1 D omnul i-a zis lui Moise:

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

2 „ Trimite oameni să iscodească ţara Canaanului pe care o dau israeliţilor. Din fiecare seminţie a părinţilor lor să trimiţi câte un om; toţi să fie dintre conducătorii lor.“

Send thou men, that they may search out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel. Ye shall send a man of every tribe of his fathers, each a prince among them.

3 M oise i-a trimis din pustia Paran, după porunca Domnului; toţi aceştia erau conducători ai israeliţilor.

And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran: according to the commandment of Jehovah, all of them heads of the children of Israel.

4 A cestea sunt numele lor: din seminţia lui Ruben: Şamua, fiul lui Zachur;

And these are their names: for the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;

5 d in seminţia lui Simeon: Şafat, fiul lui Hori;

for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;

6 d in seminţia lui Iuda: Caleb, fiul lui Iefune;

for the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;

7 d in seminţia lui Isahar: Igal, fiul lui Iosif;

for the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;

8 d in seminţia lui Efraim: Osea, fiul lui Nun;

for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;

9 d in seminţia lui Beniamin: Palti, fiul lui Rafu;

for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;

10 d in seminţia lui Zabulon: Gadiel, fiul lui Sodi;

for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;

11 d in seminţia lui Iosif ( mai exact din seminţia lui Manase): Gadi, fiul lui Susi;

for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;

12 d in seminţia lui Dan: Amiel, fiul lui Ghemali;

for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;

13 d in seminţia lui Aşer: Setur, fiul lui Mihael;

for the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;

14 d in seminţia lui Neftali: Nahbi, fiul lui Vofsi;

for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;

15 d in seminţia lui Gad: Gheuel, fiul lui Machi.

for the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 A cestea sunt numele oamenilor pe care i-a trimis Moise să iscodească ţara. Moise a schimbat numele lui Osea, fiul lui Nun, în Iosua.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to search out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Jehoshua.

17 M oise i-a trimis să iscodescă ţara Canaan, zicându-le: „Mergeţi de aici spre Neghev, urcaţi muntele

And Moses sent them to search out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way by the south and go up into the hill-country,

18 ş i vedeţi cum este ţara: dacă poporul care locuieşte acolo este puternic sau slab, dacă sunt mulţi sau puţini,

and ye shall see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, few or many;

19 d acă ţara în care locuiesc este bună sau rea, dacă oraşele în care locuiesc sunt ca nişte tabere sau sunt fortificate,

and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

20 d acă ţara este bogată sau săracă şi dacă sunt copaci în ea sau nu. Fiţi curajoşi şi aduceţi câteva din roadele ţării.“ Era pe vremea când începeau să se coacă strugurii.

and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there are trees in it, or not. And take courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first grapes.

21 Ş i astfel ei s-au dus şi au iscodit ţara, începând de la pustia Ţin până la Rehob, lângă Lebo-Hamat.

And they went up, and searched out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, where one comes towards Hamath.

22 A u urcat spre Neghev şi au ajuns la Hebron; acolo erau anachiţii Ahiman, Şeşai şi Talmai. (Hebronul a fost zidit cu şapte ani înaintea cetăţii Ţoan din Egipt).

And they went up by the south, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. Now Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

23 A poi au ajuns în valea Eşcol; acolo au tăiat o ramură de viţă cu un singur ciorchine de struguri, după care doi dintre ei l-au dus pe un drug. De asemenea, au luat şi nişte rodii şi smochine.

And they came as far as the valley of Eshcol, and cut down thence a branch with one bunch of grapes, and they bore it between two upon a pole; and of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24 L ocul acela a fost numit valea Eşcol, din cauza ciorchinelui pe care israeliţii l-au tăiat de acolo. Raportul iscoadelor

That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the grapes which the children of Israel had cut down there.

25 S -au întors de la iscodirea ţării după patruzeci de zile.

And they returned from searching out the land after forty days.

26 A u venit înaintea lui Moise, a lui Aaron şi a întregii adunări a israeliţilor în pustia Paran, la Kadeş; le-au adus veşti, lor şi întregii adunări, şi le-au arătat roadele ţării.

And they came, and went to Moses and to Aaron, and to the whole assembly of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to the whole assembly; and shewed them the fruit of the land.

27 E i i-au zis lui Moise: „Am ajuns în ţara în care ne-ai trimis şi, într-adevăr, acolo curge lapte şi miere; acesta este rodul ei.

And they told him, and said, We came to the land to which thou didst send us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28 Î nsă locuitorii ţării sunt puternici, iar cetăţile lor sunt fortificate şi mari; mai mult, i-am văzut acolo şi pe anachiţi.

Only, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, very great; moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 A malekiţii locuiesc în ţinutul Neghev; hitiţii, iebusiţii şi amoriţii locuiesc în munţi, iar canaaniţii locuiesc lângă mare şi de-a lungul Iordanului.“

Amalek dwells in the land of the south; and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the side of the Jordan.

30 A tunci Caleb a liniştit poporul înaintea lui Moise şi a zis: – Haideţi să mergem şi să o ocupăm, căci sigur vom putea s-o cucerim!

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up boldly and possess it, for we are well able to do it.

31 D ar oamenii care au mers cu el au zis: – Nu putem să înaintăm împotriva acestui popor pentru că este mai puternic decât noi.

But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.

32 A stfel ei au adus israeliţilor un raport nefavorabil despre ţara pe care au iscodit-o, zicând: „Ţara pe care am străbătut-o ca s-o iscodim este o ţară care îşi mănâncă locuitorii şi toţi oamenii pe care i-am văzut în ea sunt înalţi.

And they brought to the children of Israel an evil report of the land which they had searched out, saying, The land, which we have passed through to search it out, is a land that eateth up its inhabitants; and all the people that we have seen in it are men of great stature;

33 A colo am văzut uriaşi (anachiţii provin din uriaşi); când ne uitam la ei, parcă eram nişte lăcuste şi aşa ne considerau şi ei.“

and there have we seen giants—the sons of Anak are of the giants—and we were in our sight as grasshoppers, and so we were also in their sight.
