The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, the oracle. The man declares to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:

2 C erto, io sono più ignorante di ogni altro e non ho l’intelligenza di un uomo.

Surely I am more stupid than any man, And I do not have the understanding of a man.

3 N on ho imparato la saggezza e non ho la conoscenza del Santo.

Neither have I learned wisdom, Nor do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.

4 C hi è salito in cielo e ne è disceso? Chi ha raccolto il vento nel suo pugno? Chi ha racchiuso le acque nella sua veste? Chi ha stabilito tutti i confini della terra? Qual è il suo nome e il nome di suo figlio? Lo sai tu?

Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son’s name? Surely you know!

5 O gni parola di Dio è affinata con il fuoco. Egli è uno scudo per chi confida in lui.

Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

6 N on aggiungere nulla alle sue parole, perché egli non ti rimproveri e tu sia trovato bugiardo.

Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.

7 I o ti ho chiesto due cose; non me le rifiutare, prima che io muoia:

Two things I asked of You, Do not refuse me before I die:

8 a llontana da me vanità e parola bugiarda; non darmi né povertà né ricchezze, cibami del pane che mi è necessario,

Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion,

9 p erché io, una volta sazio, non ti rinneghi e dica: «Chi è il Signore ?» oppure, diventato povero, non rubi e profani il nome del mio Dio.

That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord ?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.

10 N on calunniare il servo presso il suo padrone, perché egli non ti maledica e tu non abbia a subirne la pena.

Do not slander a slave to his master, Or he will curse you and you will be found guilty.

11 C ’è una razza di gente che maledice suo padre e non benedice sua madre.

There is a kind of man who curses his father And does not bless his mother.

12 C ’è una razza di gente che si crede pura e non è lavata della sua sozzura.

There is a kind who is pure in his own eyes, Yet is not washed from his filthiness.

13 C ’è una razza di gente che ha gli occhi molto alteri e le palpebre superbe.

There is a kind—oh how lofty are his eyes! And his eyelids are raised in arrogance.

14 C ’è una razza di gente i cui denti sono spade e i mascellari sono coltelli, per divorare del tutto i miseri sulla terra e i bisognosi in mezzo agli uomini.

There is a kind of man whose teeth are like swords And his jaw teeth like knives, To devour the afflicted from the earth And the needy from among men.

15 L a sanguisuga ha due figlie che dicono: «Dammi, dammi!» Ci sono tre cose che non si saziano mai, anzi quattro, che non dicono mai: «Basta!»

The leech has two daughters, “Give,” “Give.” There are three things that will not be satisfied, Four that will not say, “Enough”:

16 I l soggiorno dei morti, il grembo sterile, la terra che non si sazia d’acqua e il fuoco che non dice mai: «Basta!»

Sheol, and the barren womb, Earth that is never satisfied with water, And fire that never says, “Enough.”

17 L ’occhio di chi si beffa del padre e non si degna di ubbidire alla madre lo caveranno i corvi del torrente, lo divoreranno gli aquilotti.

The eye that mocks a father And scorns a mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it.

18 C i sono tre cose per me troppo meravigliose; anzi quattro, che io non capisco:

There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Four which I do not understand:

19 l a traccia dell’aquila nell’aria, la traccia del serpente sulla roccia, la traccia della nave in mezzo al mare, la traccia dell’uomo nella giovane.

The way of an eagle in the sky, The way of a serpent on a rock, The way of a ship in the middle of the sea, And the way of a man with a maid.

20 T ale è la condotta della donna adultera: essa mangia, si pulisce la bocca e dice: «Non ho fatto nulla di male!»

This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, And says, “I have done no wrong.”

21 P er tre cose la terra trema, anzi per quattro, che non può sopportare:

Under three things the earth quakes, And under four, it cannot bear up:

22 p er un servo quando diventa re, per un uomo da nulla quando ha pane a sazietà,

Under a slave when he becomes king, And a fool when he is satisfied with food,

23 p er una donna, mai chiesta, quando giunge a maritarsi e per una serva quando diventa erede della padrona.

Under an unloved woman when she gets a husband, And a maidservant when she supplants her mistress.

24 C i sono quattro animali fra i più piccoli della terra, e tuttavia pieni di saggezza:

Four things are small on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise:

25 l e formiche, popolo senza forza, che si preparano il cibo durante l’estate;

The ants are not a strong people, But they prepare their food in the summer;

26 g li iraci, popolo non potente, che fissano la loro abitazione nelle rocce;

The shephanim are not mighty people, Yet they make their houses in the rocks;

27 l e locuste, che non hanno re e procedono tutte divise per schiere;

The locusts have no king, Yet all of them go out in ranks;

28 l a lucertola, che puoi prendere con le mani, eppure si trova nei palazzi dei re.

The lizard you may grasp with the hands, Yet it is in kings’ palaces.

29 Q ueste tre creature hanno una bella andatura, anche queste quattro hanno un passo magnifico:

There are three things which are stately in their march, Even four which are stately when they walk:

30 i l leone, che è il più forte degli animali e non indietreggia davanti a nessuno;

The lion which is mighty among beasts And does not retreat before any,

31 i l cavallo dai fianchi serrati, il capro e il re alla testa dei suoi eserciti.

The strutting rooster, the male goat also, And a king when his army is with him.

32 S e hai agito da folle cercando di innalzarti, o se hai pensato del male, mettiti la mano sulla bocca;

If you have been foolish in exalting yourself Or if you have plotted evil, put your hand on your mouth.

33 p erché, come chi agita la panna ne fa uscire il burro, chi sbatte il naso ne fa uscire il sangue, così chi spreme l’ira ne fa uscire contese.

For the churning of milk produces butter, And pressing the nose brings forth blood; So the churning of anger produces strife.
