Yo, el Señor y Dios de Israel, declaro que los habitantes de Judá que eché de este lugar son para mí como estos higos buenos. Para su bien los llevé a la tierra de los caldeos.

“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge those who are carried away captive from Judah, whom I have sent out of this place for their own good, into the land of the Chaldeans.

6 P ara su bien he puesto mis ojos en ellos, y los haré volver a esta tierra. Los edificaré, y no los destruiré; los plantaré y no los arrancaré.

For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land; I will build them and not pull them down, and I will plant them and not pluck them up.

7 P ondré en ellos el deseo de conocerme, y de reconocer que yo soy el Señor. Y si en verdad se vuelven a mí de todo corazón, entonces ellos serán mi pueblo y yo seré su Dios.

Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.

8 » Con Sedequías, rey de Judá, haré lo que se hace con los higos malos, que de tan malos no se pueden comer. Y lo mismo haré con sus príncipes y con los que se quedaron en Jerusalén y en esta tierra, y con los que ahora viven en Egipto. Yo, el Señor, lo he dicho.

‘And as the bad figs which cannot be eaten, they are so bad’—surely thus says the Lord —‘so will I give up Zedekiah the king of Judah, his princes, the residue of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt.

9 P ara su mal, los expondré al escarnio de todos los reinos de la tierra. Por todos los lugares adonde yo los arroje, serán motivo proverbial de burlas; la gente usará su nombre como maldición.

I will deliver them to trouble into all the kingdoms of the earth, for their harm, to be a reproach and a byword, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I shall drive them.

10 H aré venir contra ellos guerras, hambre y peste, hasta que sean exterminados de la tierra que les di a ellos y a sus padres.»

And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence among them, till they are consumed from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’”
